The poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once wrote, “The sky is filled with stars invisible by day." That's very close to what is being described in this passage from Hebrews. Faith is an invisible reality, and to possess it we need to go beyond the limits of our senses. So many of us tend to limit our faith because we can't yet see, feel, or touch the promises God has for us. We confine God to doing only what is safe for us, and by doing so, we put him in a box!
It's not always easy to live a faith-filled life, especially when the world is shouting in our ears. We are constantly bombarded with the message that this life is limited to what we can see. But when we quiet our hearts enough to hear God's still, small voice, we come to learn that the exact opposite is true. Following the world leads to emptiness, but giving our hearts to God and trying our best to trust in is the most freeing, life affirming thing we can do.
We have the proof in God's word in today's passage, in fact. We have the examples of heroes such as Noah and Abraham, who hoped in God's plan and were not disappointed. Above all, we can look to Jesus as the prime example of faith. His prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane reveals his complete abandonment to God: "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done" (Luke 22:42). Because Jesus followed his Father's will all the way to the cross, he won our salvation and opened the way for us to live in confident faith.
Brothers and sisters, let's not think that we are any different from Abraham, Abel, Enoch, or Noah. If we aim high in faith, we'll find the power to move mountains. God has so much in store for us! It may mean being stretched a bit; it may mean stepping out of our usual routinesbut God wants to use us to reveal his power and love. So don? let fear keep you from your inheritance. Only believe, step out in faith, and watch the miracles flow!

미국의 시인 H. W. 롱펠로의 시 중에는 “하늘은 낮에 보이지 않던 별들로 가득 차네.”라는 구절이 있습니다. 오늘 독서에 나오는 히브리서의 구절과 매우 흡사하군요. 믿음은 보이지 않는 실체이고, 이를 획득하려면 감각의 한계를 넘어서야 합니다. 우리 중 많은 이는 하느님께서 우리에게 하신 약속들을 보고 느끼고 만질 수 없기에 신앙에 한계를 두려는 경향이 있습니다. 우리는 우리에게 무난한 것만 하시도록 하느님을 제약하고, 그럼으로써 하느님께서 원하시는 것을 하지 못하게 합니다!
믿음으로 가득한 삶을 살기란 늘 쉬운 일만은 아닙니다. 특히 세상이 우리의 귀에 대고 소리쳐 댈 때는 더욱 그렇습니다. 인생은 눈에 보이는 것이 전부라는 메시지가 사방에서 밀려듭니다. 그러나 마음을 고요히 가라앉히고 하느님의 나지막한 속삭임에 귀 기울일 때 우리는 그 반대가 진실임을 알게 됩니다. 세상을 뒤쫓다 보면 허무에 빠지고 말지만, 우리 마음을 하느님께 드리고 온전히 의지하면 그 어느 때보다 자유로워지고 확실하게 생명을 보장받습니다.
실제로 오늘 독서에 나오는 하느님의 말씀에 그 증거가 있습니다. 그것은 하느님의 계획에 희망을 두고 결코 실망하지 않았던 노아나 아브라함과 같은 신앙 선조들의 실례입니다. 게다가 으뜸가는 본보기인 예수님을 우리는 볼 수 있습니다. 예수님께서 겟세마니 동산에서 올린 기도는 하느님 아버지께 온전히 자신을 내맡기는 모습을 보여 줍니다. “아버지께서 원하신다면 이 잔을 저에게서 거두어 주십시오. 그러나 제 뜻이 아니라 아버지의 뜻이 이루어지게 하십시오.”(루카 22,42) 예수님께서는 십자가에 이르는 길 내내 아버지의 뜻에 따르심으로써 우리의 구원을 획득하시고, 굳건한 믿음으로 살아갈 길을 우리에게 열어 주셨습니다.
형제자매 여러분, 우리는 아브라함이나 아벨, 에녹이나 노아와 다른 사람들이라고 생각하지 맙시다. 우리의 믿음에 뜻을 높이 세우면 산도 움직일 수 있는 힘이 생길 것입니다. 하느님께서는 우리를 위해 많은 것을 예비해 두셨지요! 때로는 힘에 부치는 노력과 익숙하지 않은 일도 해야겠지만, 하느님께서는 당신의 능력과 사랑을 이 세상에 드러내기 위해 우리를 쓰고자 하십니다. 그러니 상속받은 유산을 두려움 때문에 놓치지 마십시오. 오직 굳건히 믿고, 신앙의 발걸음을 내딛으며, 어떤 기적들이 쏟아지는지 지켜보세요!

주님 사랑 안에서 성장하지 못하도록
가로막는 것은 무엇이든 과감히 버리겠습니다!
