"Their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together."(Genesis 13:6)
What a sad commentary! It's ironic that the Old Testament considered wealth a sign of God's blessing on a virtuous person. If someone was very rich, God must be rewarding him for his piety. Yet God's friend Abram had the spiritual insight to see that his wealth was actually posing an obstacle to something much more essential: his good relationship with his nephew, Lot. Jealousy and competition were making it impossible for their herdsmen to coexist peacefully.
Seeing that the two needed to separate, Abram humbly invited Lot to choose his preferred section of the land. Abram promised to be content with whatever was left over. In another irony, those "leftovers" became the Promised Land inherited by Abram's many descendants, while the fertile land Lot chose was soon decimated by fire and brimstone because of its wickedness.
What "possessions" make it impossible for me to live in peace? Is my home so full of fragile antiques that I never invite the grandchildren over? Is my carpet so impeccable that I cringe if a guest forgets to remove his shoes? Is my kitchen so orderly that I turn down every offer to help prepare food? Am I resentful at the lack of closet space or room on my bookshelves?
Or perhaps it's my schedule and priorities that make it difficult for others to squeeze into my life. I don't have time (just now) to help you out of a predicament. I don't enjoy shopping, or roller skating, or classical music, so I'd rather not share these experiences with you, no matter how much you enjoy them.
It may even be my spirituality that impedes my reaching out to love others. I'm annoyed when someone wanders into Mass, perhaps a mother trying to soothe a wailing baby or a street person who obviously has no sense of decorum. I have so much material to cover in the catechism class I'm teaching that there isn't time for a pressing question that's off-topic.
What possession or attitude do I need to set aside in order to pass through the "narrow gate" that leads to the kingdom (Matthew 7:13-14)?
"Jesus, you have blessed me
in so many ways! Fill my heart
with your love, and give me the courage
to set aside whatever impedes me
from sharing life with the people
you love so much."
