Dr. Ramsey MacMullen, professor of classics at Yale University, wrote a book entitled Christianizing the Roman Empire: a.d. 100-400. The book describes how the early Christians genuinely wanted to be Christ's disciples and heroically spread the gospel throughout the Roman Empire, at the risk of being maligned, persecuted, and even put to death.
For these early believers, the gospel entailed a clear choice between being set free by Jesus or being bound by sin. What is amazing is that they chose Jesus because they had experienced his love. They knew how much Jesus loved them personally, and they loved Jesus in return.
St. Luke tells us that the people who came to hear Jesus' words came also to be healed and delivered from evil spirits. And they were healed and delivered because of the power that came from Jesus. Divine power, sustained by unconditional love, simply flowed from Jesus and brought healing to all who came to him.
We might come to Jesus because his words are true. However, it is far more likely that we will come to him and embrace his teachings when we experience his love and his power to heal us and help us. When we have a sense of the presence of God, its power moves us toward him like a giant magnet. And as we are drawn to Jesus, we experience his forgiveness, mercy, and love.
So when you receive Communion today, look up to Jesus and say, "Lord, show me your power and your love. Give me the same experience you gave to those who heard you preach long ago." Jesus won't let you down. You will experience a great joy in your heart as the love of God is poured upon you.
But it doesn't end there. The early Christians "gave" Jesus to the Roman Empire. Similarly, each of us should be sure both to receive Jesus and to give him to our family and friends. It may involve embarrassment, a negative comment, or a even a taste of the rejection the first Christians experienced. But it will be well worth it.

"Dear Lord, come, feed me
and I will tell others of your love."

예일 대학의 고전학 교수인 램지 맥뮬런 박사는 「로마 제국의 그리스도교화: 기원후 100-400년 」이라는 저서에서 초대 교회 신자들이 얼마나 순수한 열정으로 그리스도의 제자로 살기를 갈망하였으며, 온갖 중상과 박해를 무릅쓰고, 심지어는 처형을 당하면서까지 로마 제국 전역에 복음을 전파하였는지 기술하고 있습니다.
초대 교회 신자들에게 복음은 예수님에 의한 해방과 죄로 인한 속박 사이의 확실한 선택을 의미했습니다. 놀라운 것은 그들이 예수님의 사랑을 체험했고 그 때문에 그분을 선택했다는 것입니다. 그들은 예수님께서 그들 한 사람 한 사람을 얼마나 사랑하셨는지 깨달았고 그래서 그 보답으로 주님께 자신들의 사랑을 바쳤습니다.
루카 복음사가는 예수님의 말씀을 들으러 온 사람들이 질병도 고치고 더러운 영들에게서 해방되었다고 말합니다. 그들이 치유를 받고 악령에서 해방된 것은 예수님에게서 나오는 힘 때문이었습니다. 조건 없는 사랑의 힘으로 고양된 하느님의 권능이 예수님에게서 흘러나와 그분에게 다가온 사람들을 고쳐 주었던 것입니다.
그분의 말씀이 참되기에 우리가 예수님께 나아가는지도 모릅니다. 그렇지만 우리가 우리를 고쳐주고 도와주시는 주님의 사랑과 권능을 체험한다면, 틀림없이 그분께 더욱 더 가까이 다가가 그분의 가르침을 받으려 할 것입니다. 우리가 하느님의 현존을 느낄 때, 그 힘은 마치 강력한 자석처럼 우리를 그분에게로 끌어당깁니다. 그래서 예수님에게 이끌려진 우리는 용서와 자비와 사랑을 체험합니다.
오늘 성체를 모실 때 예수님을 올려다보며 이렇게 말씀드리세요. “주님, 저에게 당신의 능력과 사랑을 보여 주세요. 오래전 주님의 말씀을 들으러 온 사람들이 체험한 것을 저도 느끼게 해 주세요.” 예수님은 당신을 실망시킬 분이 아니십니다. 하느님의 사랑이 당신에게 쏟아져 내릴 때 당신은 가슴속에서 커다란 희열을 느낄 것입니다. 
그런데 그게 끝이 아니지요. 초대 교회 신자들이 예수님을 로마 제국에 ‘선물’했듯이, 우리 각자도 반드시 예수님을 영접하여 가족과 친구들에게 전해야 합니다. 여기엔 온갖 방해와 부정적인 비판이 따를 수도 있고 초대 교회 신자들이 겪어야 했던 거센 반발조차 감수해야 할지 모르지만, 그건 매우 그럴 만한 가치가 있는 일입니다.

“사랑하는 주님, 오시어 저에게 힘을 주십시오.
사람들에게 주님의 사랑을 전하겠습니다.”
