Gospel (Mark 12:28-34)
One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, "Which is the first of all the commandments?" Jesus replied, "The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these." The scribe said to him, "Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, 'He is One and there is no other than he.' And 'to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices." And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

그때에 28 율법 학자 한 사람이 예수님께 다가와, “모든 계명 가운데에서 첫째가는 계명은 무엇입니까?” 하고 물었다. 29 예수님께서 대답하셨다. “첫째는 이것이다. ‘이스라엘아, 들어라. 주 우리 하느님은 한 분이신 주님이시다. 30 그러므로 너는 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 정신을 다하고 힘을 다하여 주 너의 하느님을 사랑해야 한다.’31 둘째는 이것이다. ‘네 이웃을 너 자신처럼 사랑해야 한다.’ 이보다 더 큰 계명은 없다.” 32 그러자 율법 학자가 예수님께 말하였다. “훌륭하십니다, 스승님. ‘그분은 한 분뿐이시고 그 밖에 다른 이가 없다.’ 하시니, 과연 옳은 말씀이십니다. 33 또 ‘마음을 다하고 생각을 다하고 힘을 다하여 그분을 사랑하는 것’과 ‘이웃을 자기 자신처럼 사랑하는 것’이 모든 번제물과 희생 제물보다 낫습니다.”34 예수님께서는 그가 슬기롭게 대답하는 것을 보시고 그에게, “너는 하느님의 나라에서 멀리 있지 않다.” 하고 이르셨다. 그 뒤에는 어느 누구도 감히 그분께 묻지 못하였다.
Commentary
28-34. The doctor of the law who asks Jesus this question is obviously an upright man who is sincerely seeking the truth. He was impressed by Jesus’ earlier reply (vv. 18-27) and he wants to learn more from him. His question is to the point and Jesus devotes time to instructing him, though he will soon castigate the scribes, of whom this man is one (cf. Mk 12:38ff).

28-34. 예수님께 이 질문을 한 율법학자는 충심으로 진리를 추구하는 분명히 올바른 사람이다. 그 사람은 예수님께서 하신 말씀 (18-27절)에 감동을 받았고 그래서 예수님의 가르침을 더 받고 싶어한다. 그는 핵심적인 질문을 했고 예수님께서는 시간을 내셔서 그에게 가르침을 주신다. 곧 예수님께서는 그가 포함되어 있는 율법학자들을 나무라실 것이지만 (마르코 12,38 이하 참조).
Jesus sees in this man not just a scribe but a person who is looking for the truth. And his teaching finds its way into the man’s heart. The scribe repeats what Jesus says, savoring it, and our Lord offers him an affectionate word which encourages his definitive conversion: “You are not fare from the kingdom of God.” This encounter reminds us of his meeting with Nicodemus (cf. Jn 3:1ff).
예수님께서는 이 사람을 단지 율법학자가 아닌 진리를 찾는 사람으로 보신다. 그리고 그는 그분의 가르침에 감동한다. 율법학자는 예수님의 말씀을 반복하며 음미한다. 우리 주님께서는 그에게 친밀한 말씀을 하시고 그 말씀으로 그 율법학자는 결정적인 개종을 할 힘을 얻는다: “너는 하느님의 나라에서 멀리 있지 않다.” 이 만남은 우리에게 예수님의 니코데모와의 만남을 상기시킨다 (요한 3,1 이하 참조).
30. This commandment of the Old Law, ratified by Jesus, shows, above all, God’s great desire to engage in intimate conversation with man: “Would it not have sufficed to publish a permission giving us leave to love him? [...] He makes a stronger declaration of his passionate love of us, and commands us to love him with all our power, lest the consideration of his majesty and our misery, which make so great a distance and inequality between us, or some other pretext, divert us from his love. In this he well shows that he did not leave in us for nothing the natural inclination to love him, for to the end that it may not be idle, he urges us by his general commandment to employ it, and that this commandment may be effected, there is no living man he has not furnished abundantly with all means requisite thereto” (St Francisco de Sales, Treatise on the Love of God, book 2 chap. 8).

Brothers and sisters: The levitical priests were many because they were prevented by death from remaining in office, but Jesus, because he remains forever, has a priesthood that does not pass away. Therefore, he is always able to save those who approach God through him, since he lives forever to make intercession for them. It was fitting that we should have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, higher than the heavens. He has no need, as did the high priests, to offer sacrifice day after day, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did that once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints men subject to weakness to be high priests, but the word of the oath, which was taken after the law, appoints a son, who has been made perfect forever.

26 사실 우리는 이와 같은 대사제가 필요하였습니다. 거룩하시고 순수하시고 순결하시고 죄인들과 떨어져 계시며 하늘보다 더 높으신 분이 되신 대사제이십니다. 27 그분께서는 다른 대사제들처럼 날마다 먼저 자기 죄 때문에 제물을 바치고 그 다음으로 백성의 죄 때문에 제물을 바칠 필요가 없으십니다. 당신 자신을 바치실 때에 이 일을 단 한 번에 다 이루신 것입니다. 28 율법은 약점을 지닌 사람들을 대사제로 세우지만, 율법 다음에 이루어진 맹세의 그 말씀은 영원히 완전하게 되신 아드님을 대사제로 세웁니다.
