Good reporting
"When his fellow servants saw what had happened they were badly shaken, and went to their master to report the whole incident." —Matthew 18:31

충실한 보고
“동료들이 그렇게 벌어진 일을 보고 너무 안타까운 나머지, 주인에게 가서 그 일을 죄다 일렀다.” — 마태오 18,31

In yesterday's first reading, Naaman's servants intercede with him so that he obeys the prophet Elisha and is healed (2 Kgs 5:1-15). In today's Gospel, we see another role of servants: that of reporting to their master the sinful actions of their fellow servants.
어제의 제1독서에는 나아만이 예언자 엘리사의 말을 듣고 치유받을 수 있도록 나서서 중재 역할을 하는 나아만의 부하 이야기가 나옵니다 (2열왕 5,1-15). 오늘 복음에서 우리는 종이 가져야 할 또 다른 역할이 무엇인지 알 수 있습니다. 그것은 동료의 잘못된 점을 주인에게 알려주는 것입니다.

Sometimes just watching the nightly news on television can leave us "badly shaken." That is why Father Al Lauer, founder of Presentation Ministries, which publishes this booklet, encouraged people to "pray the news." "The fervent petition of a holy man is powerful indeed" (Jas 5:16).
텔레비전에 나오는 저녁 뉴스만 봐도 마음이 “몹시 안타까울” 때가 있습니다. 그래서 본 소책자를 발간하는 Presentation Ministries (본 번역물의 원본을 제작, 공급하는 단체)의 설립자이신 Al Lauer 신부님께서 사람들에게 “내일의 뉴스를 위해 기도하라”고 하신 것입니다. “의인의 간절한 기도는 큰 힘을 냅니다” (야고 5,16).

Newscasts can overwhelm us with evil happenings, but prayer gives us power over evil. Prayer works when all other efforts fail. Some demons "you can drive out only by prayer" (Mk 9:29). Prayer can even bring revival to a culture entrenched in sin and death. "If my people, upon whom My name has been pronounced, humble themselves and pray, and seek My presence and turn from their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven and pardon their sins and revive their land" (2 Chr 7:14).
악한 사건들 때문에 우리 마음이 심난해지기도 하지만 기도는 악을 넘어설 수 있는 힘을 우리에게 줍니다. 다른 모든 노력들이 소용 없을 때 기도가 그 힘을 발휘합니다. 어떤 악마들의 경우에는 “기도가 아니면 다른 어떤 방법으로도 나가게 할 수 없습니다” (마르 9,29) 기도는 죄와 죽음이 자리잡은 문화에도 새로운 부흥을 가져올 수 있습니다. “내 이름으로 불리는 내 백성이 자신들을 낮추고 기도하며 나를 찾고 악한 길에서 돌아서면, 내가 하늘에서 듣고 그들의 죄를 용서하며 그들의 땅을 회복시켜 주겠다.” (2역대 7,14)

"So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and favor and to find help in time of need" (Heb 4:16). The next time watching the news leaves you "badly shaken," do what those servants did. Report the whole incident to your Master (Mt 18:31). He is listening.

“그러므로 확신을 가지고 은총의 어좌로 나아갑시다. 그리하여 자비를 얻고 은총을 받아 필요할 때에 도움이 되게 합시다”(히브 4,16) 앞으로 어떤 뉴스를 보고 “마음이 몹시 안타깝다면” 앞서 나온 종들이 했던 행동을 하십시오. 그 일을 주인에게 죄다 알리십시오 (마태 18,31). 주님께서 듣고 계십니다.

intecede with 중재(조정)하다; 라틴어 intercedere에서. (inter- 사이에 ＋ cedere 가다 ＝사이를 통해 조정하다).

that: 대명사로 쓰인 that. 앞의 another role 을 가리킵니다.

reporting to their master the sinful actions of their fellow servants: report 의 목적어는 the sinful actions of their fellow servants. 목적어가 너무 길어서 뒤로 돌림, 대신 to their master 라는 부사구를 앞으로 돌려 이해를 돕고 있습니다.

leave us badly shaken: leave + 사람 + 과거분사/형용사 = "사람"이 ~한 상태가 되게 하다, ~한 상태로 그냥 놓아두다.

founder: 무관사임에 유의. 직함, 자격을 뜻하는 단어에는 관사를 붙이지 않습니다.

fervent   열심인, 열렬한, 열의 있는

overwhelm<남을> (정신적으로) 억누르다(crush); <수동태> <사람이> (격한 감정으로) 압도되다

entrenched in: (논설문, 컬럼 등에서 자주 쓰이는 매우 중요한 단어)

원래 entrench 라는 단어는  "참호를 파고 들어가다" 는 뜻. (예) Kim,

Jong-il entrenched himself in a dugout.(김정일은 대피호 속에 들어가 단단히 숨었다.)  전용된 의미로, "(입장, 개념, 권리 등이) 확립되다, 굳어지다". (예) The concept

of freedom and individual rights is entrenched in our Constitution. 자유와 권리라는 개념은 우리 헌법에 확립돼 있다. (주의) 본문의 entrenched in  대신에 culture

entrenched BY sin and death 라고 하는 것이 보통. 하지만 전치사 by 대신 in 을 씀으로써, 죄와 죽음 속에 아예 우리 문화가 푹 빠져 있을 정도로 확고하게 굳어졌다는 뉘앙스를 전하고 있습니다.
