"Take with you words and return to the Lord, say to him."(Hosea 14:3)
So counseled the prophet Hosea. What words should the Israelites take with them? Words of repentance pleading for God's mercy. With disastrous results, the Israelites had counted on foreign allies to save them; now they had returned to Yahweh, expressing their trust in God alone.
What "words" shall I take with me? What words express my heart's cry to the Father and will help me remain in his love? What words will shape my response to the challenges I will encounter today? The possibilities are endless. Perhaps it is a simple acclamation, like the dying man who whispered "Jesus" over and over again. Perhaps it is the tax collector's prayer: "God, be merciful to me, a sinner"(Luke 18:13). Perhaps it is the statement of faith: "God loves me," or the declaration in response: "I love you, Lord!" Perhaps it is not a word at all but an image: light flooding into darkness, a flower bud poised to open, or an image of God as a refreshing dew for his people (Hosea 14:5-7).
Where will we find such words? They may come to us during the time we set aside for prayer. Perhaps a line from Scripture resonates in a special way. Perhaps a hymn comes unexpected to our lips.
Perhaps we are not so inspired during our formal prayer time. Still, if we remain alert, the Holy Spirit will bring a word to our attention during the day. It may come through God's creation, through our own thoughts, or through something another person says. Wherever it comes from, receive this gift, and take it with you through the rest of the day. Expect the Spirit to keep unfolding what it means and how it applies.
Today's word may be very striking, but it will seldom be a "new" idea. The scribe who questioned Jesus in today's Gospel about which commandment is "the first of all" (Mark 12:28) was very familiar with the Scriptures with which Jesus answered him. What he lacked wasn't knowledge but power to live it out. We don't have to run after novel ideas. The Holy Spirit is more than eager to enliven us to live the truth we already know.

Please give me a word
to carry me through today
on the crest of your love."

“너희는 말씀을 받아들이고 주님께 돌아와 아뢰어라.”(호세 14,3)
호세아 예언자는 이렇게 충고하였습니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 어떤 말씀을 받아들여야 하겠습니까? 주님의 자비를 간청하는 회개의 말입니다. 그들은 동맹국이 자신들을 구해주리라고 믿고 따랐다가 끔찍한 결과를 맞이하였습니다. 이제 그들은 하느님께 돌아와 그분만 믿겠다고 고백합니다.
우리는 어떤 ‘말씀’을 받아들여야 할까요? 무슨 말로 아버지께 우리의 마음 속 외침을 보여 드려야 당신의 사랑을 계속해서 받을 수 있을까요? 무슨 말을 해야 오늘 내가 겪게 될 도전에 대한 응답을 표현할 수 있을까요? 할 수 있는 말은 수도 없이 많습니다. 어쩌면 죽어가는 사람이 “예수님” 하면서 자꾸만 되뇌는 것처럼 짧은 외침일 수도 있고, 세리의 기도처럼 “오, 하느님! 이 죄인을 불쌍히 여겨 주십시오.”(루카 18,13)라고 하면 될지도 모르죠. 혹은 “하느님은 저를 사랑하십니다.”라고 하는 신앙 고백일 수도 있고, “사랑합니다, 주님!” 하는 응답일 수도 있습니다. 어쩌면 말이라기보다는 그저 이미지일 수도 있지요. 어둠 속으로 흘러드는 빛일 수도 있고, 피어나는 꽃봉오리일 수도 있고, 당신 백성에게 생기를 주는 이슬 같은 하느님의 모습일 수도 있습니다.(호세 14,5-7)
어디서 그런 말을 찾을까요? 기도하려고 따로 마련해 둔 시간에 생각이 날 수도 있고, 특별히 감명을 주는 성경의 한 구절일 수도 있습니다. 어쩌면 생각지 않게 입에서 흘러나오는 성가일 수도 있고요.
아마 예식 기도 중에는 그다지 영감을 받지 않을 수도 있습니다. 그래도 우리가 깨어 있다면, 성령께서는 낮에도 우리가 할 말을 일깨워 주실 것입니다. 하느님의 창조물을 통하여, 우리 자신의 생각을 통하여, 혹은 다른 사람이 하는 말을 통하여 그 말은 우리에게 전해질 수 있습니다. 그 말이 어디에서 오든 그 선물을 받아서, 온종일 그 말을 지니고 다니십시오. 성령께서 그 뜻이 무엇인지, 그것을 어떻게 적용할지 알려 주시기를 바라십시오.
오늘의 말씀은 무척 인상적이기는 하지만, ‘새로운’ 생각이랄 것은 거의 없습니다. 오늘의 복음에서 예수님께 “모든 계명 가운데에서 첫째 가는 계명”은 무엇이냐고 물은 율법 학자는(마르 12,28), 예수님께서 대답에 쓰신 성경 내용을 이미 아주 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그에게 필요한 것은 인생을 살아가는 데 필요한 지식이 아니라, 살아갈 힘이었던 것입니다. 숭고한 생각을 좇으려 굳이 애쓸 필요가 없습니다. 성령께서는 우리가 이미 알고 있는 진리를 살아가도록 우리에게 힘을 불어넣어 주시기를 간절히 원하십니다.

“성령님, 제게 하시는 말씀을
소중히 간직하겠습니다.
주님 사랑의 절정에서 오늘 하루를
살아갈 말씀을 저에게 일러 주십시오.”
