MASTERPIECE OF THE MASTER

위대한 작품

 "당신은 여인들 가운데에서 가장 복되시며 당신 태중의 아기도 복되십니다."— Luke 1:42

 

When God looked at all He had created, He called it "very good" (Gn 1:31). Creation was a masterpiece of perfect harmony. Then we sinned and disfigured  the masterpiece. With sin, death entered the world, and we were barred from the tree of life (Gn 3:24).

하느님께서는 창조해 내신 것들 모두를 바라보시더니 “참 좋은 것” (창세기 1:31) 이라고 명명하셨습니다. 그 창조물은 완벽한 조화에 의한 걸작이었습니다. 그런데 훗날 우리는 죄를 지었고 그 창조물의 가치를 손상시키고 말았습니다. 죄를 지음으로써 죽음이 세상에 등장했고, 우리는 생명의 나무로의 접근이 금지 되었습니다 (창세기 3:24).

 

Jesus hung on a tree (Acts 13:29) and restored life to a deadly world. He restored the masterpiece of creation. Just as Eve began the ruin of creation, Mary began the restoration of the masterpiece. By the grace of her Son, she was sinless, "holy and blameless in His sight" (Eph 1:4), and therefore not subject to death. She is like the original masterpiece of creation. She was "very good," "blessed among women." She is the new Eve, the true "mother of all the living" (Gn 3:20).

예수님께서는 나무 위에서 죽임을 당하셨고 (사도행전 13:29) 죽음의 세계에 생명을 되찾아 주셨습니다. 그 분께서는 창조의 작품을 복원하셨습니다. 하와가 창조의 파괴를 시작했던 것과 마찬가지로, 성모 마리아께서는 그 위대한 작품의 복원을 시작하셨습니다. 당신의 아드님이 받으신 은총에 의해 성모 마리아님은 죄가 없는, “주님 앞에서 거룩하고 흠 없는”(에페소서 1:4), 그럼으로써 죽음에 속박되지 않는 분이 되셨습니다. 성모 마리아께서는 “참으로 좋으시며”, “여인 중에 축복받은 분”이십니다. 당신께서는 새로운 하와이시며, 진실로 “살아 있는 모든 것의 어머니”(창세기 3:20) 이십니다.

 

This does not glorify Mary at the expense of Jesus. Mary does not take glory away from Jesus anymore than a masterpiece draws attention away from the artist. The Master is praised because of the masterpiece. It focuses attention on the Master. Shout with Mary: "My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord" (Lk 1:46).

이것은 예수님 대신 성모 마리아님을 찬미하자는 것이 아닙니다. 명작 예술품에 관심이 쏠린다 해도 그 작가 자신에게 쏠리는 관심 또한 여전한 것과 마찬가지로, 성모 마리아님을 찬미한다 해도 그 때문에 예수님 영광이 빛 바래는 것은 아닙니다. 주님은 위대한 작품 때문에 칭송 받는 것입니다. 위대한 작품으로 인해 주님을 더욱 주목하게 됩니다. 그러므로 성모 마리아님과 더불어 외칩니다: “내 영혼이 주님을 칭송합니다”(루카 1:46).

Mary does not take glory away from Jesus anymore than a masterpiece draws attention away from the artist.: not A anymore(any longer) than B.  B 가 아닌 것처럼 A 도 아니다.  즉, A masterpiece does NOT draw attention away from the artist.  Just likewise, St. Mary does NOT take glory away from Jesus.
