Who is this Jesus who was crucified on Good Friday and rose on Easter Sunday? This is a question worth asking everyday. Whenever we seek the answer, the Holy Spirit will take us further into the mystery of Christ and reveal more and more to us. Often, however, when we read Scripture, we tend to reduce Jesus to what our mind recalls about him. The Servant Songs in the Book of Isaiah, however, can give us prophetic glimpses into Jesus and raise up our minds into the mystery of the Word made flesh who suffered for us.
Who is Jesus? He is the servant of God sent to fulfill all the hopes of Israel. He is in such solidarity with the chosen people of God that he even bears their name, Israel (Isaiah 49:1). He is the one hidden in the Father's "quiver" for just the right time (49:2). And when that time came, he manifested himself to Israel and offered them a share in his Father's glory.
Who is Jesus? He is not only the fulfillment of Israel's long-promised restoration. He is also a "light to the nations," destined to bring salvation to all peoples (Isaiah 49:6). So great is God's love for his creation that he became a man in order to bring salvation to every corner of the earth. Through Jesus, every person in the world is now invited to enter into a covenant relationship with God.
Do you believe that God has united himself to you? Do you believe that the bond of love he has with you is so strong that it cannot be broken, except by your own choosing? There is nothing that Jesus cannot do for you. Do you have painful memories? He can remove their sting by leading you through steps of healing and forgiveness. Is a loved one suffering through a crisis of faith? He can draw them to his side as you pray, serve, and gently reach out to them with words of encouragement and hope. This is who Jesus is. No one is beyond his saving power.

"Lord Jesus, I surrender to your wisdom and love. By your Spirit, I want to turn away from relying only on human wisdom for help. Lord, I trust in your saving power."

성금요일에 십자가에 못 박혀 돌아가시고 부활 대축일에 다시 살아나신 이 예수님이란 분은 대체 어떤 분일까요? 날마다 질문해 볼 만한 문제입니다. 우리가 여기에 답을 구하려 할 때마다, 성령께서는 우리를 보다 심오한 그리스도의 신비 속으로 데려가시어 더욱 더 많은 것을 드러내 보여 주실 것입니다. 하지만 우리는 성경을 읽을 때면 종종 예수님을 우리가 생각하는 모습으로 축소시키는 경향이 있습니다. 그렇지만 이사야서에 나오는 ‘주님의 종’의 노래는 예수님의 예언자적 편린들을 보여 주며, 말씀이 사람이 되어 우리를 위해 수난하신 신비를 볼 수 있도록 우리의 정신을 고양시킵니다.
예수님이 어떤 분이십니까? 이스라엘의 모든 희망을 이루고자 하느님께서 보내신 종입니다. 그분은 이스라엘이라는 그들의 이름을 지어 주실 정도로 하느님께서 선택하신 백성과 굳게 결속되어 있습니다.(이사 49,1) 그분은 적당한 때를 기다려 하느님께서 ‘화살 통’ 속에 감추어 둔 분이십니다.(49,2) 그리고 그때가 왔을 때 자신을 이스라엘 백성에게 드러내시고 하느님 아버지의 영광을 그들에게 나누어 주셨습니다.
예수님이 어떤 분이십니까? 그분은 이스라엘을 되살린다는 오래된 약속을 이루시는 분일 뿐 아니라, 모든 백성에게 구원을 가져오기로 되어 있는‘민족들의 빛’입니다.(49,6) 하느님은 당신의 창조물을 몹시도 사랑하시어 지구 위 구석구석까지 구원을 가져다 주시려고 사람이 되셨습니다. 이 세상 모든 이들은 이제 예수님을 통하여 하느님과 계약의 관계를 맺도록 초대받았습니다.
하느님께서 당신을 그분과 하나로 묶으셨다는 것을 믿습니까? 그분이 당신과 맺은 사랑의 결합이 아주 튼튼해서 당신이 끊어버리기로 선택하지 않는 한 결코 그렇게 되지 않는다는 것을 믿습니까? 예수님께서는 당신을 위해서라면 못하는 일이 없으십니다. 아픈 기억을 가지고 계신가요? 주님께서 치유와 용서의 길로 당신을 이끌어 그 아픔을 낫게 하실 것입니다. 사랑하는 사람이 신앙의 위기에서 고통받고 있나요? 당신이 그들을 위해 기도하고 봉사하며 희망과 격려의 말로 따뜻하게 다가갈 때, 주님께서 그분 곁으로 그들을 이끌어 들이실 것입니다. 예수님은 바로 이런 분이십니다. 그분 구원의 손길이 미치지 않는 사람은 아무도 없습니다.

저를 맡깁니다. 당신 성령으로, 온전히
인간의 지혜에만 의지해 도움을 구하던 데서
벗어나고 싶습니다.
주님, 당신 구원의 힘을 저는 믿습니다.”
