그날 곧 주간 첫날 저녁이 되자, 제자들은 유다인들이 두려워 문을 모두 잠가 놓고 있었다. 그런데 예수님께서 오시어 가운데에 서시며, “평화가 너희와 함께!” 하고 그들에게 말씀하셨다. 이렇게 말씀하시고 나서 당신의 두 손과 옆구리를 그들에게 보여 주셨다. 제자들은 주님을 뵙고 기뻐하였다. 예수님께서 다시 그들에게 이르셨다. “평화가 너희와 함께! 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것처럼 나도 너희를 보낸다.” 이렇게 이르시고 나서 그들에게 숨을 불어넣으며 말씀하셨다. “성령을 받아라. 너희가 누구의 죄든지 용서해 주면 그가 용서를 받을 것이고, 그대로 두면 그대로 남아 있을 것이다.”

Commentary:

19-20. Jesus appears to the Apostles on the evening of the day of  which He rose.  He presents Himself in their midst without any need for the doors to be opened, by using the qualities of His glorified body; but in order to dispel any impression that He is only a spirit He shows them His hands and His side: there is no longer any doubt about its being Jesus Himself, about His being truly risen from the dead.  He

greets them twice using the words of greeting customary among the Jews, with the same tenderness as He previously used put into this salutation.  These friendly words dispel the fear and shame the Apostles must have been feeling at behaving so disloyally during His passion: He has created the normal atmosphere of intimacy, and now He will endow them with transcendental powers.

 

19-20. 예수님께서는 부활하신 날 저녁에 사도들에게 나타나신다. 영광스럽게 되신 몸의 특성 상, 문을 통하지 않고 그들 가운데 서신다; 그러나 혼령 만이라는 오해를 불식시키기 위해 사도들에게 손과 옆구리를 보여주신다; 더 이상 의심할 수 없이 그분은 예수님이시고 죽음에서 진정으로 부활하신 분이시다. 예수님께서는 유다인들이 통상 나누는 인사말로 전에 하시던 대로 다정스런 목소리로 두 번 그들에게 인사하신다. 이 다정한 인사 말씀을 듣고 사도들은 두려움에서 벗어나고, 주님의 수난 동안 자신들이 불충했던 것에 대해 그들이 가졌던 부끄러운 마음도 잊는다: 예수님께서는 평온하고 친밀한 분위기를 만드시고, 이제 그들에게 초월적인 권능을 부여하실 것이다. 

 

21. Pope Leo XIII explained how Christ transferred His own mission to the Apostles: "What did He wish in regard to the Church founded, or about to be founded?  This: to transmit to it the same mission and the same mandate which He had received from the Father, that they should be perpetuated.  This He clearly resolved to do: this He actually did. `As the Father hath sent Me, even so I send you' (John 20:21).  `As Thou didst send Me into the world, so I have sent them into the world' (John 17:18).  [...]  When about to ascend into Heaven, He sends His Apostles in virtue of the same power by which He had been sent from the Father; and He charges them to spread abroad and propagate His teachings (cf. Matthew 28:18), so that those obeying the Apostles might be saved, and those disobeying should perish (cf. Mark 16:16). [...] Hence He commands that the teaching of the Apostles should be religiously accepted and piously kept as if it were His own: `He who hears you hears Me, and he who rejects you rejects Me' (Luke 10:16). Wherefore the Apostles are ambassadors of Christ as He is the ambassador of the Father" ([Pope] Leo XIII, "Satis Cognitum").

In this mission the bishops are the successors of the Apostles: "Christ sent the Apostles as He Himself had been sent by the Father, and then through the Apostles made their successors, the bishops, sharers in His consecration and mission.  The function of the bishops' ministry was handed over in a subordinate degree to priests so that they might be appointed in the order of the priesthood and be co-workers of the episcopal order for the proper fulfillment of the apostolic mission that had been entrusted to it by Christ" (Vatican II, "Presbyterorum Ordinis", 2).

22-23. The Church has always understood--and has in fact defined—that Jesus Christ here conferred on the Apostles authority to forgive sins, a power which is exercised in the Sacrament of Penance.  "The Lord then especially instituted the Sacrament of Penance when, after being risen from the dead, He breathed upon His disciples and said: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit...'  The consensus of all the Fathers has always acknowledged that by this action so sublime and words so clear the power of forgiving and retaining sins was given to the Apostles and their lawful successors for reconciling the faithful who have fallen after Baptism" (Council of Trent, "De Paenitentia", Chapter 1).

 

22-23. 교회는 예수 그리스도께서 고해성사에서 수행되는 권능, 즉 죄를 용서하는 권한을 사도들에게 부여하셨음을 항상 이해하여 왔고 그렇게 정의하고 있다. “주님께서는 죽음에서 부활하신 후에 제자들에게 숨을 불어 넣으며 다음과 같이 말씀하심으로써 특별히 고해성사를 세우셨다: ‘성령을 받아라..’ 지극히 숭고한 행위와 매우 명확한 말씀으로, 사도들과 그들의 합법적인 후계자들에게, 영세 후에 죄에 떨어진 믿는 이들의 화해를 위해, 죄의 용서와 유지에 관한 권한이 주어진 것을 모든 교부들은 언제나 믿고 인정하였다 (Council of Trent, "De Paenitentia", Chapter 1).”

 

The Sacrament of Penance is the most sublime _expression of God's love and mercy towards men, described so vividly in Jesus' parable of the prodigal son (cf. Luke 15:11-32).  The Lord always awaits us, with His arms wide open, waiting for us to repent--and then He will forgive us and restore us to the dignity of being His sons. The Popes have consistently recommended Christians to have regular recourse to this Sacrament: "For a constant and speedy advancement in the path of virtue we highly recommend the pious practice of frequent Confession, introduced by the Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit; for by this means we grow in a true knowledge of ourselves and in Christian humility, bad habits are uprooted, spiritual negligence and apathy are prevented, the conscience is purified and the will strengthened, salutary spiritual direction is obtained, and grace is increased by the efficacy of the Sacrament itself" ([Pope] Pius XII, "Mystici Corporis").

 

고해성사는, 예수님의 탕자의 비유에서 생생하게 기술된, 인간에 대한 하느님의 사랑과 자비의 가장 숭고한 표현이다 (루가 15.11-32 참조). 주님께서는 항상 우리를 기다리신다. 그의 팔을 넓게 펴고 우리가 회개하기를 기다리신다—그리고 그분은 우리를 용서하시고, 우리에게 그분의 자녀로서 합당한 존엄성을 회복해 주신다. 교황들은 그리스도인들이 정기적으로 이 성사의 도움을 받을 것을 지속적으로 권하였다: “믿음의 길에서 일관되고 빠른 전진을 이루기 위해서, 성령의 감도 아래 교회가 도입한, 고백을 자주 열성적으로 행할 것을 우리는 강력하게 권고합니다: 왜냐하면 이를 행함으로써 우리는 우리 자신에 대해서 진정으로 이해하고, 그리스도인의 겸손 안에서, 나쁜 버릇을 뿌리 뽑고, 영적인 태만과 무관심을 방지하고, 양심을 깨끗이 하고, 의지를 강하게 하고, 영적인 지향을 유익하게 하고, 성사 자체의 효능에 의해 은총이 증가하기 때문입니다 ([Pope] Pius XII, "Mystici Corporis").
