Why did Matthew include this story in his gospel? Simply to present an historical record of events leading to Jesus' death? Simply to emphasize how stern he could be in criticizing his enemies? Or is there something else going on? Consider what occurs. Jesus tells a story. His audience, completely rapt, enthusiastically answers his question about what the owner would do (Matthew 21:41). And yet, engaged as his hearers were, Jesus' conclusion still stunned them: "Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you"(21:43).
So what does this have to do with us, now, as we prepare for Easter? When God speaks, friend and foe alike hear him. He doesn't obscure his message, even when we may not want to hear what he has to say. Sometimes, as in today's Gospel reading, he wants to challenge our hearts and minds in the hopes of shaking up the way we live. And that's not typically something we find easy to swallow.
Whenever the Holy Spirit speaks to uswhether it be in prayer, through Scripture, at Mass, or through events in our liveswe need to embrace his word, even if it's uncomfortable or challenging. Remember: Jesus is out for our welfare. His words aren't meant to condemn or demean us. They are meant to build us up and prompt us to change. Even if he must speak sharp words to us, he always leaves us room to repent and to be transformed. He is always with us to help us and to empower us. All he asks is that we have ears to hear.
Brothers and sisters, we are the people to whom the kingdom of God has been given. We are the ones called to produce it is fruit. We can choose to respond with anger, indifference, and resistance. Or we can accept his words and ask him to help us. God loves us all dearly! His plans, his words for us, always offer us life, healing, and hope. So listen today with an open heart. Know that you can always trust his gentleness, his mercy, and his love.

그러면 이 이야기가 부활을 준비하는 지금의 우리와는 무슨 상관이 있을까요? 하느님께서 말씀하실 때는 친구들, 적대자들 할 것 없이 모두 그분의 말씀을 듣습니다. 주님께서는, 우리가 당신의 말씀을 듣고 싶어하지 않을 때에도 전하고자 하는 메시지를 숨기지 않으십니다. 때로는 오늘의 복음 말씀에서처럼, 우리의 생활 양식을 각성시키고자 하는 바람으로 우리의 마음과 정신에 도전하십니다. 그리고 그 도전은 보통 우리가 쉽게 받아들일 수 있는 어떤 것이 아닙니다.
성령께서 기도 중에, 성경을 통하여, 미사 때, 또는 일상의 사건들을 통하여 우리에게 말씀하실 때면 언제나 우리는 그 말씀을 받아들여야 합니다. 그것이 나에게 거북하고 힘든 것일지라도 말입니다. 예수님께서는 우리의 행복을 바라신다는 것을 기억하세요. 그분의 말씀은 우리를 비난하거나 단죄하려는 것이 아니라, 우리를 일으켜 세우고 변화를 재촉하기 위한 것입니다. 주님께서는 우리에게 좀 심한 말씀을 해야 할 때에도 항상 뉘우치고 변화할 수 있는 여지를 주십니다. 그분께서는 우리의 힘이 되고 우리를 강건하게 하시려 늘 우리 곁에 계십니다. 그분이 우리에게 바라시는 것은 오직 귀를 열고 그분의 말씀을 들으라는 것입니다.
형제자매 여러분, 우리는 하느님 나라의 상속자들입니다. 주님 나라의 열매를 맺도록 부름 받은 사람들이고요. 우리는 이 부르심에 노여움과 무관심, 저항으로 응답할 수 있습니다. 그런가 하면, 그 말씀을 진지하게 받아들이고 그분의 도우심을 청할 수도 있습니다. 하느님께서는 우리를 극진히 사랑하십니다! 그분의 계획과 말씀은 늘 우리에게 생명과 치유와 희망을 약속합니다. 그러니 오늘 열린 마음으로 귀 기울이세요. 언제라도 그분의 친절하심과 자비, 그리고 사랑에 의지할 수 있음을 기억하세요.
“주님, 오늘 저에게 하시는 말씀을
귀담아 듣겠습니다.
비록 그 말씀이 저를 뒤흔들고
제게 도전할지라도 그렇게 하겠습니다.
저는 주님의 자비와 사랑을 굳게 믿으면서
주님의 말씀을 받아들여
