MY FATHER'S SON

<b>"You build the tombs of the prophets, but it was your fathers who murdered them." —Luke 11:47</b><br><br>

 

하느님의 아들

<b>“바로 너희 조상들이 죽인 예언자들의 무덤을 너희가 만들기 때문이다.”—루카 11:47</b><br><br>

 

 

 

The Pharisees, the "religious elite" of Jesus' day, used to <b>moan</b>: "Had we lived in our <b>forefather</b>s' time we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets' blood" (Mt 23:30). This claim of theirs <b>got under Jesus' skin</b>, and He said in response, "Thus you show that you are the sons of the prophets' murderers. Now it is your turn: fill up the vessel measured out by your forefathers" (Mt 23:31-32). They criticized the sins of their fathers, while committing the same sins themselves. <br><br>

예수님 시대의 “종교 귀족” 바리사이들은 탄식하곤 했습니다: “우리가 조상들 시대에 살았더라면 예언자들을 죽이는 일에 가담하지 않았을 것이다” (마태 23:30). 예수님은 그들의 주장에 노기를 띠시며 이렇게 응대하십니다. “그렇게 하여 너희는 예언자들을 살해한 자들의 자손임을 스스로 증언한다. 그러니 너희 조상들이 시작한 짓을 마저 하여라” (마태 23:31-32). 그들은 스스로 같은 죄를 저지르면서도, 자신들의 조상들을 비판합니다. <br><br>

 

Today, we white "religious folks" say we're <b>appalled</b> at the treatment of black people by our white ancestors. We tell ourselves that black people now have equal opportunities for education and employment, ignoring the millions of unemployed blacks. <br><br>

오늘날 “신앙을 가진” 백인들은 조상들이 흑인들에게 저질렀던 짓들이 소름 끼친다고들 합니다. 그러면서 스스로들 지금은 흑인들도 교육과 고용에 있어 평등하다고 자부합니다. 수백만 흑인 실업자는 생각하지 않고 말입니다. <br><br>

 

The nails were driven into Jesus' hands and feet for all people, yet we continue our sinful <b>prejudice</b>. We say we wonder how anyone or any group could commit such <b>atrocities</b> as Hitler and the Nazis did. Meanwhile, Jesus wonders how we can stand by <b>idly</b> while millions upon millions of children are cut to pieces inside the womb. <br><br>

예수님은 인류를 위하여 못 박혔건만, 우리는 아직도 죄스런 편견에서 벗어나지 못하고 있습니다. 개인이나 집단이 히틀러와 나찌의 잔학 행위 같은 짓을 저지를 수 있었다는 것이 놀랍다고들 우리는 말하지만, 예수님은 셀 수 없이 많은 태아들이 엄마 배속에서 조각조각 잘려나가는 것을 우리가 수수방관 하고 있을 수 있다는 것에 놀라십니다. <br><br>

 

Let's stop filling up the <b>vessels measured out</b> by our forefathers (Mt 23:32). The Lord calls us to repent, be forgiven, be holy in His sight, and full of love (Eph 1:4, 7). <br><br>

조상들이 심판 받았던 진노의 그릇을 우리는 채우지 맙시다 (마태 23:32 참조). 주님께서는 우리가 회개하여, 그 풍성한 사랑으로, 당신 앞에서 거룩하고 흠 없는 사람이 되게 하시려고 우리를 부르고 계십니다 (에페 1:4, 7). <br><br>

 

<b> moan </b> 1. (…으로) 신음하다, 끙끙거리다[ with]. ▷CRY  2. (바람 따위가) 신음하는[잉잉거리는] 듯한 소리를 내다.<br>

<b> forefather </b> 선조, 조상.<br>

<b> got under Jesus’ skin </b>: 속어형 구어체.  Get under someone’s skin 으로 쓰이는데, 누구의 피부 아래에 무엇인가 들어가니, 화나게 하거나, 마음을 움직이다 는 뜻.  Jesus’ 가 소유격인데, Jesus’s 와 같이 s 를 두개 겹쳐 표기하지 않는 것은, 소유격 주체 즉 Jesus 의 발음이 s 로 끝나므로, 만약 apostrophe  S ( ‘s) 를 붙이게 되면 발음이 겹치기 때문. <br>

<b> appall </b> 소름끼치게 하다, 실색케 하다, 섬뜩하게 하다<br>

<b> prejudice </b> 편견, 악감, 적대감 <br>

<b> atrocity </b> 1. 흉악, 극악, 잔학, 흉포성. 2. 악행, 잔학 행위. <br>

<b> idly </b> 1. 아무 일도 하지 않고, 게으르게, 멍청히. 2. 무익하게, 헛되이.  <br>

<b> vessel </b>  3. 용기, 그릇. the vessels of wrath 〈성서〉 진노의 그릇, 하느님의 노여움을 살 사람들(←로마서 9:22). <br>

<b> measure out</b> 재다, 계량하다; 재어[되어]서 나누다, 분배하다. <br>
