Talk about idealism! Here is the author of Hebrews telling his readers that they have already come "to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven"(Hebrews 12:22-23). Was he being serious? Or was he just using some ancient literary form of exaggeration to give his writing a dramatic effect?
It's possible that there is some exaggeration going on in this passagebut not much. After all, the Fathers of Vatican II wrote something very similar in 1963. In their Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, they said that the Mass gives us "a foretaste of that heavenly liturgy which is celebrated in the holy city of Jerusalem … where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God"(Sacrosanctum Concilium, 8). So it must be true: Even now, on this earth, we can touch heavenand we do so most powerfully when we gather to worship the Lord together.
Amazing, isn't it? We can put aside our cares, worries, and concerns right now and enter throne room of heaven. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus has opened the doors, and we are free to come into his presence. Jesus, our great high priest, has made a new covenant with us, and he now welcomes us with open arms.
So why hesitate? Come, enter into your true home. Come to the altar and worship Jesus in union with Mary, the Mother of God, with the martyrs, the saints, and the myriads of angels who surround the throne of the Almighty. Come, enter into an intimate relationship with your Creator and your Redeemer. He is waiting for you. He longs to feed you, to teach you, and to reveal himself to you. Come and touch the splendor of God's glory and experience your own heaven on earth!

into your home and call yourself

Together with all my brothers and sisters,
I accept your invitation and bow down

이상향에 관해 이야기해 봅시다! 히브리서 저자는 독자들에게 이렇게 말하고 있군요. “그러나 여러분이 나아간 곳은 시온 산이고 살아 계신 하느님의 도성이며 천상 예루살렘으로, 무수한 천사들의 축제 집회와 하늘에 등록된 맏아들들의 모임이 이루어지는 곳입니다. 또 모든 사람의 심판자 하느님께서 계시고, 완전하게 된 의인들의 영이 있습니다.”(히브 12,22-23) 진담일까요? 아니면 단지 글의 극적 효과를 노려 고대문학의 과장법을 사용한 것일까요?
이 구절에는 다소 과장된 부분이 있겠으나, 그리 심한 것은 아닙니다. 제2차 바티칸 공의회 교부들도 1963년에 이와 비슷한 글을 썼으니까요. “우리가 걸어 나아가는 거룩한 도성 예루살렘에서 거행되는 천상 전례를 미리 맛본다. 그 곳에서는 그리스도께서 … 하느님의 오른편에 앉아 계신다.”(전례 헌장, 8항) 그러니 맞는 말임에 틀림없습니다. 우리는 이 세상에서, 아니 지금 당장이라도 천국을 접할 수 있으며, 주님을 예배하러 다함께 모일 때 가장 생생하게 이를 체험하는 것입니다.
정말 놀랍지 않나요? 일상의 모든 근심걱정, 그리고 온갖 잡다한 일들을 제쳐두고 지금 당장 천국의 옥좌가 있는 방으로 들어갈 수 있으니 말입니다. 예수님께서 당신의 죽음과 부활로써 우리에게 천국 문을 열어 주셨으니, 우리는 자유롭게 그분께 나아갈 수 있습니다. 우리의 대사제이신 예수님께서 우리와 새 계약을 맺으시고 지금 두 팔을 벌려 우리를 환영해 주십니다.
그렇다면 왜 머뭇거리나요? 와서, 당신의 참 안식처에 드세요. 제단에 나와 하느님의 어머니 동정 마리아와 모든 순교자, 성인, 그리고 전지전능하신 하느님의 어좌를 둘러싸고 있는 무수한 천사들과 함께 예수님을 경배하세요. 와서, 당신의 창조주, 당신의 구세주와 친밀한 관계를 맺으세요. 그분이 당신을 기다리고 계십니다. 그분께서는 당신을 기르시고, 당신에게 가르침을 주시고, 당신에게 자신을 드러내 보여 주고자 하십니다. 와서 하느님 영광의 광채를 느끼고, 이 세상에서 당신의 천국을 맛보세요.
