“He… called… and they came to him."(Mark 3:13)
Free will: It's a wonderful gift with that comes with a tremendous responsibility. We can choose to love God, but we can also choose to turn away from him or to delay our response. Each day we are called to make choices, big or small, all of which affect the path our lives will take. When Jesus called his disciples, they chose to come to him and follow him. Did you ever think what would have happened if they had chosen otherwise?
Today in many parts of the world, especially South America, the church celebrates the feast of Saint Expedito. A martyr of the early church, he is known as the patron saint of those seeking rapid answers to prayer. He is often depicted as a Roman soldier who is gazing at a cross while trampling a black crow underfoot. We know little else about his life, but as the story goes, Expedito had heard about Jesus and was thinking of being baptized and becoming a Christian. A crow crossed his path, saying to him "tomorrow" - implying that he could put off until tomorrow his decision to convert. But Expedito decisively crushed the crow underfoot and embraced Christianity that very day.
What about us? Today, Jesus will call us. Today, the Holy Spirit will prompt us in one way or another. What will we choose to do? Will we hesitate to speak about our faith to a struggling neighbor or co-worker? Will we wait another day before we seek reconciliation with someone we have wronged, or before we go to Confession? Will we put off joining that Bible study or ministry we feel called to, or hit the snooze button and sleep through our prayer time again?
Let's be like the apostles who went to Jesus as soon as he called them. Let's be like Saint Expedito, refusing to wait another day to follow Christ. Let's not miss any opportunity to choose Jesus today, in ordinary or in extraordinary ways. When others see our example, they too will want to run to Jesus; they'll see that "now is the acceptable time … now is the day of salvation!"(2 Corinthians 6:2)

“예수님께서 … 가까이 부르시니 그들이 그분께 나아왔다.”(마르 3,13)
자유의지, 이는 엄청난 책임이 따르는 고귀한 선물입니다. 우리는 하느님을 사랑하기로 선택할 수 있지만, 그분을 외면하고 그분께 대한 응답을 늦추기로 맘먹을 수도 있습니다. 우리는 날마다 크고 작은 선택을 해야 하고, 그 선택 하나하나가 우리가 살아가는 인생 여정에 영향을 줍니다. 제자들은 예수님의 부르심을 받자 그분께 나아가 그분을 따르기로 결심했습니다. 그들이 다른 길을 선택했더라면 어떤 일이 일어났을지 당신은 생각해 본 적이 있는지요?
오늘날 세계 여러 곳, 특히 남미 교회에서는 성 엑스페디토 축일을 경축합니다. 초대교회의 순교자인 그 성인은 자신의 기도에 빠른 응답을 바라는 이들의 주보성인으로 알려진 분이지요. 그분의 성화는 대개 검은 까마귀를 밟고 십자가를 바라보고 있는 로마 군인의 모습으로 그려집니다. 성인의 생애에 관해서는 별로 알려진 바가 없지만, 전해 오는 이야기에 따르면, 예수님에 관한 말씀을 들은 엑스페디토가 세례를 받고 그리스도인이 되려는 생각을 하고 있을 때, 어디선가 까마귀 한 마리가 날아와 ‘내일’이라고 지저귀며 그의 앞을 지나갔습니다. 곧 회심을 내일로 미룰 수 있다는 뜻이지요. 그 순간 그는 단숨에 까마귀를 짓밟아 버리고, 그날로 바로 입교하였다고 합니다.  
우리는 어떤가요? 바로 오늘 예수님께서 우리를 부르실 것입니다. 오늘 성령께서 이런저런 방법으로 우리를 재촉하실 것입니다. 무엇을 선택하겠습니까? 고생하는 이웃이나 직장 동료에게 신앙을 전하는 일을 주저하렵니까? 잘못을 저지른 이에게 화해를 청하는 일을, 혹은 고해하러 가는 일을 내일로 미루렵니까? 주님께서 그리로 부르신다고 느끼면서도 성경공부 모임이나 다른 활동에 참여하는 일을 다음 기회로 미루렵니까? 기도시간을 알리는 알람을 꺼버리고 다시 잠을 청하렵니까?
우리도 예수님께서 부르시자 곧 나아간 사도들처럼 행동합시다. 엑스페디토 성인처럼, 그리스도를 따르는 일을 내일로 미루지 맙시다. 오늘 평범한 방법이든 색다른 방법이든 예수님을 선택할 기회를 놓치지 맙시다. 사람들이 우리의 모범을 보고서, 그들도 역시 예수님께 달려가고 싶어할 테니까요. 지금이 “은혜로운 때”이고 지금이 “구원의 날”(2코린 6,2)임을 그들도 알게 될 테니까요.

“하느님 아버지, 당신을 따르는 길에서
한 순간도 헛되이 살지 않도록
저를 도와주십시오! 아주 많은 순간,
저는 주저합니다. 하지만 주님의 은총이
제 안에 흘러들어와 저를 통해
주님께서 사랑하는 이들에게 흘러들어가는
기회를 하나도 놓치고 싶지 않습니다.”
