BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT
Jesus said "to Thomas: 'Take your finger and examine My hands. Put your hand into My side. Do not persist in your unbelief, but believe!' Thomas said in response, 'My Lord and my God!' " —John 20:27-28
한 점의 의혹도 품지 않고
“ 그러고 나서 토마스에게 이르셨다. “ 네 손가락을 여기 대 보고 내 손을 보아라. 네 손을 뻗어 내 옆구리에 넣어 보아라. 그리고 의심을 버리고 믿어라.” 토마스가 예수님께 대답하였다. “ 저의 주님, 저의 하느님!”. —요한 20:27-28
We hear a lot about "doubting Thomas," as if he was worse than the other apostles. However, the name "Thomas" means "twin," and the apostles were his spiritual twins. All the apostles were doubters. Thomas admitted it; the others didn't. If they believed in the risen Christ beyond a shadow of a doubt, they would not have been behind locked doors because of fear (Jn 20:26).
“토마의 불신앙”이 자주 언급되다 보니 그는 믿음이 가장 약한 사도로 비쳐집니다. 그러나, “토마”의 뜻이 “쌍동이”이듯이, 사도들은 그와 영적인 쌍동이들로서 그들의 믿음도 마찬가지였습니다. 토마는 그것을 표현했고 다른 사도들은 입을 다물고 있었던 것 뿐이지요. 만약 그들이 한 점 의혹도 없이 그리스도의 부활을 믿었다면, 잠긴 문 뒤에서 두려움에 떨고 있지는 않았을 것입니다 (요한 20:26).
Most of us also doubt. We must admit it and be delivered from doubt because it ruins everything. For example, if you have the slightest doubt your spouse is faithful to you, that doubt can ruin your marriage. If doubt casts its shadow over your prayer, even Mass and Holy Communion will be something "to get over with." Doubt is a killer. We must deal with it before it ruins us.
사실 우리들 대부분은 의심합니다. 의심은 모든 것을 망치는 것이므로 우리는 그것을 고백함으로써 의심으로부터 해방되어야 하겠습니다. 부부간의 신뢰에 작은 금이라도 가면, 그 결혼생활을 망치는 것과도 같습니다. 의심의 그늘이 우리의 기도를 덮으면, 미사와 영성체조차도 “요식행위”에 그치고 맙니다. 의심은 파괴자입니다. 우리를 망치기 전에 서둘러 몰아냅시다.
As human beings, we will have doubts cross our minds until our dying day. However, we can refuse to hold on to them and to let them affect our actions and inaction. We must come out from under the shadow of these doubts, but this cannot be done by our own power — "not by might, not by power, but by the Spirit" (Zec 4:6, our translation).
우리는 인간이라 죽는 날까지 우리의 마음을 거스르는 의심이 생겨날 수도 있습니다. 그러나, 거기에 머무르지 않음으로써 우리의 실천에 영향을 주지 않도록 할 수 있습니다. 우리는 이 의심의 그늘에서 벗어나야 합니다. 그것은 우리의 힘만으로 되어지는 것이 아니라 — “권력으로도 힘으로도 되지 않고 오직 성령에 의해서만” (즈카 4:6 Presentation ministries 저자의 번역) 가능합니다.
Jesus is breathing on us: "Receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22). The Spirit confirms us beyond a shadow of a doubt.
예수께서 우리에게 숨을 불어넣으며 말씀하십니다: “성령을 받아라” (요한 20:22). 성령으로 인해 우리는 한 점 의혹도 품지 않게 됩니다.
