We all know people who can light up any room they walk into. Some people make you break into a smile when you see them because you remember previous good times with them. This kind of reaction is based on past experiences you have had with these people. You know them well enough to believe that good things always happen when they're around.
Peter told the high priest, "We must obey God rather than any human authority"(Acts 5:29). These words can take on more than one sense for us. Taken in isolation from the rest of the story told in this chapter of Acts, this statement can sound defiant, to the point of arrogant, of Peter. It could lead us to believe that it's okay to be just as strident and pig-headed ourselves. Yet we know from Actseven from the Gospels that this wasn't Peter's way. And we also know that it's not what God wants of us.
Peter was simply modeling himself on Jesus, his Master and best friend. He knew that Jesus' dignity and confidence came from a humble reliance on his Father and a strong conviction of what his Father had sent him to do. So like Jesus, Peter was firm and direct when he needed to be, but it came from humility, not obnoxious self-righteousness. Rather than imagining Peter addressing the Sanhedrin in anger or indignation, it is much easier to picture him speaking in a matter-of-fact voice, perhaps tinged with a bit of sadness over his listeners' stubbornness.
We must be willing to speak up when the situation demands it. God doesn't want us to be doormats or to think that our job is to make everyone happy with us. At the same time, however, God wants us to try at peace with everyone. When we try our best to treat everyone with the same humility and candor that Jesus used, people will trust us and will take us seriously. It is our witness of humility, love, and service that will win people to Christ. Then we can light up a room with the light of Christ shining through us.

들어서는 방마다 빛을 밝히는 사람들을 우리는 모두 알고 있습니다. 만나기만 하면 그들과 보낸 즐거웠던 시절이 떠올라 저절로 미소가 지어지는 사람들도 있습니다. 이런 반응은 그 사람들과 과거에 나누었던 경험에서 오는 것이지요. 당신은 그들이 주위에 있으면 늘 좋은 일만 생길 거라고 믿을 만큼 그들을 잘 알고 있습니다.
사도 베드로는 대사제에게 “사람에게 순종하는 것보다 하느님께 순종하는 것이 더욱 마땅합니다.”(사도 5,29)라고 말했습니다. 베드로의 이 말은 우리에게 한 가지 이상의 의미를 지닙니다. 사도행전 5장 전체에서 이 부분만 따로 떼어놓고 보면, 베드로의 이런 진술은 오만하게 들릴 정도로 도전적입니다. 마치 남의 귀에 거슬리는 말을 하거나 완고하게 굴어도 된다고 생각하게 할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 우리는 그게 베드로의 방식이 아니라는 것을 사도행전과 나아가 복음 전체를 통해 알고 있으며, 더구나 하느님께서 우리에게 바라시는 태도가 아니라는 것도 압니다.
베드로는 단지 그의 스승이요 가장 좋은 친구이신 예수님께서 하신 대로 따라 하고 있을 뿐이었습니다. 베드로는 예수님의 위엄과 자신감이 아버지께 대한 겸손한 신뢰와 더불어 아버지께서 당신더러 무엇을 하라고 보내셨는지 확실하게 아는 데에서 비롯된다는 것을 알고 있었지요. 그래서 그는 예수님과 마찬가지로 필요할 때는 매우 단호하고 직설적이었지만, 그것은 눈살을 찌푸리게 하는 자만심에서가 아니라 겸손에서 오는 것이었습니다. 우리에게는 베드로가 의회 원로들 앞에서 분개한 어투로 역설하는 모습보다는, 차분하면서도 어찌 보면 청중들의 완고함을 안타깝게 여기는 어조로 발언하고 있는 모습이 더 쉽게 떠오르지요.
어쩔 수 없는 상황에 처할 때는 기꺼이 목소리를 높여야 합니다. 하느님께서는 우리가 모욕을 받아도 침묵하거나, 누구든지 비위를 맞춰주는 게 자신의 일이라고 생각하는 걸 원하지 않으십니다. 하지만 동시에 우리가 모든 이들과 평화롭게 지내기를 바라십니다. 우리가 예수님께서 보이신 겸손과 공정함으로 사람들을 대한다면, 그들은 우리를 신뢰하며 진정으로 받아들일 것입니다. 사람들을 그리스도께 인도하는 비결은 우리가 겸손과 사랑, 그리고 봉사를 통해 보여 주는 증언입니다. 그렇게 할 때 우리는 우리를 통해 빛나는 그리스도의 빛으로 온 방을 환히 비출 수 있습니다.
“성령님, 오늘 저를 당신의 도구로 삼으시어
예수님을 통해 우리의 것이 된
충만한 생명으로 다른 이들을 이끌게
해 주십시오. 제가 무슨 일을 하든
그 안에서 예수님을 더욱 닮아가게 해 주십시오.”
