One of the great milestones of human history was man's first voyage to the moon. As the astronauts of Apollo 8 approached their destination, people all over the world watched in awe, wondering what they would say about this awesome experience. In fact, the first words from astronaut William Anders were from today's reading: "In the beginning, God made the heavens and the earth"(Genesis 1:1).
Seeing the earth from the vastness of space, the astronauts couldn't help but acknowledge God. If we think for a moment about the wonder of our world, we too will be drawn to thank him. What are we to make of the intricate design of living things, from our own bodies, right down to the tiniest microbe? Evidence tells us that life is the result of evolutionary processes lasting millions of years, but faith tells us that it is no accident.
No matter where we turn, the complexity and splendor of our world tells us that we have a creator. If that is so, then our lives belong to God. We do not exist for ourselves alone, but to give him glory and to be in a deep, personal relationship with him. That should be wonderful news for us! Without the Lord's presence, life seems random and meaninglesslike the teeming chaos before creation. But when we are in communion with him, he brings order and peace to our lives. We begin to see that we are not an accident. We are part of a grand design that is far bigger than we can conceive.
As you reflect on this reading, spend some time simply praising the Lord for the beauty and glory of his creation. With a God so involved in the world, trust that he has you in the palm of his hand. Nothing that can happen todaynot even the most "random" eventescapes his loving gaze. And that means that you can cast your cares upon him and know his compassion and his presence. Imagine: The Creator of the universe is your Father; he is always with you!

우주 비행사들은 광대한 우주공간에서 지구를 바라보며 신의 존재를 인정하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 우리가 살고 있는 이 지구의 경이로움을 한 순간만이라도 생각한다면, 우리도 역시 하느님께 감사드리게 될 것입니다. 우리 자신의 몸에서 시작하여 아주 작은 미생물에 이르기까지 생물체들의 복잡미묘함을 보고 우리는 어떤 생각이 듭니까? 눈에 보이는 증거는 생명이란 수백만 년 동안 지속된 진화의 결과라고 말하지만, 신앙은 그것이 우연의 산물이 아니라고 말합니다.
우리가 어느 쪽을 믿든, 우주 만물의 복잡미묘함과 황홀함은 창조주의 존재를 말해 줍니다. 만일 그렇다면, 우리의 생명은 하느님께 속하게 됩니다. 우리는 오직 자신만을 위해 존재하는 게 아니라, 창조주께 영광을 드리고 그분과 깊은 인격적 관계를 맺기 위해 존재합니다. 이 얼마나 굉장한 소식입니까! 하느님께서 계시지 않는다면, 생명은 창조 이전의 대혼돈처럼 무질서하고 무의미하게 보일 테니까요. 우리가 주님과 친교 안에 머물 때, 그분께서는 우리 삶에 질서와 평화를 가져다 주시고, 우리는 우리의 존재가 그저 우연이 아님을 깨닫기 시작합니다. 우리는 우리의 상상을 훨씬 뛰어넘는 원대한 계획의 일부입니다.
오늘의 독서를 묵상하며, 주님께 창조의 아름다움과 영광을 찬미 드리는 시간을 가지세요. 하느님께서 이 세상에 그토록 깊이 개입해 계시니, 그분이 두 손으로 당신을 감싸고 계심을 믿으세요. 오늘 일어나는 일은 무엇이든, 그것이 아무리 ‘우연히’ 일어나는 일이라 해도 그분의 애정 어린 눈길을 벗어날 수 없습니다. 그것은 당신의 걱정을 그분께 맡기고 그분의 연민과 현존을 체험할 수 있다는 뜻입니다. 상상해 보세요. 우주를 만드신 분이 당신의 아버지라는 사실을, 그리고 그분께서 늘 당신과 함께 계신다는 사실을 … !
