Consider an elderly gentleman facing risky surgery, terrified of what might happen if he didn't survive the procedure. He has practiced his faith and prayed faithfully his whole life, and yet he still couldn't believe that Jesus would welcome him home. Wouldn't you want to encourage this man with the good news of God's mercy? What about those who have distanced themselves from God and indulged in sin and rebellion? Could there be mercy for them? Should they dare to trust after living such a self-destructive life? Absolutely!
Today we celebrate Jesus' loving kindness. On this day, one week after Eater, we are reminded why Jesus rose from the dead: to shower the world with divine mercy. Now, unless we outright reject his mercy, it can never be denied us.
As Peter walked through the streets of Jerusalem, many people brought their sick friends and relatives to him "in order that Peter's shadow might fall on some of them.… And they were all cured"(Acts 5:15,16). It was such a simple acttaking a friend to the side of the roadbut it resulted in amazing miracles. Jesus didn't wait for them to drum up a heroic amount of faith. All he wanted was for them to take one small step toward him, and he came running to them.
This is the message that God gave St. Faustina. "The graces of mercy," Jesus once told her, "are drawn by means of one vessel only, and that is trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive." Or to put it another way: Everyone who trusts receives!
Why wait for an emergency? God has so much in store. Go to him today and open up the deepest part of who you are. Then you will drink of the vast river of Christ's mercy. If we all kept Divine Mercy Sunday this way, the whole world would change!

is beyond words.
For the sake of your sorrowful passion,
have mercy on us and on the whole world."

위험한 수술을 앞둔 한 노인이 혹시나 수술 과정을 이겨내지 못하면 어쩌나 하고 겁에 질려 있는 모습을 상상해 보세요. 그는 일평생 열심히 신앙생활을 하였고 기도생활에 충실하였지만, 예수님께서 자신을 기꺼이 맞아주실지 확신할 수 없습니다. 이 노인에게 하느님 자비의 기쁜 소식을 전하고 힘을 북돋아 주고 싶지 않으세요? 하느님에게서 멀리 떨어져 죄와 반항의 늪에서 허우적거리는 영혼들은 어떻습니까? 그들도 하느님의 자비를 입을 수 있을까요? 그토록 자기파괴적인 삶을 살아온 그들이 감히 하느님의 자비를 바랄 수 있을까요? 물론입니다!
오늘 우리는 사랑에 넘치는 예수님의 자비를 기념합니다. 부활 일주일 뒤인 오늘, 우리는 예수님께서 왜 죽음에서 부활하셨는지 곰곰이 생각해 보게 됩니다. 그것은 이 세상에 하느님의 자비를 아낌없이 내려주시기 위함이었습니다. 우리가 하느님의 자비를 거부하지만 않는다면, 이제 그분의 자비는 우리 곁을 떠나는 일이 없을 것입니다.
베드로가 예루살렘 거리를 지나갈 때, 많은 이들이 병든 친지들과 가족들을 데리고 나와 “베드로의 그림자만이라도 그들 누구에겐가 드리워지기를 바랐습니다. … 그들도 모두 병이 나았습니다.”(사도 5,15-16) 친구를 길가로 데리고 나오기는 대수롭지 않은 일이지만 그것이 놀라운 기적을 불러왔습니다. 예수님께서는 그들이 굉장한 믿음을 발휘하기를 기대하신 것이 아닙니다. 그분이 원하신 건 오직 그들이 당신을 향해 한 발짝 내딛는 것이었고, 주님께서는 그들을 향해 달려오셨습니다.
이것이 하느님께서 파우스티나 성녀에게 주신 메시지입니다. 어느 날 예수님께서 성녀에게 말씀하셨지요. “자비의 은총을 길어 올리는 두레박은 단 하나, 그것은 신뢰이다. 신뢰하면 할수록 더 많은 은총을 받을 것이다.” 다시 말해서, 믿는 자는 누구나 받을 것이라는 말씀이지요!
왜 다급해질 때까지 기다립니까? 하느님께서는 잔뜩 비축해 두고 계십니다. 오늘 주님께 나아가 당신의 깊고 깊은 속내를 보여드리세요. 그러면 그리스도의 자비라는 광대무변한 강물을 마시게 될 것입니다. 우리 모두가 하느님의 자비 주일을 이렇게 보낸다면 온 세상이 변하지 않겠습니까!
“주 예수님, 당신 사랑의 힘은 말로 다
표현할 수 없습니다.
비탄에 잠긴 예수님의 수난을 보시고,
저희와 온 세상에 자비를 베풀어 주십시오.”
