Faithful Jews in Jesus' time were so reverent toward God that they wouldn't even quote Scripture without saying, "Thus says the Lord." That's how careful they were not to take any credit for themselves that really belonged to Yahweh. So you can understand why they were horrified when Jesus told them, "The Father and I are one"(John 10:30).
In answer to their accusations of blasphemy, Jesus used Scripture to show them how he had been consecrated and sent by God to do all the works he had been doing. He challenged them to look at these miraculous deeds as proof that God was indeed in him and he was indeed in the Father (John 10:38). When they still would not believe him, all he could do was return to the place where John the Baptist had ministered to fortify himself and recall the words that God spoke at his own baptism: "You are my Son, the Beloved"(Luke 3:22).
As hard as it may be to grasp, this truth that Jesus is in the Father and the Father is in him is at the heart of our redemption. It means that whenever we see the cross we aren't just seeing a man, Jesus of Nazareth, dying there. We are seeing the eternal Son of God, the all-powerful Word of the Father, giving up his life for us. Such a sacrifice makes our redemption complete and eternal. We have been redeemed by God himself! No other work is necessary and nothing or no one can take it away from us.
With this great truth in mind, we can have great confidence before God. Even when we sin, we can turn to him in repentance and know forgiveness, for it has already been given on the cross. We don't need to hide from God or fear his wrath. From the beginning of time, he knew all our inmost thoughts and weaknesses and still he chose to send his Son. And from the moment he was hung on the cross, God was in him reconciling the whole world to himself (2 Corinthians 5:19). With so great a redemption, how can we ever doubt our God?

예수님이 사시던 시대에 믿음이 깊은 유다인들은 너무나 독실한 나머지, “주님께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다.”라는 말을 붙이지 않고는 성경을 인용하지도 않을 정도였습니다. 그들은 그 정도로, 진정 하느님께 속했던 자신들 앞으로는 조금치의 공도 돌리려 하지 않았습니다. 그러니 예수님께서 그들에게 “아버지와 나는 하나다.”(요한 10,30)라고 말씀하셨을 때 그들이 얼마나 기겁하였을지 이해할 만하지요.
예수님께서는 당신을 신성 모독으로 규탄하는 사람들에게, 당신이 하고 계신 모든 일을 하라고 하느님께서 어떻게 당신을 성화하여 보내셨는지 성경을 인용하여 보여 주셨습니다. 그분께서는 그들에게 당신이 행하신 기적들을 보고서, 하느님께서 그분 안에 계시고 그분께서 하느님 아버지 안에 계시다는(요한 10,38) 증거로 삼으라고 촉구하셨습니다. 그럼에도 그들이 여전히 예수님을 믿지 않자, 예수님께서 하실 수 있는 일이란 오직 세례자 요한이 세례를 베풀던 곳으로 물러가 힘을 돋우고 당신이 세례 받으실 때 하느님께서 하신 말씀, “너는 내가 사랑하는 아들, 내 마음에 드는 아들이다.”(루카 3,22)라는 말씀을 되새기는 것이었습니다.
예수님께서 아버지 안에 계시고 아버지께서 예수님 안에 계시다는 진리는, 이해하기 어려운 만큼 우리 구원의 핵심을 이룹니다. 그것은, 우리가 십자가를 바라볼 때면 단지 거기에 못 박혀 죽은 나자렛 예수라는 한 남자를 보는 것이 아니라, 우리를 위해 목숨을 버리신, 하느님의 영원한 아들이자 아버지의 전지전능하신 말씀을 본다는 것을 의미합니다. 그러한 희생으로 우리의 구원이 완전하고 영원하게 되었습니다. 우리는 다름 아닌 바로 하느님에 의해 구원되었습니다! 다른 일이 더 필요하지도 않고, 아무것도 또 아무도 그것을 우리에게서 빼앗아 가지 못합니다.
우리는 이 위대한 진리를 가슴에 품고, 하느님 앞에서 굳건한 믿음을 가질 수 있습니다. 우리는 죄를 지어도 회개하면서 그분께 돌아갈 수 있으며, 또한 용서받는다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 이는 이미 십자가에서 주어진 것이기 때문입니다. 우리는 하느님에게서 숨거나 진노를 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 태초부터 그분께서는 우리 마음 가장 깊숙한 곳의 생각과 약함을 다 아시면서도 당신의 아드님을 보내기로 하셨던 것입니다. 그리고 그 아드님께서 십자가에서 돌아가신 순간부터, 하느님께서는 예수님 안에서 온 세상을 당신과 화해하게 하십니다.(2코린 5,19) 이렇게 놀라웁게 구원되었는데, 어찌 우리가 하느님을 의심할 수 있겠습니까?
“주 예수 그리스도님, 당신을 찬양합니다!
하느님의 자비이신 분,
당신의 십자가 희생을 찬미드리오니,
당신은 십자가 희생으로 우리를 구원하시고
끊임없이 악에서 구하십니다.
그토록 위대한 구원 사업을 이루신 아버지,
당신께 감사드립니다.”
