On this day of celebration, we are brought back to the upper room to be with the disciples when they first met the risen Lord. John tells us that when Jesus came to them, he showed them his hands and side, and that this is what caused the disciples to rejoice (John 20:20). There was something about seeing Jesus' wounds now glorifiedthat thrilled their hearts.
We don't have to look too hard to identify the work of the Holy Spirit here. It was the Spirit who showed the disciples that Jesus didn't just come back from the dead but that he had actually defeated death and had been declared Lord of heaven and earth. By the Spirit, they realized that because of Jesus' wounds they too could be filled with divine life, just as their Master was. And this revelation filled them with excitement.
Brothers and sisters, the Holy Spirit wants to give all of us the same revelation. After all, this is what Pentecost is all aboutseeing Jesus in a whole new way. Whenever we pray, whenever we go to Mass, the Spirit wants to reveal Jesus to our heartshis love, his mercy, and his power. He wants to break down the walls that keep us trapped in a narrow, shallow understanding of God's plan. He wants to do this so that he can form us into a people on fire with love for him, willing to surrender our lives to him, and eager to bring his good news to a wounded world.
We don't have to fear the Holy Spirit. He may come in fire, but only to burn away the things that keep us from Jesus. We can carry so much "baggage" in our hearts fears, anxieties, and resentments. But by the power of the cross, the Holy Spirit wants to lighten our load so that we can embrace Jesus as our just and loving Savior who wants the very best for us.
"Jesus, I want to rejoice in you
just as the apostles did.
Holy Spirit, burn away everything
that keeps me from your presence.
Come, Spirit, and give me a new revelation
of Jesus."

대축일인 오늘, 우리는 부활하신 주님을 처음으로 만났던 때의 제자들과 함께 있기 위해 다락방으로 올라갑니다. 요한 복음사가는 말하기를, 예수님께서 그들에게 오셨을 때에 당신의 손과 옆구리를 보여 주셨고 제자들은 이를 보고 기뻐했다고 합니다.(요한 20,20) 이제는 영광의 표징이 된 예수님의 상처, 그것을 보는 제자들의 마음은 형용할 수 없는 감격으로 떨렸을 것입니다.
이 장면에서 우리는 성령의 역사하심을 알아보기 위해 너무 열심히 들여다보지 않아도 됩니다. 예수님께서 다만 죽은 자들 가운데에서 살아나셨을 뿐 아니라, 참으로 죽음을 물리치고 하늘과 땅의 주님으로 선포되셨음을 제자들에게 알려주신 것은 바로 성령이셨습니다. 예수님의 상처로 말미암아 자신들 또한 스승처럼 거룩한 생명으로 가득 찰 수 있다는 것을 깨달은 것도 성령 덕분이었습니다. 그리고 이런 계시로 인해 그들은 흥분에 휩싸였습니다.
형제자매 여러분, 성령께서는 우리 모두에게도 같은 계시를 내려주고 싶어하십니다. 결국 예수님을 완전히 새로운 방식으로 알게 되는 것이 성령 강림절이 의미하는 바니까요. 우리가 기도할 때나 미사에 갈 때마다 성령께서는 우리의 마음에 예수님을 드러내 보이고 싶어하십니다. 그분의 사랑과 자비와 권능을 보여 주고 싶어하십니다. 하느님의 계획을 원대하고 심오하게 이해하지 못하도록 가로막는 장벽을 허물고 싶어하십니다. 성령께서는 이렇게 하심으로써, 우리를 당신을 향한 사랑으로 불타오르고, 자신의 삶을 그분께 기꺼이 내어맡기며, 상처받은 세상에 그분의 기쁜 소식을 전하고자 열망하는 사람들로 만들기 원하십니다.
우리는 성령을 두려워하지 않아도 됩니다. 그분은 불꽃으로 오시지만 우리를 예수님과 갈라놓는 것들만 태워버리실 테니까요. 우리 마음속에는 공포와 불안, 원한 같은 ‘짐’들이 너무나 많습니다. 그러나 성령께서는 십자가의 힘으로 우리의 짐을 가볍게 하시어, 우리에게 가장 좋은 것만 주시는 분, 공정하고 사랑이 넘치는 구세주이신 예수님을 우리가 끌어안을 수 있게 되기를 바라십니다.
“예수님, 제자들처럼 저도
당신 안에서 기뻐하고 싶습니다.
성령님, 저를 당신의 현존에서
멀어지게 하는 것들을 모조리 태워 없애시고,
제게 오시어 예수님을 새롭게 드러내
보여 주십시오.”
