POOR ME

가난한 우리들

 “네가 잔치를 베풀 때에는 오히려 가난한 이들, 장애인들, 다리 저는 이들, 눈먼 이들을 초대하여라.” — 루카 14:13

 

According to Jesus, feeding the poor is a personal responsibility. The poor must be our personal friends. We should try to get to know them by visiting them, while encouraging them to call or drop in on us. The government and Church are not to take our place in feeding the poor but to supplement our individual efforts.

예수님의 말씀에 따르면 우리는 가난한 사람들을 먹여 살려야 할 개인적인 책무를 안고 있습니다. 우리는 가난한 사람들과 개인적으로 친구가 되어야 합니다. 그들을 방문하여 친해지려고 노력하고 그들이 우리에게 전화하고 집에도 올 수 있게 북돋워 줘야 합니다. 정부와 교회가 해야 할 일은 가난한 이들을 부양함으로써 우리가 해야 할 일을 대신 하는 것이 아니라 우리들 각자의 개인적인 노력을 보충하는 것입니다.

 

We should open our homes to the poor and serve them with our own hands. We can supplement this by writing a check to a social service agency, but a check can never take the place of hands-on, in-house service to the poor.

우리는 가난한 이들에게 대문을 열고 우리 손으로 그들을 대접해야 합니다. 사회 봉사 기관에 돈을 보내는 것이 이러한 노력에 더해질 수 있지만 가난한 이들에게 우리 손으로, 집 안에서 행하는 섬김을 돈으로 대신할 수는 없습니다.

 

Jesus described His ministry as preaching good news to the poor (Lk 4:18). He said that on Judgment Day our personal service to the poor would make an eternal difference (Mt 25:34ff). Jesus freely chose to become poor (2 Cor 8:9). In our personal ministry, we must always make it a priority to "be mindful of the poor" (Gal 2:10) and have "a preferential love for the poor" (Catechism, 1586). We cannot love Jesus without loving the poor. They are God's presence in our midst, a challenge with eternal consequences, and a precious opportunity to love Jesus. Love the poor.

예수님께서는 가난한 이들에게 기쁜 소식을 전하는 것이 당신의 사명이라고 하셨습니다.(루카 4:18)  또한 가난한 이들에게 행한 것이 심판 날에 영원한 차이를 낳게 될 것이라고 하셨습니다. (마태 25:34 이하 참조) 예수님께서는 스스로 가난해지기를 택하셨습니다.(2코린 8:9) 우리들 각자의 사명을 통해 우리는 “가난한 이들을 기억하고” (갈라 2:10) “가난한 이들에 대한 각별한 사랑” (카톨릭교회교리서, 1586) 을 가져야 합니다. 가난한 이들을 사랑하지 않고 예수님을 사랑할 수 없습니다. 그들은 우리 한가운데에 있는 하느님의 현존이고 영원한 결과를 낳게 될 도전이며 예수님을 사랑할 소중한 기회입니다. 가난한 이들을 사랑합시다.
