"Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"(Luke 5:30)
Some Pharisees posed this question to Jesus when they found him attending a banquet at Levi's house. They were concerned that Jesus, being a rabbi, would become unclean by his association with such people. But it didn't seem to bother him ­ and that is greatly to our own benefit today. After all, we too are sinners, and Jesus doesn't reject us.
Every time we gather to celebrate Mass, we come to a large table full of others just like us ­ sinners in desperate need of redemption. We all come with different needs and issues: a critically ill spouse, squabbles among family members, self-righteous attitudes, or a lack of compassion. And yet, despite our weaknesses and faults, Jesus shows up. Just as he did for Levi and his guests, Jesus offers us his healing, forgiving, and transforming power.
Jesus didn't come to Levi's house just to socialize with his guests. He came to bring them his life-changing message and his love. No doubt, many of them became believers that very day. This is exactly what Jesus can do for us at every Mass. As we listen to the word of God and ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten us, our minds can be renewed, and our minds can be transformed (Romans 12:2). As we eat his body and drink his blood, we can be healed (Matthew 8:8).
This is not just a theory to help make us feel good. It's a promise from the Son of God himself. So when you go to Mass tomorrow, go with eager anticipation. Jesus will be there, once more enjoying the company of sinners such as yourself. He will be there, ready to forgive you and embrace you. He will be there to change your heart and restore your relationships. When you tell him, "Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed," know that he hears you and will fulfill his promises to you. All he has to do is to say the word! He wants to give you the fullness of life. Will you receive all he has for you?

and invite you to be Lord over every area
of my life. Make me like you, Lord!"

“당신들은 어째서 세리와 죄인들과 함께 먹고 마시는 것이요?”(루카 5,30)
예수님께서 레위의 집에서 잔칫상에 앉아 계신 것을 보고서 몇몇 바리사이들이 예수님께 이런 질문을 던졌습니다. 랍비인 예수님께서 그런 자들과 어울리다 부정해지지나 않을까 염려스러웠던 거지요. 그러나 주님은 그런 것에 구애받지 않는 것처럼 보입니다. 그런 점이 오늘날의 우리에게 얼마나 다행인지요. 어쨌든, 우리 역시 죄인들인데, 예수님은 그런 우리를 버리지 않으실 테니까요.
미사를 드리러 한자리에 모일 때마다, 우리는 구원이 절실히 필요한 같은 처지의 사람들이 무리지어 앉아 있는 식탁에 오는 것입니다. 우리 각자는 저마다 필요한 것이나 문젯거리들을 안고 오지요. 중병을 앓고 있는 배우자, 가족 간의 말다툼, 독선적 태도, 냉랭함 … . 그러면 예수님께서는 우리의 나약함과 결점들에도 불구하고 모습을 드러내십니다. 그날 레위와 손님들에게 하신 것처럼, 우리에게 당신의 치유와 용서, 그리고 변화의 힘을 선사해 주십니다.
예수님께서 레위의 집에 오신 것은 그저 손님들과 어울리기 위해서가 아니었습니다. 그분께서는 삶을 변화시키는 메시지와 사랑을 그들에게 가져다 주려고 오셨습니다. 틀림없이 그날 온 손님 중 많은 이가 그 자리에서 주님을 믿게 되었을 겁니다. 예수님께서 미사 때마다 우리에게 베푸시는 은혜가 바로 그것입니다. 하느님의 말씀을 듣고 성령께 우리를 비추어 달라고 청할 때 우리 정신이 새롭게 되고 우리 자신이 변화할 수 있습니다.(로마 12,2) 주님의 몸을 먹고 주님의 피를 마실 때 우리는 치유될 수 있습니다.(마태 8,8)
이는 그저 만족감을 주려는, 이론에 불과한 말이 아닙니다. 그것은 하느님의 아드님께서 직접 하신 약속입니다. 그러니 내일 미사에 갈 때 큰 기대를 품고 가십시오. 예수님께서는 당신 같은 죄인들과 어울리는 것을 또 한 번 흡족해 하시며 거기 계실 것입니다. 당신의 모든 잘못을 용서하고 품에 안아 주시려 거기 계실 것입니다. 당신의 마음을 변화시키고 사람들과의 관계를 회복시켜 주시려 거기 계실 것입니다. “주님, 제 안에 주님을 모시기에 합당치 않사오나, 한 말씀만 하소서. 제가 곧 나으리이다.”라고 말씀드릴 때 주님께서 그 말을 들으시고 약속하신 것을 이루실 것임을 믿으십시오. 그분은 한 말씀만 하시면 됩니다! 주님께서는 당신에게 충만한 생명을 주고 싶어하십니다. 주님께서 당신을 위해 마련하신 온갖 것들을 받지 않으시렵니까?

감사합니다! 주님을 제 마음에 영접하고
제 삶의 구석구석을 다스리시는 주인으로
모시오니, 제가 당신을 닮게 해 주십시오,
주님!”
