세상의 빛

“나는 너를 멸망시키지 않으리라.” —호세아 11:9

 

Recently, my house caught on fire. My son, a seminarian, was asleep in the bedroom next to the room where the fire raged. He and I fled through the smoke without time to save any of his possessions. Hours later, after the firemen extinguished the blaze, we were allowed to return to the house to inspect the damage. My son's room was charred, and many of his possessions were destroyed in the fire. His guitar, which he uses frequently to lead people in worshipping God, had been lying unprotected by his bed. It was covered with soot and ashes. Though the fire had blazed around the guitar, incredibly it was undamaged, and miraculously was still in tune.

최근 제 집에 화재가 났었는데, 신학생인 제 아들 방 옆까지 불길이 사납게 번졌습니다. 워낙 급해서 아들은 물건 하나도 챙기지 못한채 저와 함께 연기 속을 빠져나왔습니다. 소방관들이 불길을 잡은 뒤 한참 후에야 저희는 피해를 살피러 들어가볼 수 있었습니다. 아들 방은 온통 그을었고, 물건들은 대부분 불길에 못쓰게 되어버렸습니다. 제 아들이 사람들과 찬송을 하며 반주할 때 자주 쓰던 기타도 침대 옆에 덮개도 없이 검댕과 재에 뒤덮인 채 놓여 있었습니다. 믿을 수 없는 것은, 세찬 화염에도 불구하고 그 기타만은 멀쩡했으며, 기적처럼 아직도 제 소리를 내는 것이었습니다.

 

God wants us to be like that guitar. We are instruments of God, to be used for His glory. A fiery, spiritual battle rages around us, and we're naturally afraid of getting burned. But God is our Protector, and He promises: "When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned; the flames shall not consume you" (Is 43:2).

하느님께서는 우리가 그 기타처럼 되기를 원하십니다. 하느님의 도구인 우리는 그분의 영광을 위하여 쓰입니다. 불같은 영적전쟁이 사방에서 격렬하고, 우리는 타죽을까봐 본능적으로 겁먹습니다. 그러나 하느님께서는 우리의 보호자로서 약속하십니다: “네가 불 한가운데를 걷는다 해도 너는 타지 않고 불꽃이 너를 태우지 못하리라” (이사 43:2).

 

We are to be like the burning bush, ablaze with the fire of the Spirit yet not burned out (Ex 3:2). We must let our God, Who is a consuming Fire (Heb 12:29), make of us a "lamp, set aflame and burning bright" (Jn 5:35).

우리는, 성령의 불로 이글거리면서도 타 없어지지 않는, 불타는 떨기나무와 같이 (탈출 3:3) 되어야 할 것입니다. 다 태워버리시는 불이신 하느님께 (히브 12:29) 우리를 “타오르며 빛을내는 등불” (요한 5:35)로 만들어 주시도록 해야 하겠습니다.

 

Jesus has come to set a fire on the earth (Lk 12:49). Don't be afraid of burnout. Be His lanterns. Be "the light of the world" (Mt 5:14). Let nations walk by His light shining through your life (cf Is 60:3).

예수님께서는 세상에 불을 지르러 오셨다고  (루카 12:49) 해서 타 죽을 걱정은 하지 마십시오. 그분의 등불로 쓰여 “세상의 빛”이 되십시오 (마태 5:14). 당신의 삶을 통해 빛나는 예수님의 광명을 향하여 세상사람들이 찾아오게 하십시오 (이사 60:3 참조).
