"Where did this man get all this?"(Mark 6:2)
Isn't it strange how Jesus' wordsthe words of the all-holy, eternal Son of Godcan become so familiar to us that we take them for granted? We hear them every time we go to Mass; we read them every time you open the New Testament. But just imagine what it must have been like to hear him for the first time: to listen as he taught the parable of the Prodigal Son, or debated the law with the Pharisees. It must have been astounding! After listening to him, you too might wonder, "Where did this man get all this?"
If you know your Bible, you don't have to ask where Jesus' wisdom came from. You know he received everything from the Father (John 5:18-23), and that the Holy Spirit was speaking through him. The answer is almost obvious. But did you know that people could ask the same question about you? Did you know that others could be amazed at your wisdom and conviction?
Of course, it's not really your eloquence that will impress people. They won't listen to you primarily because of your persuasive speech or your knowledge of ure and theology. They will listen because they can sense you are in touch with the Holy Spirit. When you speak and act out of a life submitted to God, your words will have the authority that comes from divine wisdom, not the wisdom of this world.
Look at the example of the apostles. After he spoke in the synagogue, Jesus sent them out (Mark 6:7). He gave them power to speak in his name and to work miracles. And, as untrained as they were, these men were effective! Well, Jesus has given you the same power. Don't underestimate what God can do through you! Listen for him to speak to you in prayer and ask for his grace. Then, look for opportunities to give away what you've received from him. You never know where you'll be needed; it may be in the check out line at the grocery store, in conversation with a co-worker, or on the train to work. Wherever you are, as you remain open to him, you will make a difference in this world!

“저 사람이 어디서 저 모든 것을 얻었을까?”(마르 6,2)
예수님의 말씀이, 그토록 거룩하시며 하느님의 영원한 아드님이신 분의 말씀이, 우리가 당연하게 여길 정도로 우리 귀에 익숙하게 되었다니 참 이상하지 않나요? 우리는 그 말씀을 미사에 갈 때마다 듣고, 신약을 펼칠 때마다 읽습니다. 하지만 그분의 말씀을 처음으로 듣는다면 어땠을까요? 그분께서 ‘되 찾은 아들’의 비유를 가르치는 것이나 바리사이와 율법을 토론하는 것을 듣는다고 생각해 보십시오. 분명히 놀라웠을 것입니다! 그분의 말씀을 듣고 나서 당신도 역시 이렇게 의아해했을 것입니다. “저 사람이 어디서 저 모든 것을 얻었을까?”
당신이 성경을 잘 안다면, 예수님의 지혜가 어디서 왔는지 묻지 않아도 될 테지요. 당신은 그분이 모든 것을 하늘에 계신 아버지께로부터 받으셨다(요한 5,18-23)는 것과 성령께서 그분을 통하여 말씀하신다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 답은 거의 확실하군요. 그런데 사람들이 당신을 두고서도 이와 똑같은 질문을 할 수 있다는 것을 당신은 알고 있나요? 다른 이들이 당신의 지혜와 확신을 보고 깜짝 놀랄 수 있다는 사실을 알고 있나요?
물론 사람들을 놀라게 하는 것은 정말이지 당신의 말솜씨가 아닙니다. 사람들이 당신의 말을 듣는 가장 큰 이유는, 당신이 설득력 있게 말하거나 성경과 신학을 잘 알고 있어서가 아닙니다. 그들이 당신의 말을 들으려는 것은 당신이 성령의 능력을 지니고 있다고 느끼기 때문입니다. 당신의 말과 행동이 하느님께 순종하는 삶에서 나온다면, 당신의 말은 이 세상의 지혜가 아닌, 하느님의 지혜에서 나온 권위를 가질 것입니다.
제자들의 예를 보십시오. 예수님께서는 회당에서 말씀을 하신 후 제자들을 파견하셨습니다.(마르 6,7) 주님께서는 그들에게 당신의 이름으로 설교하고 기적을 일으킬 능력을 주셨습니다. 그러자, 아무것도 배우지 않은 제자들이었지만, 그들은 그렇게 할 수 있었습니다! 그렇습니다. 예수님께서는 당신에게도 그와 같은 능력을 주셨습니다. 하느님께서 당신을 통하여 하실 수 있는 일을 과소평가하지 마십시오. 기도할 때 주님께서 하시는 말씀을 잘 듣고 그분의 은총을 구하십시오. 그러고 나서, 당신이 주님에게서 받은 것을 다시 베풀 수 있는 기회를 찾으십시오. 당신이 어디에서 도움이 될지 당신은 결코 알 수 없습니다. 식품 가게의 계산대에 줄 서 있을 때일 수도 있고, 동료와 이야기를 나눌 때일 수도 있고, 출근길 지하철 안일 수도 있지요. 당신이 어디에 있든지 주님께 마음을 열고 있다면, 당신은 이 세상에 변화를 가져올 것입니다!
