As we marvel at the story of Gabriel's proclamation to Mary, one thing we might wonder is, "Why was Mary "greatly troubled" at the angel's words?"(Luke 1:29). Again, when Gabriel told Mary that she was to bear the Son of God, why did she ask, "How can this be"(1:34) After all, she was completely free from the influence of sin. Why should there be any pause at all between the angel's announcement and her obedient response?
We could say in reply that Mary was only human, and had to admit she couldn't comprehend such a great mystery without a little help. That sounds very much like our response to God as well, doesn't it? We have all received an "annunciation". We've all been told to proclaim the gospel, yet so often we ask in return, "How can this be? I am only a homemaker, or an accountant, or a teacher. I don't know anything about God. How can I bring him into my situation?"
How can this be? In just the same way that Mary brought Jesus into the world: through the power of the Most High. We cannot bring Jesus to others by ourselves; without the Lord, we can do nothing at all (John 15:5). Thankfully, this miracle of grace has already been accomplished for us; it's been worked in us by the Holy Spirit, and by virtue of our baptism, we're already bringing Jesus with us wherever we go. That's something we should just stop and be amazed at we carry with us the presence of the living God!
Of course, unlike Mary, we do have the tendency to sin. Sometimes it seems we spend more of our journey with the Lord falling down than actually walking! But at those times, instead of getting caught up in our frailty, we should remember who we are. We are children of the Father; we have been given power to be victorious over "all the power of the enemy"(Luke 10:19). As long as we stay close to Jesus, there is nothing that can hurt us. We can do more than just stay out of trouble. We can fulfill the mission Mary began at Nazarethto "give light to those who sit in darkness"(Luke 1:79).

우리는 가브리엘 천사가 마리아에게 예수님의 탄생을 예고하는 이 이야기를 경이롭게 들으면서, 이런 의문 하나가 들 것입니다. “왜 마리아는 천사의 말에 ‘몹시 놀라워’ 했을까?”(루카 1,29) 또, 가브리엘이 마리아에게 그녀가 하느님의 아들을 낳게 될 것이라고 말했을 때, 그녀는 왜 “어떻게 그런 일이 있을 수 있겠습니까?”(1,34)라고 물었을까요? 어쨌거나 그녀는 죄의 영향을 완전히 벗어나 있었는데, 천사의 예고를 듣고서 여기에 순종하는 대답을 하기까지 왜 그렇게 뜸을 들여야 했을까요?
여기에 대한 답은, 마리아도 한낱 인간이었고 그런 위대한 신비를 아무런 도움도 없이 이해하기 어렵다는 것을 인정할 수밖에 없었다는 것이겠지요. 그 말은 우리가 하느님께 대답할 때 드리는 말과 참 많이 닮지 않았나요? 우리는 모두 이런 ‘예고’를 받았지요. 누구나가 복음을 선포하라는 말을 들었지만, 이렇게 대답할 때가 아주 많습니다. “어떻게 그럴 수 있겠습니까? 나는 그저 주부일 뿐, 아니면 회계사, 혹은 교사일 뿐인걸요. 나는 하느님에 대해 아무것도 모르는데, 어떻게 내 주제에 하느님을 얘기할 수 있겠습니까?”
어떻게 그런 일이 있을 수 있냐고요? 바로 성모님께서 예수님을 이 세상에 모셔온 것과 같은 방식으로 하면 됩니다. 지극히 높으신 분의 권능으로 말입니다. 우리는 혼자 힘만으로는 다른 이들에게 예수님을 전하지 못합니다. 주님 없이는 아무것도 하지 못합니다.(요한 15,5) 고맙게도 그런 은총의 기적은 우리에게 이미 이루어졌습니다. 성령에 의해, 그리고 세례성사 덕분에 그 일은 우리 안에서 일어났고, 우리는 어디를 가든 이미 예수님을 모시고 다니는 것입니다. 이야말로 하던 일을 딱 멈추고 놀라워할 일이 아닙니까? 살아 계신 하느님의 현존을 우리 안에 모시고 다니다니요!
물론 성모님과 달리 우리는 죄를 짓는 성향이 있습니다. 때로는 주님과의 여정을, 실제로 앞으로 걸어나가기보다는 넘어지면서 더 많이 보내는 것 같습니다! 하지만 그러한 때에도 우리의 나약함에 사로잡히기보다는 우리가 누구인지를 되새겨야 할 것입니다. 우리는 하느님 아버지의 자녀이므로, “원수의 모든 힘”(루카 10,9)에 대항해서 승리할 힘을 부여받았다는 것을 말입니다. 우리가 예수님 곁에 머무는 한, 아무것도 우리를 다치게 할 수 없습니다. 게다가 그저 고난을 피하는 정도가 아니라, 그 이상의 일을 할 수 있습니다. 성모님께서 나자렛에서 시작하신, “어둠의 그늘에 앉아 있는 이들을 비추시는”(루카 1,79) 사명을 완수할 수 있는 것입니다.

당신을 선포할 수 있다면 좋겠습니다!
당신의 어머니, 성모님의 평화와 권능으로
제가 주님을 다른 이들에게 전하게 해 주세요!” |
