Most of us are middle-class and consequently are among the richest people in the world. Therefore, Jesus' words apply to us: "I assure you, only with difficulty will a rich man enter into the kingdom of God" (Mt 19:23). Although there is nothing wrong with being rich (see Sir 31:8-11), Jesus indicated that it was almost impossible (Mt 19:26) not to grow  haughty  from our riches (Ez 28:5). In the book of Proverbs , Agur prayed to not become rich "lest, being full," he deny the Lord, "saying, 'Who is the Lord?' " (Prv 30:8, 9) Moses warned the Israelites in their prosperity to be careful not to "become haughty of heart and unmindful of the Lord" (Dt 8:14). Hosea  observed that the more prosperous the Israelites were, the more involved they became in idolatry  (Hos 10:1). Money, possessions, and wealth are a "temptation and a trap" (1 Tm 6:9), which are almost impossible not to fall into.

우리 대부분은 중산층이기에 세계에서 가장 부유한 사람에 속합니다. 그러므로 예수님의 다음과 같은 말씀아 우리에게 적용될 수 있겠습니다. “내가 다시 너희에게 말한다. 부자가 하느님 나라에 들어가는 것보다 낙타가 바늘구멍으로 빠져나가는 것이 더 쉽다” (마태오 19:23). 물론 부자가 되는 것 그 자체가 나쁜 것은 아닙니다만(시락서 31:8-11 참조), 예수님께서는 우리가 가진 부와 재물로부터 오만이 자라나지 않는(에스라서28:5) 것은 거의 불가능하다(마태오 19:26)고 지적하십니다. 잠언서를 보면, 아구르는 자신이 배부른 뒤에 불신자가 되어 “주님이 누구냐?” 하고 말하게 되는 부자가 되지 말게(잠언 30:8, 9) 해달라고 기도합니다. 모세는 이스라엘인들에게 행여나 “교만한 생각으로 너희 하느님 야훼를 잊는 일”이 없도록(신명기 8:14) 주의해야 한다고 이스라엘 왕국에서 경고한 적 있습니다. 또한 호세아는 이스라엘에 열매가 많아 풍요로워질수록 제단들도 많이 만들고 땅이 좋아질수록 기념 기둥들도 좋게 만드는 것과 같은 우상숭배 행위에 더 관여하게 되었다고 말했습니다.(호세아서 10:1) 돈, 재산, 그리고 부는 “유혹과 올가미”(1티모 6:9)와 같으며, 우리가 그것에 거의 예외 없이 빠져듭니다.

 

Pope John Paul II teaches: "This super-development, which consists in an excessive availability of every kind of material goods for the benefit of certain social groups, easily makes people slaves of 'possession' and of immediate  gratification " (On Social Concern, 28, emphasis his). The Pope concludes: "I therefore exhort the disciples of Christ and all Christian communities from families to  dioceses , from parishes to religious institutes to carry out a sincere review of their lives regarding  solidarity  with the poor" (Mission of the Redeemer, 60). "We need to turn to a more  austere  way of life" (Mission of the Redeemer, 59).

교황 요한 바오로 2세께서는 다음과 같은 가르침을 주십니다. “특정 사회 집단의 이익을 위한 온갖 물질적인 것들의 과도한 유용성 가운데 이루어진 이 막강한 발전은 쉽사리 사람들을 ‘소유’와 즉각적인 충족의 노예로 전락시킵니다(On Social Concern, 28, 강조된 부분은 원전 그대로). 이어서 교황님께서는 “그러므로 나는 그리스도와 가정에서부터 교구까지, 작은 교회에서부터 종교적인 단체에 이르는 모든 크리스챤의 공동체에 대한 규율을 가난한 이들과의 연대에 관해 그들의 삶을 진실로 되돌아 볼 수 있도록 권고합니다” (Mission of the Redeemer, 60). “우리는 보다 금욕하는 생활 방식으로 회귀해야 합니다” (Mission of the Redeemer, 59)라는 결론을 내리십니다.
