What is the reason Moses gives the Israelites for observing the law? He tells them that if they put the commandments into practice, they will show the nations the greatness of their God. "put into practice" is the key phrase here. Two thousand years before Christ, Yahweh wanted his people to know that giving lip service was not enough. They had to observe his commands. How else would the pagans know that he was the true God? To witness to God's love and righteousness in action was much more powerful than merely reciting his statutes.
How much more true that is for us, who have received the fullness of God's revelation! Jesus didn't just give us a set of laws; he showed us what the law really meant. He showed us that we are to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind, and our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-38). However, sometimes we take the easy way out and hope that simply going to church and saying our prayers is enough.
We all need to have a "heart checkup" from time to time. Am I like those Pharisees who put too much emphasis on ritual and observance? Or am I going through my day asking, "What would Jesus do?" and looking for ways to reach out to the people around me? Am I stuck in my comfort zone? Or am I ready to step out in faith and trust? It's always a good idea to evaluate our walk with the Lord on a regular basis.
So how can you be a light to your neighborhoodor to your family today? How can your witness shine out in a way that will touch people's hearts and move them closer to the Lord? Seek the Spirit's guidance, and he will show you how to share his love. Only remember this very important truth: If we want to obey God's laws, our best hope lies in receiving his grace. We can't walk the walk without Jesus walking with us!

모세가 이스라엘 백성에게 그들이 지킬 계율을 내려준 이유는 무엇입니까? 그는 백성들이 율법을 잘 실천하면 모든 민족에게 자신들의 하느님이 얼마나 위대하신지 보여 주게 될 것이라고 말합니다. 여기에서는 ‘실천하면’이 핵심 구절입니다. 그리스도가 이 땅에 오시기 이천 년 전에 이미 하느님께서는 말로만 섬기는 것으로는 충분치 않음을 당신 백성들이 알기를 바라셨던 거지요. 이스라엘 백성들은 모세의 율법을 지켜야 했습니다. 그렇지 않고서 이교도들이 그분이 진정한 하느님이시라는 것을 어찌 알겠습니까? 하느님의 사랑과 정의를 행동으로 보여 주는 것이 그분의 법규를 그저 읊조리는 것보다 훨씬 더 힘이 있었습니다.
이러할진대, 하느님의 계시를 충만하게 받은 우리에게야 얼마나 더 그러하겠습니까! 예수님께서는 우리에게 일련의 계율을 주기만 하신 게 아니라, 그 계율이 의미하는 바를 몸소 보여 주셨습니다. 우리의 마음과 목숨과 정신을 다하여 주님을 사랑하고 우리 이웃을 우리 자신처럼 사랑하라고 보여 주신 것이지요.(마태 22,37-38) 그런데도 우리는 때로 쉬운 길을 골라서 그저 성당에나 가고 기도문만 외우면 충분하지 않을까 바라곤 합니다.
우리는 누구나 때때로 마음의 ‘건강 검진’을 받을 필요가 있습니다. 나는 바리사이처럼 전례나 율법 준수에 너무 큰 비중을 두는가, 아니면 “예수님이라면 어떻게 하셨을까?” 물으면서 이웃에게 도움의 손길을 뻗을 방도를 찾으며 하루를 보내고 있는가? 나만의 안락한 공간에 틀어박혀 있는가, 아니면 신앙과 믿음으로 세상을 향해 나갈 준비가 되어 있는가? 주님과 함께 걷는 길을 정기적으로 점검해 보는 것은 언제고 바람직한 생각입니다.
그러니 당신은 오늘 어떻게 당신의 이웃에게, 혹은 가족에게 빛이 되겠습니까? 당신은 어떻게 증언을 하여 그 빛으로 사람들의 마음을 감동시키고 그들이 주님께 더 가까이 갈 수 있도록 하겠습니까? 성령께 인도를 구하면, 그분께서 주님의 사랑을 어떻게 나눌지 당신에게 알려 주실 것입니다. 아주 중요한 진리 하나만을 기억하십시오. 하느님의 계율에 순종하고 싶다면, 우리가 제일 바랄 것은 그분의 은총을 받는 것입니다. 예수님께서 우리와 함께 하시지 않는 한, 우리는 그 길을 갈 수 없습니다!
