Are they out of their minds? That may have been what the world thought of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob. They were all heirs of a promise from God, and they never stopped believing iteven though they never saw that promise fulfilled. Abraham left his home at God‘s direction. He even steeled himself to sacrifice Isaac out of trusting obedience to Yahweh. But neither he nor his family saw the final result of such radical faith: a people "numerous as the stars in the sky," from whom would come the savior of the world. It does sound a little crazy, doesn't it?
We too share some of the "lunacy" of our ancestors in faith. At every Mass, we proclaim that the bread and wine we receive are the body and blood of Jesus. Those who don't accept this truth may think it is sheer nonsense, but like Abraham, we put our trust in the Lord and believe what we cannot see.
Or what about the way we pray "thy kingdom come" The priest even declares, for all of us, that we "wait in joyful hope" for this kingdom's coming. Yet looking at the world around us, how many of us are led to wonder whether God's kingdom will ever triumph? Again, it seems out of touch with realityand still we believe.
Why do we believe? Because we know that the Mass is a foretaste of what we will experience in heaven, when the kingdom has finally come. Because we know that as we await this kingdom, we can enter into communion with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit at the Eucharist. We are just sojourners on this earth, and we are often tempted to believe that we can find our happiness here. However, the Eucharist is a sign and a seal of God's promise to bring us all the way home. It gives us hope to carry on, knowing that Jesus will stay with us until the end of our journey. And so we continue to believe. And, believing as we do, we are blessed beyond all measure.
"Jesus, as I receive your body and blood,
open my heart to believe your promise!
Fill me with the joy of knowing
that you are with me.
Help me to keep my eyes fixed on you,
so that I can come closer to you today,
and be transformed by your love!" |
‘정신 나간 사람들 아니야?’ 세상 사람들은 아브라함이나 사라, 이사악과 야곱에 대하여 이렇게 생각하였을 것입니다. 그들은 모두 하느님이 주신 약속을 상속받은 자들이었고, 한 번도 그 믿음을 버린 적이 없었습니다. 그 약속이 이루어지는 것을 보지 못했는데도 말이지요. 아브라함은 하느님의 지시에 따라 집을 떠났고, 심지어 하느님께 순종하여 아들 이사악을 제물로 바치려고 하였습니다. 그러나 그도, 그의 가족도 그토록 완전한 믿음이 결실을 맺는 것을 보지는 못하였습니다. “하늘의 별처럼 수가 많은” 후손이라니요, 또 그중에서 세상을 구원하는 자가 나다니요. 좀 미친 소리 같지 않나요?
우리도 역시 신앙 선조들의 이런 ‘구름 잡는 이야기’를 믿습니다. 우리는 미사 때마다 우리가 모시는 빵과 포도주가 예수님의 몸과 피라고 선포합니다. 이 진리를 받아들이지 않는 사람들이 생각하기에는 말도 안 되는 일일지 모르지만, 우리는 아브라함처럼 주님을 신뢰하고 볼 수 없는 것을 믿습니다.
그렇지 않다면 어떻게 “하느님의 나라가 오시며”라고 기도할 수 있겠습니까? 사제는 우리 모두가 “복된 희망을 품고” 그 나라가 오기를 기다린다고 서슴지 않고 말합니다. 하지만 주변 세상을 돌아보면, ‘하느님의 나라가 승리하는 날이 과연 올까’ 하며 의문을 가질 사람이 우리 중에 얼마나 많겠습니까? 정말이지, 현실과는 동떨어진 것 같지만 그래도 우리는 여전히 믿고 있습니다.
우리는 어째서 믿습니까? 왜냐하면 우리는 언젠가 하느님 나라가 오시면 하늘에서 경험하게 될 것을 미리 맛보는 것이 ‘미사’라는 것을 알기 때문이지요. 또한 하느님 나라가 오심을 기다릴 때에, 우리는 성체 성사로 성부와 성자, 성령과 한 몸이 될 수 있다는 것을 알기 때문이지요. 우리는 이승에 잠시 머물다 갈 뿐인데도 여기에서 우리의 행복을 찾을 수 있다고 믿고 싶을 때가 자주 있습니다. 그러나 성체 성사는 하느님께서 우리를 본향으로 데려가신다는 약속의 표징이자 보증입니다. 그것은 우리에게 꿋꿋이 나아갈 희망을 줍니다. 우리의 지상 여정이 끝날 때까지 예수님께서 우리 곁에 계심을 믿기 때문이지요. 그래서 우리는 계속해서 믿는 것입니다. 그리고 지금처럼 그렇게 믿으면, 우리는 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 은총을 받을 것입니다.
“예수님, 제가 주님의 몸과 피를 받아 모실 때
주님의 약속을 믿도록 제 마음을
열어 주십시오! 주님께서 저와 함께하심을
느끼는 기쁨으로 저를 가득 채워 주십시오.
주님만 오롯이 바라보게 하시어,
오늘도 제가 주님께 더 가까이 다가가고,
주님의 사랑으로 변화되게 하여 주십시오!” |
