일할 때의 믿음
“그들이 믿지 않으므로 그곳에서는 기적을 많이 일으키지 않으셨다.” 마태오 13:58
On this memorial of St. Joseph the Worker, the Church holds up St. Joseph as an example of a worker who let God have total control over his work. Many people move their families from place to place because of their work. Joseph moved his family from place to place because of his obedient faithfulness to God's commands.
노동자 성 요셉 기념일을 맞아, 교회는 자신의 일을 하느님 뜻에 맡긴 성요셉을 노동자의 전범으로 삼고 있습니다. 많은 사람들이 일 때문에 가족들을 이 곳 저 곳으로 이사 시킵니다. 요셉은 하느님의 명령에 순종하는 믿음 때문에 자신의 가족을 이사 시켰습니다.
Each time he moved, Joseph had to go back to square one to start his work. He moved from his hometown of Nazareth to Bethlehem because of the census (Lk 2:4). Joseph placed a higher priority on serving Jesus and Mary than on building up his carpentry business. Then after Jesus was born, Joseph presumably began to establish a carpentry shop in Bethlehem. Joseph was a worker, but his main work was to have faith in his Foster-Son, Jesus (Jn 6:29). Working for Jesus took priority over Joseph's job.
요셉은 이사할 때마다 처음부터 다시 일을 시작해야 했습니다. 인구 조사 때문에 고향 나자렛을 떠나 베들레헴으로 옮겨 갔고 (루카 2:4), 목수업을 번창시키는 것보다 예수님과 마리아를 섬기는 일에 더 큰 우선순위를 두었습니다. 이윽고 예수님께서 태어나시자 요셉은 베들레헴에서 목공소를 열었던 것 같습니다. 요셉은 노동자였지만 본업은 양아들이신 예수님께 대한 믿음을 가지는 것이었습니다. (요한 6:29) 예수님을 위해 일하는 것이 요셉 자신의 일보다 더 중요했던 것이죠.
God then commanded Joseph to drop everything and flee immediately to Egypt (Mt 2:13). It's doubtful Joseph was even able to bring along his tools. In a new land, with a new language, as a foreigner and refugee, somehow Joseph had to find work and support the Holy Family. "All depends on faith" (Rm 4:16), and Joseph's work was completely guided by his faith (see Jn 6:29).
그 때 하느님께서는 모든 것을 포기하고 이집트로 즉시 달아나라고 요셉에게 명령하셨습니다 (마태 2:13). 요셉이 자기 도구들이나 제대로 챙겨갔는지 의문입니다. 새로운 땅에서, 새로운 언어로, 이방인이자 망명자로서, 요셉은 어떻게 하든 일을 찾고 성가정을 부양해야 했습니다. “모든 것은 믿음에 달려 있습니다.” (로마 4:16) 요셉의 믿음이 그의 일을 온전히 인도한 것입니다. (요한 6:29 참조)
After a few years, Joseph would have established himself in Egypt. Once again, God called him "out of Egypt" (Mt 2:15) back to his hometown, Nazareth. This time, God prospered the work of Joseph's hands (Ps 90:17) by sending him back to his hometown, his tools, and his original clientele. God restored Joseph's work because Joseph faithfully put his work at the service of God.
요셉은 몇 년 뒤에 이집트에서 자리잡을 수도 있었을 것입니다. 다시 한번, 하느님께서 그에게 “이집트를 떠나” (마태 2:15)라고 하여 고향인 나자렛으로 불러내셨습니다. 이번에 하느님께서는 일하는 도구와 단골 손님들을 그에게 돌려보내 요셉의 손이 하는 일이 번창토록 하셨습니다. (시편 90:17) 요셉이 하느님을 섬기는 것을 충실하게 자기의 일로 삼았기 때문에 하느님께서는 요셉이 원래 하던 일을 계속 할 수 있도록 해 주신 것입니다.
