"All who humble themselves will be exalted."(Luke 18:14)
Young Patrick had plenty of reasons to exalt himself. Although kidnapped as a teenager by slave traders and taken to a foreign land, he made a daring escape and, with the help of God, returned safe and sound to his home and family. He rightfully could have enjoyed fame as a local hero, turning his back on the harrowing experiences of his youth.
But when a voice with an Irish tone called to Patrick in a dream, pleading that he return and walk among them once more, he answered wholeheartedly. Instead of turning his back on the pagans who had abducted and mistreated him, he prepared himself to return to them and bring them the gospel. Instead of thanking God that he was not like those other men, he was able to identify with them and to live among them. And in so doing, he was more free to become an effective means of reconciliation and salvation.
We may be inspired by Saint Patrick's example, but we may also find it helpful to ask if there are any ways that we subtly take the attitude of the Pharisee in Jesus' parable. When we intercede, do we hold ourselves aloof from those whose sins seem so grave to us? Do we look down on those who are less fortunate, or those who have made unwise choices? Do we consider ourselves better than those who don't know Jesus? The truth is that even if our sins aren't the same, we are all still sinners, made of the same frail humanity as those who seem to have fallen so far from God.
Just as the publican begged God for mercy, we too should beg God for mercy; but not just for ourselves, so that we can go home justified. Let's beg God to have mercy on all humanity! Like St. Patrick, let's reach out to people beyond the circle of our own friends, walking among them and bringing God's mercy and reconciliation.

that you have been so merciful to me.
Make me a channel of that mercy
to everyone I will encounter today.
Let me be humble so that
your reconciliation can flow through me!"

“누구든지 자신을 높이는 이는 낮아지고 자신을 낮추는 이는 높아질 것이다.”(루카 18,14)
아일랜드의 수호성인인 성 파트리치오는 젊은 날을 의기양양하게 보낼 만했습니다. 십대에 노예상인에게 유괴되어 외국으로 끌려갔으나 용감하게 달아나 하느님의 도우심으로 무사히 건강하게 고향의 가족들 품으로 돌아왔으니까요. 그는 어린 시절의 쓰라린 경험을 뒤로 한 채, 그 지방의 영웅 행세를 하며 즐겁게 살 수도 있었습니다.
그러나 그는 꿈을 꾸던 중, 아일랜드 억양의 목소리가 그에게 자기들에게로 돌아와서 함께 있어 달라고 간청하는 소리를 들었을 때, 이에 온 마음으로 응답하였습니다. 자신을 유괴하고 유린한 이교도에게서 등을 돌리지 않고 그들에게로 돌아가 복음을 전파할 채비를 하였습니다. 그는 자신이 이 이방인들과 다르다는 걸 하느님께 감사하기보다는, 자신을 그들과 동일시하며 그들 가운데에서 함께 살 수 있었습니다. 그리고 그렇게 함으로써, 더욱 자유롭게 화해와 구원을 이루는 데에 유용한 도구가 될 수 있었습니다.
우리는 파트리치오 성인이 보여 준 모범을 보고 감명받을 수도 있지만, 또한 예수님의 비유에 나오는 바리사이와 같은 태도를 나도 모르게 취한 적은 없었는지 자문해 보는 것도 좋습니다. 우리는 다른 이들을 위해 기도할 때, 우리가 보기에 중대한 죄를 지은 사람들을 우리 자신과 별개로 놓고 보는가? 불운한 사람들이나 현명치 못한 판단을 한 사람들을 경멸하는가? 예수님을 모르는 사람들보다 우리가 더 나은 사람들이라고 생각하는가? 진실은, 우리의 죄가 비록 똑같지는 않다 해도 우리는 누구나 여전히 죄인이며, 하느님에게서 아주 멀리 떨어진 것처럼 보이는 사람들과 마찬가지로 나약한 인간성을 가지고 있다는 것입니다.
세리가 하느님께 자비를 구하였듯이, 우리도 하느님께 자비를 구해야 합니다. 하지만 단지 우리가 떳떳하게 본향으로 갈 수 있도록 하는, 우리만을 위한 기도가 아닙니다. 모든 인류에게 자비를 베풀어 주시기를 하느님께 간구합시다! 우리도 파트리치오 성인처럼, 우리에게 우호적인 이들의 테두리를 넘어서 다른 이들과 함께 걸으며 그들에게 하느님의 자비와 화해를 가져다 줍시다.

“하늘에 계신 아버지,
제게 그토록 자비로우심에 감사드립니다.
제가 오늘 만나는 모든 이에게
당신의 그 자비를 전하는 통로가
되게 해 주십시오. 당신의 화해와 일치가
저를 통하여 흘러넘칠 수 있도록
저를 겸손하게 만들어 주십시오!”
