Gospel: Mark 12:38-44

In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation." He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood."

마르코 복음 12,38-44

그때에 38 예수님께서 군중을 가르치시면서 이렇게 이르셨다. “율법 학자들을 조심하여라. 그들은 긴 겉옷을 입고 나다니며 장터에서 인사 받기를 즐기고, 39 회당에서는 높은 자리를, 잔치 때에는 윗자리를 즐긴다. 40 그들은 과부들의 가산을 등쳐 먹으면서 남에게 보이려고 기도는 길게 한다. 이러한 자들은 더 엄중히 단죄를 받을 것이다.” 41 예수님께서 헌금함 맞은쪽에 앉으시어, 사람들이 헌금함에 돈을 넣는 모습을 보고 계셨다. 많은 부자들이 큰 돈을 넣었다. 42 그런데 가난한 과부 한 사람이 와서 렙톤 두 닢을 넣었다. 그것은 콰드란스 한 닢인 셈이다. 43 예수님께서 제자들을 가까이 불러 이르셨다. “내가 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 저 가난한 과부가 헌금함에 돈을 넣은 다른 모든 사람보다 더 많이 넣었다. 44 저들은 모두 풍족한 데에서 얼마씩 넣었지만, 저 과부는 궁핍한 가운데에서 가진 것을, 곧 생활비를 모두 다 넣었기 때문이다.”

Commentary

38-40. Our Lord reproves disordered desire for human honours: “We should notice that salutations in the marketplace are not forbidden, nor people taking the best seats if that befits their position; rather, the faithful are warned to avoid, as they would evil men, those who set too much store by such honours” (St Bede, In Marci Evangelium expositio, in loc.). 해설

38-40. 우리 주님께서는 인간적 명예에 대한 잘못된 욕망을 나무라신다: “장터에서 서로 인사하는 것을 금하는 것이 아니고, 앉을만한 사람이 좋은 자리에 앉는 것을 금하는 것이 아닙니다; 주님께서는 믿는 이들에게 그런 명예를 지나치게 중하게 여기는 사람들을 피하라고 말씀하십니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 사악한 사람이기 때문입니다” (St Bede, In Marci Evangelium expositio, in loc.). See also the notes on Mt 23:2-3, 5, 11 and 14.

Mark 23:5. “Phylacteries”: belts or bands carrying quotations from Holy Scripture which the Jews used to wear fastened to their arms or foreheads. To mark themselves out as more religiously observant than others, the Pharisees used to wear broader phylacteries. The fringes were light‐blue stripes on the hems of cloaks; the Pharisees ostentatiously wore broader fringes.

마르코 23,5. “성구함(聖句函). 구약 성서의 구절을 기록한 양피지; 또한 그것을 넣은 작은 가죽 상자로서 몸에 지님”: 유다인들이 팔이나 이마에 달고 다니는 성서의 구절을 기록한 양피지 또는 그것을 넣은 작은 상자이다. 다른 사람보다 더 계명을 잘 지키는 사람임을 과시하기 위하여, 바리사이들은 넓은 성구함을 달고 다녔다. 외투의 가장자리는 엷은 청색의 수술로 장식되었는데, 바리사이들은 그 수술도 화려하게 넓은 것으로 입고 다녔다.

Mark 23:11. The Pharisees were greedy for honour and recognition: our Lord insists that every form of authority, particularly in the context of religion, should be exercised as a form of service of others; it must not be used to indulge personal vanity or greed. “He who is greatest among you shall be your servant”.

마르코 23,11. 바리사이들은 명예와 인정에 대해 탐욕스러웠다: 우리 주님께서는 권위는, 특히 종교 안에서의 권위는, 다른 사람에 대한 봉사의 형태로 나타나야 한다고 말씀하신다; 권위는 개인적인 허영이나 탐욕을 채우는데 쓰여서는 안 된다. “너희 중에 가장 높은 사람은 너희를 섬기는 사람이다”.

41-44. Our Lord uses this little event to reach us the importance of things which apparently are insignificant. He puts it somewhat paradoxically; the poor widow has contributed more than all the rich. In God’s sight the value of such an action lies more in upright intention and generosity of spirit than in the quantity one gives. “Didn’t you see the light in Jesus’ eyes as the poor widow left her little alms in the temple? Give him what you can: the merit is not in whether it is big or small, but in the intention with which you give it” (B1. J. Escriva, The Way, 829).

41-44. 우리 주님께서는 이 작은 사건을 이용하시어, 얼핏 중요하게 보이지 않는 것의 중요성을 일깨워 주신다. 그분은 좀 역설적으로 말씀하신다; 저 가난한 과부가 헌금함에 돈을 넣은 다른 모든 사람보다 더 많이 넣었다. 주님께는 올바른 의도와 자비로운 영혼이 돈의 과다보다 훨씬 중요하다. “그 가난한 과부가 헌금함에 적은 돈을 낼 때 예수님의 눈이 빛나는 것을 보았습니까? 그분께 여러분이 할 수 있는 것을 드리십시오: 공덕(功德)은 액수의 과다에 있지 않고, 봉헌할 때의 마음 가짐에 있습니다” (B1. J. Escriva, The Way, 829).

