When the Jewish believers heard that Gentiles had accepted the word of God, their first reaction was to criticize Peter for going to the uncircumcised. Yet the initial, guarded reserve of the Jews was not due to a prideful protectiveness of their "specialness" as God's chosen people. It reflected their sincere desire to obey God and to do his will. Thus, once Peter explained to them how the Holy Spirit had fallen on the members of Cornelius' household, the Jewish Christians praised God, saying, "God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life"(Acts 11:18).
Just as Gentiles and Jews in the early church had to learn how to get along with one another and work together to advance the kingdom, we have a similar challenge today when we look out at the landscape of a divided Christianity. Although Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox all profess the same belief in Jesus as Savior and Lord, we disagree in many other areas of faith, theology, and church practice. And even within our own church there exist deep divisions that break the Father's heart.
Can we dare to ask God to use us as instruments of unity among his people? Rather than arguing over differences, can we focus on the things that unite us as followers of Jesus? Can we place love and mutual respect above all else? As Pope Benedict XVI recently said, it is "through brotherly communion between Christians and through their mutual love that the message of God's love for each and every man and woman will become credible."
We should all look forward to the day when God will bring all Christians closer together. And in the meantime, we should all cooperate with our fellow believers wherever and whenever we can to strengthen the Christian people and to proclaim God's word to the world. Who knows what God will do? We have only to recall how the Spirit broke out at Cornelius' house in power to realize that the same can happen today!

"Father,
on the eve of his passion and death,
your Son prayed that all may be one,
so that the world may believe (John 17:21).
We make his prayer our own:
Father, make us one! Unite all Christians
so that, through our witness,
many others may come to know you
and your Son, Jesus."

다른 민족들도 하느님의 말씀을 받아들였다는 말을 듣고서 유다 지방의 형제들이 보인 첫 반응은 베드로가 할례 받지 않은 자들에게 간다는 비판이었습니다. 그러나 처음에 그들이 이렇듯 조심스럽게 제한을 둔 것은, 하느님의 선민이라는 자신들만의 ‘특별함’을 자부심을 가지고 수호하려는 생각 때문이라기보다는, 하느님께 순종하고 그분의 뜻을 수행하고자 하는 진지한 열망에서였습니다. 그렇기에 베드로가 코르넬리우스의 집안에 성령께서 내리신 경위를 설명하자, 유다계 그리스도인들은 “이제 하느님께서는 다른 민족들에게도 생명에 이르는 회개의 길을 열어 주셨다.” 하며 하느님을 찬양하였지요.(사도 11,18)
초대교회 시절에 이교도들과 유다인들이 하늘 나라를 앞당기기 위해 서로 화목하고 협력하는 법을 배워야 했던 것처럼, 우리도 오늘날 분열된 그리스도교의 모습 앞에서 같은 문제에 봉착해 있습니다. 가톨릭과 개신교, 그리고 정교회가 구세주요 주님이신 예수님께 똑같은 신앙을 고백하면서도, 교의와  신학, 교회예식 등 여러 분야에서 의견을 달리합니다. 심지어는 가톨릭교회 내에서조차 성부의 마음을 아프게 해 드리는 심각한 분열이 존재하고 있습니다.
주님께 우리를 하느님 백성들 간 일치의 도구로 써 주십사고 감히 청할 수는 없을까요? 교파 간 차이점들을 두고 논쟁하기보다 예수님을 따르는 이들로서 우리를 하나로 묶어주는 점들에 초점을 맞출 수는 없을까요? 사랑과 상호존중을 다른 무엇보다 우선시할 수는 없을까요? 최근 교황 베네딕토 16세께서 말씀하셨듯이, “인간 개개인에게 빠짐없이 주시는 하느님 사랑의 메시지는 그리스도인들 간의 형제적 친교와 서로에 대한 사랑을 통해 확실해질 것입니다.”
우리는 하느님께서 모든 그리스도인들이 하나가 되게 해 주실 날을 기다려야 합니다. 그리고 그날을 기다리는 동안, 우리는 언제 어디서나 동료 신앙인들과 더불어 그리스도인들을 강건하게 하고 하느님의 말씀을 세상에 선포하는 일에 협력해야 할 것입니다. 하느님께서 어떤 일을 하실지 그 누가 알겠습니까? 성령께서 코르넬리우스의 집안에 권능으로 돌연히 임하신 일을 상기해 보면, 그와 똑같은 일이 오늘날에도 일어날 수 있음을 깨달을 수 있을 것입니다!

성자께서는 수난과 죽음을 당하시기 전날 밤,
모든 이들이 하나가 되게 하시어
세상이 믿게 해 주십사고 기도하셨습니다.
(요한 17,21) 이제 이 기도를 저희의 기도로
바치오니, 아버지, 저희가 하나 되게
해 주십시오!
모든 그리스도인이 하나 되게 하시어,
저희 증언을 통해 많은 이들이
당신과 당신의 아드님이신 예수님을
알게 하여 주십시오.”
