"Clap your hands!"(Psalm 47:2)
Have you ever noticed that every time you read a psalm, you're actually talking to God? The Psalms have been called the Bible's prayer book, and it's no wonder. Each one of them in its own way can move our hearts closer to the Lord as we contemplate his love, his mercy, and his justice. Today's psalm is no exception. It urges us to honor God as King over all the earth by clapping our hands and singing songs of praise to him.
But surely our lives are about more than praying to God? Of course the prophet Zechariah told the people to shout and rejoice in the Lord (Zechariah 2:14; 9:9). But his contemporary, Haggai, urged the people just as much to go out and work hard to build Jerusalem (Haggai 2:1-4). Even Jesus' close friends, Martha and Mary, seemed to have got into trouble with each other because one wanted to sit and listen to Jesus all day while the other felt compelled to keep cooking and cleaning (Luke 10:38-42).
It's good to know that all of these people are honored as saints. In fact, they show that honoring God in prayer and serving him with action depend upon one another, just as they go hand in hand. If people prayed all day, nothing would get built. Likewise, if people served God all day without praying and listening to him, they wouldn't know what he wanted them to do or how he wanted them to do it.
God wants a church that worships him in prayer and serves him with action. Some of us have been given a desire to love Jesus and be with him all day long. Others have a great desire to serve Jesus and his people. If your desire is more for prayer than action, go ahead and enjoy the psalm today. But make sure that your prayer moves you to action as well. If you tend toward more toward action, make sure you take some time to sit with Jesus and ask for his comfort and direction. Then, the whole church will be built up, and Jesus will be glorified in everything we do.

Show us how you want us to serve you
as we proclaim that you are
'King over all the earth'(Psalm 47:8)."

“손뼉을 쳐라!”(시편 47,2)
당신은 시편을 읽을 때마다 하느님과 진짜로 대화를 나누는 것임을 깨달은 적이 있나요? 시편을 성경의 기도서라고 불러온 것도 이상한 일이 아닙니다. 우리가 주님의 사랑과 자비, 공정하심을 묵상할 때 시편의 구절 하나하나는 각기 나름대로 우리의 마음을 주님께 더 가까이 이끕니다. 오늘의 시편 구절도 예외가 아니지요. 손뼉을 치고 주님을 찬양하는 노래를 부르면서 이 땅의 만물을 다스리는 임금으로서 하느님께 영광을 드리라고 우리를 북돋우고 있습니다.
그런데 분명 하느님께 기도하는 게 우리 삶의 전부는 아니잖아요? 물론 즈카르야 예언자는 백성들에게 임금님이 오심을 기뻐하며 환성을 올리라고 말합니다.(즈카 2,10; 9,9) 그러나 그와 동시대 인물인 하까이 예언자는 또 그만큼 열렬히 백성들에게 촉구하기를, 밖으로 나가서 예루살렘 재건을 위해 힘껏 일하라고 합니다.(하까 2,1-4) 예수님과 친분이 두터운 마르타와 마리아 자매조차 서로 간에 불화가 있었던 듯싶은데, 이는 한 사람은 온종일 예수님 곁에 앉아서 그분 말씀을 듣고 싶어한 데 반해, 다른 한 사람은 분주하게 요리나 청소 같은 일을 해야 한다고 느낀 데에서 비롯합니다.(루카 10,38-42) 
그런데 이들 모두가 성인으로 추앙받고 있다는 사실에 주목해 보세요. 사실상 그들은 기도로 하느님께 영광을 드리는 것과 활동으로 하느님을 섬기는 것이 마치 손에 손을 잡고 걷는 것처럼 서로서로 지탱하고 보완하는 관계임을 보여 줍니다. 만일 사람들이 온종일 기도만 한다면 아무것도 이룩되지 않겠지요. 이와 마찬가지로, 하루 종일 봉사를 하면서도 기도나 하느님 말씀 듣는 것을 멀리 한다면, 자신들이 무엇을 하기를 하느님께서는 바라시는지, 그것을 어떻게 하기를 바라시는지 알 길이 없을 터입니다.
하느님께서는 기도로 당신을 경배하고 활동으로 당신을 섬기는 교회를 원하십니다. 우리 중 어떤 이들은 예수님을 사랑하고 종일토록 그분과 함께 있고픈 열망을 부여받았고, 또 어떤 이들은 예수님과 그분의 백성에게 봉사하고픈 커다란 열망을 지니고 있습니다. 당신이 활동보다는 기도를 더 하고 싶다면, 어서 그렇게 하면서 오늘의 시편 구절을 음미하세요. 하지만 그 기도가 당신을 실천으로까지 이끌게 하십시오. 당신이 활동 쪽을 선호하는 경향이 있다면 예수님 곁에 앉아 위안과 가르침을 주십사 청하는 시간을 갖도록 하세요. 그렇게 하면 온 교회가 튼튼하게 자라나고 예수님께서는 우리가 하는 모든 일들을 통해 영광을 받으실 것입니다.

당신께 찬양 노래 부릅니다.
주님께서 ‘온 누리의 임금’(시편 47,8)이심을
선포하는 우리가 당신께 어떻게 봉사해야 할지
주님의 뜻을 보여 주십시오.”
