WORLD CUP

월드컵, 세기의 잔

“우리는 살아 있으면서도 늘 예수님 때문에 죽음에 넘겨집니다. 우리의 죽을 육신에서 예수님의 생명도 드러나게 하려는 것입니다.” — 코린토 2서 4:11

 

James' mom asked Jesus to give her boys a promotion and seat them at His right and left hand. Jesus told them they didn't know what they were asking and questioned them if they could drink of the His cup (Mt 20:22). " 'We can,' they said. He told them, 'From the cup I drink of, you shall drink. But sitting at My right hand or My left is not Mine to give' " (Mt 20:22-23).

야고보의 어머니는 예수님께 그녀의 아들들이 더 높은 자리에 올라 그분의 오른쪽과 왼쪽에 앉게 해달라고 청하였습니다. 예수께서는 그들은 자신들이 청하는 것이 무엇인지도 모른다고 말씀하시면서 그 분께서 마시려는 잔을 그들도 마실 수 있는지 물으셨습니다. (마태 20:22) 그들이 “할 수 있습니다.” 하고 대답하자, 예수님께서 그들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “너희는 내 잔을 마실 것이다. 그러나 내 오른쪽과 왼쪽에 앉는 것은 내가 허락할 일이 아니다.” (마태 20:22-23)

 

The cup Jesus was referring to was the cup of suffering and death. So James as well as John unknowingly agreed to suffer and die. Jesus would take James up on his offer, but first James had to be prepared. Jesus took James with Him to see Jairus' daughter raised (Lk 8:51). He took him up Transfiguration Mountain (Lk 9:28). James still wasn't ready. He indicated he wasn't when he wanted to kill the Samaritans (Lk 9:54). He could not fathom dying for the enemy instead of putting the enemy to death. Jesus took him to the garden of Gethsemani (Mt 26:37). James fell asleep in class (Mt 26:40ff).

예수님께서 말씀하신 잔은 수난과 죽음의 잔이었습니다. 따라서 요한 뿐만 아니라 야고보 또한 미처 알지 못하는 채로 수난당하고 죽을 것에 찬성한 것이었습니다. 예수님께서는 야고보의 청대로 그를 데리고 올라가실 수도 있었지만 그보다 먼저 야고보를 준비시켜야만 했습니다. 예수님께서는 야이로의 딸을 살리는 자리에 야고보를 데리고 가셨습니다. (루카 8:51) 그 분께서는 변모의 산으로 그를 데리고 가셨습니다. (루카 9:28) 야고보는 그때까지도 준비가 되어 있지 않았습니다. 사마리아인을 죽이고 싶어했을 때 야고보가 아직 준비되어 있지 않음을 알 수 있었습니다. (루카 9:54) 그는 원수를 죽이는 대신 원수를 위해 죽는 것이 어떤 의미가 있는지를 알지 못했습니다. 예수님께서는 겟사마니 동산에 그를 데리고 가셨습니다. (마태 26:37) 야고보는 잠들었습니다. (마태 26:40 이하 참조)

 

But through the passion, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus, and especially through the coming of the Spirit, James learned the way of the cross. He was the first apostle martyred. He drank the cup; he was beheaded because of his faith in Jesus (Acts 12:2).

하지만 예수님의 수난과 죽음, 부활, 그리고 승천을 통해서, 무엇보다도 성령강림을 통해서 야고보는 십자가의 길을 배웠습니다. 그는 사도들 중 첫번째로 순교하였습니다. 그는 잔을 마셨습니다. 그리고 예수님에 대한 믿음 때문에 참수형을 맞았던 것입니다. (사도 12:2)
