Many of Jesus' disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father." As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."

REFLECTION
God uses ordinary things of life in coming to us personally to renew and strengthen us, to assure us of forgiveness and salvation. Christ is with us in all of life. "Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them." (John 6:56) When the disciples complained about this difficult saying, Jesus asked if they were scandalized. Not all the followers of Jesus could accept his words. Some turned away and left him. Only the twelve disciples seemed faithful. In this setting Simon Peter speaks for the group when they are given the choice between deserting their Lord or not. Peter makes a confession of faith: "Lord, to can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."

하느님께서는 일상의 일을 통해 우리에게 다가오셔서 우리의 마음을 새롭게 하시고, 마음을 단단히 하시고, 용서와 구원에 대해 확신시켜주신다. 예수님께서는 우리와 늘 함께 하신다. “내 살을 먹고 내 피를 마시는 사람은 내 안에 머무르고, 나도 그 사람 안에 머무른다.” (요한 6,56) 제자들이 이 어려운 말씀에 대해 투덜거릴 때 예수님께서는 당신의 말씀이 귀에 거슬리는지 물으신다. 예수님을 따르는 제자들 모두가 그분의 말씀을 받아들이지는 못했다. 몇몇은 마음을 돌리고 그분을 떠났다. 오직 12 제자들만 충실했던 것 같다. 이 장면에서 제자들이 그들의 주인을 떠나야 할 지 말아야 할지 기로에 섰을 때 제자들을 대표해서 베드로는 믿음을 고백한다: “주님, 저희가 누구에게 가겠습니까? 주님께는 영원한 생명의 말씀이 있습니다. 스승님께서 하느님의 거룩하신 분이라고 저희는 믿어 왔고 또 그렇게 알고 있습니다.”

This difficult chapter of John's Gospel points to an essential truth about Christian faith and life sometimes misunderstood, especially by people outside of the community of believers. Being a Christian is not primarily subscribing to a set of commandments, rules and regulations, nor is it agreeing with certain teachings. Being a Christian is a personal commitment to Jesus Christ, which leads to discipleship. When Jesus asked the twelve if they also wanted to leave him, Peter responded with conviction - they will follow him.

요한복음의 이 장은 크리스챤 신앙의 본질적인 진리를 다루고 있으며 이 진리는 가끔 잘못 이해되고 있으며 특히 교회 밖의 사람들에 의해 그렇다. 크리스챤이 되는 것은 기본적으로 일련의 명령, 계율, 그리고 규정에 동의하거나 어떤 가르침에 동의하는 것이 아니다. 크리스챤이 되는 것은 예수님께 자신을 위탁하는 것이며 이는 자연스럽게 예수님의 제자가 되는 것이다. 예수님께서 12 제자들에게 역시 떠나겠냐고 물으셨을 때 베드로는 확신을 가지고 대답했다 – 그들은 예수님을 따를 것입니다.

 

In today's reading, the disciples were disturbed because they had to make a decision, a commitment to follow Jesus with all the uncertainty and risk involved. It would be tempting to play it safe and to not stake your life on this Jesus, who might or might not be the Messiah. But Jesus made it plain that a radical, personal commitment is the proper response to the graciousness of God, who comes to love us and save us. Faith is the word, which best describes our response to the God, who enters the world fully and completely in Jesus in order to love us and forgive us.

오늘의 복음에서 제자들은 망설인다. 왜냐하면 그들은 결정, 즉 모든 위험과 불확실성에도 불구하고 예수님을 따라야 할 확약을 해야 하기 때문이다. 메시아일 수도 있고 아닐 수도 있는 이 예수님께 자신의 생명을 걸지 않고 안전하게 대처할 유혹을 느낄만하다. 그러나 예수님께서는, 우리를 사랑하시고 구원하시기 위해 오시는 하느님의 자비에 대한 우리의 응당한 답변은 근본적이고 개인적인 위탁이라고 분명히 말씀하신다. 믿음은, 우리를 사랑하시고 구원하시기 위해 예수님 안에 온전히 세상에 오신 하느님께 대한 우리의 응답을 가장 잘 표현하는 단어이다.

 

And for what? That we might share in the gift of life eternal. Faith is not mere intellectual assent, a vague kind of agreement that something is true. It is staking our life on God's promise. It affects every area of our being. Christian faith is difficult because it calls on us to give up our independence and to trust totally in God. We like to have God in our lives, but on our own terms. We also want to have God available for emergencies. There are parts of our lives we'd like to hide from God. For some people the Church is fine unless it interferes with their daily life. There are attractive alternatives seeking our commitment - money, success, popularity, power, sex, and more.

그러면 무엇을 위해서 우리가 영원한 생명의 선물을 차지할 것인가? 믿음은 단순히 지적으로 동의하거나 어떤 것이 옳다고 희미하게 수긍하는 그런 것이 아니다. 그것은 하느님의 약속에 우리의 생명을 거는 것이다. 그것은 우리 존재의 모든 부문에 영향을 미친다. 크리스챤의 신앙은 우리의 독립을 포기하고 하느님을 전적으로 믿을 것을 요구하기 때문에 쉽지 않다. 우리는 우리 삶에서 하느님을 갖기를 원하지만 우리 방식대로 갖기를 원한다. 우리는 또한 위급할 때 하느님이 도와 주시기를 원한다. 살다 보면 하느님께 감추고 싶은 부분이 있다. 어떤 사람은 교회가 일상 생활에 참견하지만 않으면 좋다고 생각한다. 우리 자신을 위탁하고 싶은 다른 매력적인 대상들도 있다 – 돈, 성공, 평판(인기), 권력, 성, 등등.

 

Yet the God who comes to us in Jesus Christ calls us to total commitment. Only when Christ is number one in our lives will all the other blessings of life find their proper place. Christian faith touches every aspect of life. Like the twelve disciples, we are called to follow Jesus totally and without reservation. God is gracious to you and me, coming to us in Jesus Christ to love us and forgive us as we are and where we are. We are assured of his unfailing love and strength for each day. As the gracious God comes to us in this Eucharist, let us, like Israel of old, respond, "Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God."

그러나 예수님으로서 우리에게 오신 하느님께서는 우리에게 온전한 위탁을 요구하신다. 우리의 삶에서 예수님이 제일을 차지할 때에만 다른 모든 축복들이 제 자리를 찾게 된다. 크리스챤 신앙은 삶의 모든 부분에 영향을 준다. 12 제자들과 같이 우리도 예수님을 완전하게 주저함이 없이 따르도록 불림을 받는다. 하느님께서는 당신에게 그리고 내게 자비로우시다. 예수 그리스도로서 우리에게 오셔서 우리가 있는 곳에서 우리가 있는 모습 그래도 사랑하시고 용서해주신다. 우리는 그분의 변치 않는 사랑과 능력을 매일 확신한다. 이 성체 안에 자비로우신 하느님께서 우리에게 오실 때 우리는 옛 이스라엘같이 응답한다, “그러므로 우리도 주님을 위해 살겠습니다. 그분께서는 우리의 하느님이시기 때문입니다.”
