Like the Israelites in exile, we too are strangers in a foreign land. As Christians with an eternal calling, we don't quite belong in this world. Neither are we at home yet with the Lord. At times we can think that God is too far off to hear our prayers. Sometimes we imagine that he is occupied with weightier matters, or that he might answer us if we were only a little bit holier. But today's reading boldly reminds us that God does desire to answer our prayers and console us in our uncertainty. A time of salvation is coming, and the mighty Lord will come to our aid.
In Jesus, we see these promises completely fulfilled. Through a new covenant in his blood, we have access to Almighty God. Not only does our Father hear and answer us, his answer exceeds all we ever dared hope for. What is that answer? Freedom from isolation. Freedom from the fear of rejection especially the fear that God himself has rejected or forgotten us. "Can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you"(Isaiah 49:15).
Contrary to everything this world tells us, our God is full of compassion and loves to comfort us. He simply will not abandon his people; they are far too close to his heart. Neither can he deny those whom others have rejected. To those imprisoned by isolation, he says, "come out!" To those groping in darkness: "show yourselves!"(Isaiah 49:9). The more broken we feel, the more intensely does Jesus pour love upon us. There is no place so low that he will not come to meet us there!
No matter what your situation may be, Jesus has promised you eternal life if only you try to remain in him. As a guarantee of this promise, he has poured his Spirit into your heart. How could he desert you, now that you have become his child? You are precious to him, and he will never stop loving you. He longs to be close to you, and he is reaching out to you in a thousand ways each day. Don't depend on what you can seejust depend on him!

유배지의 이스라엘 백성처럼 우리도 역시 낯선 땅에 와서 살고 있는 이방인입니다. 우리는 영생의 부르심을 받은 그리스도인으로서, 이 세상에 완전히 속하지 않습니다. 또 아직 주님과 함께 고향에 머물지도 못합니다. 우리는 때로 하느님께서 너무나 멀리 계셔서 우리의 기도를 듣지 못하신다고 생각합니다. 또 때로는 주님께서는 보다 중대한 문제에 여념이 없으신 거라고, 혹은 우리가 조금만 더 거룩하면 기도를 들어주실 거라고 생각합니다. 그러나 우리는 오늘의 독서를 통해, 하느님께서는 간절히 우리의 기도에 응답하고 우리의 불안함을 위로하고 싶어하심을 분명하게 되새길 수 있습니다. 구원의 때가 오고 있으니 전능하신 하느님께서는 우리를 도우러 오실 것입니다.
우리는 이 약속들이 예수님을 통해 이루어졌음을 알 수 있습니다. 예수님의 피로 맺은 새로운 계약을 통하여, 우리는 전능하신 하느님께 갈 수 있게 되었습니다. 우리의 아버지께서는 우리의 기도를 듣고 그저 거기에 대답하실 뿐만 아니라, 우리가 감히 희망해 온 모든 것을 능가하는 응답을 주십니다. 그 응답이 무엇일까요? 고립에서의 해방입니다. 즉 배척받을 두려움, 특히 하느님께서 우리를 내치시거나 잊으시지는 않을까 하는 두려움에서 벗어나는 것입니다. “여인이 제 젖먹이를 잊을 수 있느냐? 제 몸에서 난 아기를 가엾이 여기지 않을 수 있느냐? 설령 여인들은 잊는다 하더라도 나는 너를 잊지 않는다.”(이사 49,15)
이 세상이 우리에게 떠들어대는 것과는 대조적으로, 하느님께서는 연민으로 가득하시고 우리를 위로하기 원하십니다. 주님께서는 절대로 당신의 백성을 버리지 않으실 것입니다. 그러시기에는 그들이 너무나도 당신의 마음 가까이에 있습니다. 또한 다른 사람들이 내친 이들도 거절하실 수 없습니다. 주님께서는 고립되어 갇힌 이들에게는 “나와라!” 하시고, 어둠 속에서 헤매는 이들에게는 “모습을 드러내어라!”(이사 49,9) 하셨습니다. 우리가 낙담하면 할수록, 주님께서는 더 많은 사랑을 우리에게 부어 주십니다. 주님께서 우리를 만나러 오실 수 없을 만큼 너무 낮은 자리란 없습니다!
당신이 어떤 처지에 있든 예수님께 머물고자 노력하기만 한다면, 예수님께서는 당신에게 영원한 생명을 주겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 그리고 그 약속의 보장으로 그분의 성령을 당신 마음에 불어넣어 주셨습니다. 이제 그분의 자식이 된 당신을 어떻게 버리실 수 있겠습니까? 당신은 주님께 소중한 존재이며, 주님께서는 당신을 끝없이 사랑하실 것입니다. 주님께서는 당신 옆에 있고 싶어하시고, 날마다 온갖 방법을 다하여 당신에게 닿으려고 하십니다. 눈에 보이는 것에 기대지 마십시오. 그저 주님께만 기대십시오!

제가 믿음의 길을 갈 수 있도록,
또 제가 가는 길에 항상 당신이 함께 하심을
