"Whoever would save his life will lose it."(Mark 8:35)
Jesus's words about saving and losing our lives would inspire only fear in us if all we looked at pain and loss. Praise God, then, that he wants to open our eyes to see a fuller picture of his plan of salvation. Jesus didn't die just so we would lose our old lives. He died so we could receive his risen life! We can look upon the cross with awe, wonder, and anticipation of the good things God promises. Because Jesus died on the cross, our hearts can be cleansed and our minds made anew.
Jesus invites us to new life, not just in heaven someday, but here and now. We can exhaust ourselves by giving into fallen desires and chasing the things of this world. But if we do, we risk losing the treasure of the life God intended for us. As we come to "deny" ourselves and turn our lives over to Jesus, we are given a new and better existence.
Jesus isn't asking us to deny ourselves every pleasure ­ that's not the point. He wants us to deny the sinful drives within us that seek to control our lives. He wants us to turn our hearts to God so that the Holy Spirit can empower us to live according to the new life we received at baptism. Independence, unforgiveness, legalism, worldly approval, perfectionism, self-glorification: They only lead to unhappiness. These are the things that Jesus came to put to death in us.
Yes, there is loss through the cross. But what do we lose? Slavery to sin. And what do we gain? A cleansed conscience, freedom from patterns of sin, intimacy with God, and a rediscovery of who we are in God's sight! Jesus longs to see us stop thinking we must gain victory on our own over the things that drive us. He longs to see us lay our self-sufficiency down at his cross so that we can receive the power of his Spirit to live a new life. Let's look to him for our healing and deliverance.

you intended me to be.
I want to trust Jesus' promise

“정녕 자기 목숨을 구하려는 사람은 목숨을 잃을 것이다.”(마르 8,35)
우리가 고통과 상실만을 본다면 목숨을 잃고 구함을 두고서 예수님이 하신 말씀은 우리에게 두려운 생각만 불러일으킬 것입니다. 그렇다면, 당신 구원 계획의 총체적 그림을 보도록 우리 눈을 열어 주고 싶어하시는 하느님께 찬미 드리세요. 예수님께서 돌아가신 것은 우리가 낡은 생명을 벗어버리도록 하기 위한 것만이 아니고, 부활하신 당신의 생명을 받을 수 있게 하기 위함이었습니다! 이제 우리는 하느님께서 약속하신 좋은 것들에 대한 경외심과 놀라움, 기대를 가지고 십자가를 바라볼 수 있습니다. 예수님께서 십자가상에서 돌아가심으로 인해 우리 마음이 깨끗해지고 우리의 정신이 새로워질 수 있습니다.
예수님께서 우리를 새로운 삶으로 초대하시는 것은, 훗날 천국에서만이 아니라 ‘바로 지금 이곳’에서입니다. 우리는 헛된 욕망과 세속의 것들을 뒤쫓느라 지쳐버릴 수 있습니다. 그렇게 산다면 우리는 하느님께서 주고자 하시는 생명의 보화를 놓치고 말 것입니다. 우리 자신을 ‘버리고’ 예수님께 의지할 때 우리에게 더 나은 새 삶이 주어집니다.  예수님께서는 우리에게 인간적인 낙을 모조리 버리라고 하지 않으십니다. 요지는 그게 아닙니다. 그분은 우리 인생을 지배하려 드는 내면의 죄의 경향을 우리가 거부하기를 원하십니다. 우리가 세례 때 받은 새로운 삶을 살 수 있도록 성령께서 우리의 힘을 북돋아 줄 수 있게 우리 마음을 하느님께 향하기를 원하십니다. 자만, 불용, 율법주의, 속된 칭찬, 완벽주의, 자화자찬 등은 우리를 불행으로 내몰 뿐입니다. 예수님께서는 우리 안에서 바로 그런 것들을 쓸어버리려고 이 세상에 오셨습니다. 
그렇습니다. 십자가를 통해 잃는 것이 있습니다. 그게 무엇일까요? 죄에 예속됨입니다. 그럼 얻는 것은 무엇입니까? 그건 깨끗한 양심, 죄의 굴레에서 벗어남, 하느님과의 친밀함, 그리고 하느님의 눈에 보이는 우리 모습을 재발견하는 것입니다! 예수님께서는 우리 자신의 힘으로 유혹을 이겨보겠다는 생각은 이제 그만 멈추라고 하십니다. 또한 모든 자만심을 십자가 아래 내려두고 성령의 힘을 받아 새 삶을 살라고 하십니다. 우리 모두 치유와 해방을 주시는 주님께로 향합시다.

십자가 아래에 내려놓아야 할 것들이 무엇인지
보여 주십시오. 누구든지
자기 목숨을 잃는 자는 목숨을 얻을 것이라고
하신 예수님의 약속을 저는 믿습니다.”
