Walk into any church on Holy Saturday, and you will be struck with an overwhelming sense of emptiness. The altar is stripped bare. The tabernacle is emptied. Many churches even shroud their statues and stations of the cross. How symbolic of what the cross is meant to be for us! Just as Jesus emptied himself completely to redeem us, he now calls us to empty ourselves of everything opposed to him. This is a day of watching at the tomb, a day of emptiness and examination, a day to ask the Spirit to hollow us out as we await the dawning of our new life in Christ.
St. Paul declares, “All of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death"(Romans 6:3). Through baptism, we have been "buried with him," so that, having shared in his death, we might share in his risen life (Romans 6:4). What a staggering reality: Because of Jesus' death, we receive the blessings of God's own life!
God's life is his free gift. In no way can we earn it. Still, we are called to cooperate with God so that this gift can become a reality in our everyday lives. Paul tells us to consider ourselves as dead to sin (Romans 6:11). We are called to unite ourselves with Jesus' death. How do we do that? By saying "no" to all that divides us from him. By emptying ourselves of the self-love and self-centeredness that put him on the cross in the first place.
For example, often in the course of the day we may get upset at people for what they have said or done. We may even feel justified in being angry. These are opportunities to practice what St. Paul is talking about. At such moments, we can turn to Jesus and say, "Jesus, you brought all my sins to the cross. I don't want this anger; please, put it to death as you cover me with your blood." If we unite ourselves with Jesus, the power of sin will be broken. Our hearts will be filled with the grace, love, and power of Jesus' resurrection.

"Jesus, thank you for your death for me.
Help me to empty my life before you.
May your Spirit reshape my heart,
so that my heart becomes a fit place
in which you may abide forever."

성토요일에 아무 성당이나 한번 들어가 보세요. 그러면 텅 빈 적막한 느낌에 사로잡힐 것입니다. 제대보는 벗겨지고 감실은 비어 있는데다가, 많은 성당에서는 성상이나 14처에 덮개를 씌워 가려놓기도 하지요. 십자가가 우리에게 의미하는 바는 얼마나 상징적인지요! 예수님께서 우리를 구원하기 위해 당신 자신을 철저하게 비우셨듯이, 이제 그분은 그분에게 반대되는 온갖 것들을 우리 자신에게서 비우라고 요청하십니다. 오늘은 그분의 무덤을 지키는 날이며, 비움과 성찰의 날이고, 그리스도 안에서 새롭게 살아갈 날이 동트기 기다리며 성령께 우리를 비워달라고 청하는 날입니다. 
바오로 사도는 이렇게 선포했습니다. “그리스도 예수님과 하나 되는 세례를 받은 우리가 모두 그분의 죽음과 하나 되는 세례를 받았다는 사실을 여러분은 모릅니까?”(로마 6,3) 우리는 세례를 통하여 “그분과 함께 묻혔습니다.”(로마 6,4) 그리하여 그분의 죽음을 함께한 것처럼 부활하신 생명도 함께 나누게 되었습니다. 이 얼마나 어마어마한 일입니까, 예수님의 죽음으로 인해 하느님의 생명이라는 축복을 받다니요!
하느님의 생명은 거저 주시는 선물입니다. 우리가 얻으려 해서 생기는 게 아닙니다. 하지만 이 선물이 매일의 우리 삶에서 실현되려면 우리도 하느님께 협력해야 합니다. 바오로 사도는 우리 자신을 죄에서는 죽은 것으로 여기라고 말합니다.(로마 6,11) 우리는 예수님의 죽음과 하나 되라고 부름 받습니다. 어떻게 그렇게 합니까? 우리를 예수님과 갈라놓는 모든 것들에게 ‘아니오’라고 말함으로써 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 애초에 예수님을 십자가에 매달게 한 이기적이고 자기중심적인 생각을 우리에게서 모두 비움으로써 그렇게 할 수 있습니다.
예를 들면, 우리는 하루를 지내다가 어떤 사람이 한 말이나 행동 때문에 화가 날 때가 있습니다. 심지어 화내는 게 정당하다고 느끼기까지 합니다. 바로 이런 때가 바오로 사도가 하신 말씀을 실천할 기회입니다. 그런 순간에 예수님을 향하여 말씀해 보세요. “예수님, 당신은 저의 모든 죄를 십자가로 가져가셨습니다. 이렇게 화가 나는 게 저는 싫습니다. 제발 당신의 피로 저를 덮어 화를 사그라지게 해 주십시오.” 우리가 예수님과 하나가 된다면, 죄의 사슬은 끊어지고, 우리의 마음은 은총과 사랑, 부활하신 예수님의 권능으로 가득 찰 것입니다.

“예수님, 우리를 위해 돌아가심에
감사드립니다. 당신 앞에서 저의 삶을
비우도록 도와주십시오.
당신의 영이 저의 마음자리를 가다듬어
당신이 영원히 머무시기에 알맞은 곳이
되게 해 주십시오.”
