Paul was a gifted preacher and a brilliant teacher, a zealous apostle who loved Jesus so passionately that he was willing to dedicate all his energiesindeed, his whole lifeto the service of the gospel. He could also consider himself to be specially blessed by the Lord, because he had been given the privilege of being shown heavenly mysteries beyond deion (2 Corinthians 12:4). Even so, he didn't let all this go to his head. Instead of becoming filled with self-import!ance, he strove for humility, because he recognized some very import!ant truths about his relationship to God.
Paul knew that he was constantly dependent on God's mercy and favor. And he firmly believed that God's grace was sufficient for him, because he experienced the way that God's power is unleashed and perfected when it encounters human limitations (2 Corinthians 12:9). Consequently, Paul could be content with trials, persecutions, and even physical infirmities, for he knew that, "when I am weak, then I am strong"(12:10).
If we take a good look at ourselves, we may find our attitude to be different. Our human tendency is to say, "I did it my way," and the world only serves to reinforce that message. All our lives, we are told that success depends on us, and so we unconsciously measure our worth by what we have accomplished. But Paul's life demonstrates exactly the opposite! He could honestly say that nothing he had done mattered, except what he had done through Christ.
How can we take Paul's words to heart? A good place to start is at Mass. When we receive Jesus in communion, we come face to face with him. It's there we can confess that all the gifts and talents we have, and all the goodness in our hearts, flow only from his love and power. What do we have that we weren't given freely by a generous, merciful Father (1 Corinthians 4:7)? The more we embrace this reality, the more we'll grow in his love. So when you go to Mass tomorrow, keep this one statement of faith uppermost on your heart: " It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me!" (Galatians 2:20).
"Thank you, Jesus,
for all that you have given me.
Help me to give it all back to you
in praise, gratitude, and loving service!"