By the same token, our actions are pleasing to God even if they are not as perfect as we would like. St Francis de Sales comments: “Now as among the treasures of the temple, the poor widow’s mite was much esteemed, so the least little good works, even though performed somewhat coldly and not according to the whole extent of the charity which is in us, are agreeable to God, and esteemed by him; so that though of themselves they cannot cause any increase in the existing love [..] yet divine providence, counting on them and, out of his goodness, valuing them, forthwith rewards them with increase of charity for the present, and assigns to them a greater heavenly glory for the future” (Treatise on the Love of God, book 3, chap. 2).

1 Kings 17:10-16

In those days, Elijah the prophet went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the entrance of the city, a widow was gathering sticks there; he called out to her, "Please bring me a small cupful of water to drink." She left to get it, and he called out after her, "Please bring along a bit of bread." She answered, "As the LORD, your God, lives, I have nothing baked; there is only a handful of flour in my jar and a little oil in my jug. Just now I was collecting a couple of sticks, to go in and prepare something for myself and my son; when we have eaten it, we shall die." Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid. Go and do as you propose. But first make me a little cake and bring it to me. Then you can prepare something for yourself and your son. For the LORD, the God of Israel, says, 'The jar of flour shall not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, until the day when the LORD sends rain upon the earth.'" She left and did as Elijah had said. She was able to eat for a year, and he and her son as well; the jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, as the LORD had foretold through Elijah.

그 무렵 [예언자] 10 엘리야는 일어나 사렙타로 갔다. 그가 성읍에 들어서는데 마침 한 과부가 땔감을 줍고 있었다. 엘리야가 그 여자를 부르고는, “마실 물 한 그릇 좀 떠다 주시오.” 하고 청하였다. 11 그 여자가 물을 뜨러 가는데 엘리야가 다시 불러서 말하였다. “빵도 한 조각 들고 오면 좋겠소.” 12 여자가 대답하였다. “주 어르신의 하느님께서 살아 계시는 한, 구운 빵이라고는 한 조각도 없습니다. 다만 단지에 밀가루 한 줌과 병에 기름이 조금 있을 뿐입니다. 저는 지금 땔감을 두어 개 주워다가 음식을 만들어, 제 아들과 함께 그것이나 먹고 죽을 작정입니다.”13 엘리야가 과부에게 말하였다. “두려워하지 말고 가서 당신 말대로 음식을 만드시오. 그러나 먼저 나를 위해 작은 빵 과자 하나를 만들어 내오고, 그런 다음 당신과 당신 아들을 위하여 음식을 만드시오. 14 주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 이렇게 말씀하셨소. ‘이 주님이 땅에 비를 다시 내리는 날까지, 밀가루 단지는 비지 않고 기름병은 마르지 않을 것이다.’” 15 그러자 그 여인은 가서 엘리야의 말대로 하였다. 과연 그 여자와 엘리야와 그 여자의 집안은 오랫동안 먹을 것이 있었다. 16 주님께서 엘리야를 통하여 하신 말씀대로, 단지에는 밀가루가 떨어지지 않고 병에는 기름이 마르지 않았다.

Second Reading
Hebrews 9:24-28

Christ did not enter into a sanctuary made by hands, a copy of the true one, but heaven itself, that he might now appear before God on our behalf. Not that he might offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters each year into the sanctuary with blood that is not his own; if that were so, he would have had to suffer repeatedly from the foundation of the world. But now once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin by his sacrifice. Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment, so also Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.

히브리서 9,24-28

24 그리스도께서는, 참성소의 모조품에 지나지 않는 곳에, 곧 사람 손으로 만든 성소에 들어가지 않으셨습니다. 이제 우리를 위하여 하느님 앞에 나타나시려고 바로 하늘에 들어가신 것입니다. 25 대사제가 해마다 다른 생물의 피를 가지고 성소에 들어가듯이, 당신 자신을 여러 번 바치시려고 들어가신 것이 아닙니다. 26 만일 그렇다면 세상 창조 때부터 여러 번 고난을 받으셔야 했을 것입니다. 그러나 이제 그분께서는 마지막 시대에 당신 자신을 제물로 바쳐 죄를 없애시려고 단 한 번 나타나셨습니다. 27 사람은 단 한 번 죽기 마련이고 그 뒤에 심판이 이어지듯이, 28 그리스도께서도 많은 사람의 죄를 짊어지시려고 단 한 번 당신 자신을 바치셨습니다. 그리고 당신을 고대하는 이들을 구원하시려고 죄와는 상관없이 두 번째로 나타나실 것입니다.
