“너희는 주님의 길을 마련하여라. 그분의 길을 곧게 내어라.…”—루카 복음서 3:4

 

How would you like to have a Christmas just like the first one in Bethlehem? Most Christians would have to say they don't want anything like the first Christmas. Who wants Bethlehem poverty, the manger, and the rejection at the inn? Who wants Christ's Christmas of love, sacrifice, and self-denial instead of the fake Christmas of self, comfort, and pleasure-seeking?

베들레헴의 첫 성탄과 꼭 같은 성탄을 지내는 것을 여러분은 어떻게 생각하시겠습니까? 그리스도인들 대부분은 첫 성탄과 비슷한 그 어느 것도 원하지 않는다고 할 것입니다. 베들레헴에서의 빈곤, 그 여물통, 여관에서의 문전박대를 누가 원하겠으며, 자기만족과 안락함과 기쁨을 찾는 변질된 성탄을 바라지, 누가 사랑과 희생과 자기 비움의 그리스도의 크리스마스를 원하겠습니까?

 

Of course, most of us modern Christians think we can have both, by having a worldly Christmas with a few spiritual touches. However, the Lord says; "No man can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other or be attentive to one and despise the other" (Mt 6:24).

물론 대부분의 우리 현대 그리스도인들은 약간의 영적 감흥이 가미된 세속적인 크리스마스를 지냄으로써 두 가지를 다 취할 수 있다고 생각하지만, 주님께서는 “아무도 두 주인을 섬길 수 없다. 한쪽은 미워하고 다른 쪽은 사랑하며, 한쪽은 떠받들고 다른 쪽은 업신여기게 된다” (마태 6:24)고 말씀하십니다.

 

"O you unfaithful ones, are you not aware that love of the world is enmity to God?" (Jas 4:4) "Have no love for the world, nor the things that the world affords. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love has no place in him, for nothing that the world affords comes from the Father. Carnal allurements, enticements for the eye, the life of empty show — all these are from the world" (1 Jn 2:15-16).

“절개 없는 자들이여, 세상과 우애를 쌓는 것이 하느님과 적의를 쌓는 것임을 모릅니까?” (야고 4:4) “여러분은 세상도 또 세상 안에 있는 것들도 사랑하지 마십시오. 누가 세상을 사랑하면, 그 사람 안에는 아버지 사랑이 없습니다. 세상에 있는 모든 것, 곧 육의 욕망과 눈의 욕망과 살림살이에 대한 자만은 아버지에게서 온 것이 아니라 세상에서 온 것입니다” (1요한 2:15-16).

 

To have a Bethlehem-Christmas, we need a baptism of repentance (Lk 3:3), John the Baptist instead of Santa Claus, Confession instead of confusion, and fasting instead of feasting.

베들레헴 성탄을 지내려거든, 우리는 회개의 세례를 해야 합니다 (루카 3:3). 산타 클로스 대신세례자 요한이, 혼란이 아닌 참회가 필요하며, 잔치를 열기보다는 단식을 해야 합니다.

attentive  ① 주의 깊은, 세심한(to). ② 경청하는(to). ③ 은근[정중]한, 마음 쓰는, 상냥한(to).

despise  ① 경멸하다, 멸시하다, 얕보다. ② 싫어[혐오]하다.

afford ① a) ┅의 여유가 있다, ┅을 살[지불할, 소유할] 돈이 있다.  ┅을 참을 여유가 있다.

② 주다, 제공하다, 산출하다, 낳다.

carnal  ① 육체의(fleshly); 육감적인(sensual), 육욕적인. ② 세속적인(worldly); 물욕의.

allurement 매력; 유혹(물); 매혹

enticement 유혹, 유인; 유혹물, 마음을 끄는 것, 미끼(allurement); 매력.

 confusion  ① 혼동(with; between). ② 혼란(상태), 분규; 착잡. ③ 당황, 얼떨떨함.

 feasting  ① 축연을 베풀다; 축연에 참석하다. ② 대접을 받다; 진수 성찬을 먹다. ③ 마음껏 즐기다(on).
