God's instruction to Noah to "be fruitful and fill the earth" can sound to our modern ears like a call to world domination (Genesis 9:1). But it's more about being active than being aggressive. It's really an invitation to participate with God in the ongoing creation of the world. We are not to be idle bystanders watching the mystery of the kingdom of God unfold. As followers of Jesus, we can actually help make that kingdom come to pass. God wants us to make this world reflect the glory of the world to comeso we have definitely got our work cut out for us!
Building the kingdom is no easy job. Every day, we encounter some of the terrible realities that are part of a fallen world: drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, unemployment, and the neglect of the elderly. But part of filling the earth means dirtying ourselves a bit as we address these very issues. You can't build a just society simply by wishing it could be so. You must get out into that society and work for the common good.
This doesn't mean that we are all called to be just like Blessed Mother Teresa. Even if we're not out there on the battle lines, we all have a mission field. We are co-creators with God whenever we try to fulfill his commandment of love: when we nurture our families so that they become his lights to the world; when we share the good news of the gospel with our neighbors; and when we stand in prayer for the needs of our brothers and sisters. If offered to God, even our most insignificant actions can bring about his kingdom!
While we strive to have a living faith that impacts society, let's remember that God's strength is with us. He doesn't send us out alone! Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we can answer his invitation by using the gifts and talents he has given us. We can make this world better! That was God's vision when he created us, and it's still his vision today. Let's believe that his power in us can accomplish anything!

하느님께서 노아에게 “자식을 많이 낳고 번성하여 땅을 가득 채워라”라고 하신 말씀이 현대인들의 귀에는 마치 세상을 지배하라는 말씀으로 들릴지도 모르겠습니다.(창세 9,1) 그러나 이 말씀은 지배적이 아니라 적극적이 되라는 뜻입니다. 즉 지금도 진행되고 있는 하느님의 창조사업에 동참하라는 진정한 초대입니다. 우리는 눈앞에 펼쳐지는 하느님 나라의 신비를 바라보기만 하는 구경꾼이 되어서는 안 됩니다. 예수님을 따르는 우리는 하느님 나라를 세우는 일에 구체적으로 협력해야 합니다. 하느님께서는 우리가 이 세상을 장차 올 하느님 나라의 영광을 반영하는 곳으로 만들기를 바라십니다. 그러니 우리에게 맡겨진 일이 무엇인지 분명하지요!
하느님 나라를 건설하는 일은 쉽지 않습니다. 우리는 날마다 타락한 세상의 일부인 마약과 알코올 남용, 가정 폭력, 실업 그리고 노인 경시 풍조 등 끔찍한 현실의 단면과 마주칩니다. 그러나 이 땅의 빈곳을 채우려면 우리가 바로 그런 문제들에 개입하면서 자신이 얼마간 더렵혀지는 것도 개의치 않아야 합니다. 정의로운 사회는 어떠해야 한다는 갈망만으로는 그런 사회를 이룰 수 없습니다. 그 사회 속으로 뛰어들어 공동선을 위해 투신해야 합니다.
그렇다고 해서 우리 모두가 복자 마더 데레사처럼 되라는 소명을 받았다는 말은 아닙니다. 우리가 비록 최전선에 뛰어들어 싸우진 않더라도 우리에게는 각자의 선교 현장이 있습니다. 우리가 주님 사랑의 계명에 따라 살려고 노력할 때에, 즉 가족들을 양육하여 그들이 세상에 나가 하느님의 빛이 되게 할 때나, 복음의 기쁜 소식을 이웃들과 나눌 때, 형제자매의 부족함을 채워 주십사 기도드릴 때에 우리는 하느님과 더불어 공동창조자가 됩니다. 우리가 아무리 사소한 것을 실천할지라도 그것이 하느님께 바쳐진다면 하느님 나라가 이 땅에 오게 할 수 있습니다!
우리가 사회에 영향을 미치는 살아 있는 신앙인이 되려고 분투노력하는 한, 하느님의 권능이 우리와 함께 하심을 기억합시다. 그분께서는 우리를 절대 혼자 내보내지 않으십니다! 성령의 능력을 받은 우리는 그분이 주신 은총과 재능을 발휘함으로써 그분의 초대에 응답할 수 있습니다. 우리는 이 세상을 더 좋은 곳으로 만들 수 있습니다! 그것이 하느님께서 우리 인간을 창조하실 때 지니신 꿈이었고, 지금도 그 꿈은 여전합니다. 우리 안에 있는 하느님의 권능으로 무엇이나 이룰 수 있음을 믿읍시다!
“오소서, 성령님. 저희 마음을 채우시어
당신을 위해 세상을 변화시키도록
저희를 보내 주십시오.
저희 힘이신 당신과 함께
누리의 모습을 새롭게 하겠습니다.” |
