In addition to telling the story of a Jewish girl who became Queen of Persia at a pivotal point in Israel's history, the Book of Esther gives some beautiful examples of intercessory prayer. According to the story, the Jews faced extermination by King Ahasuerus and one of his government officials, Haman. As queen, Esther herself was not in any danger. Indeed, the safest thing she could do was to lay low and let events take their course. But the welfare of her people weighed so heavily on her that she risked her life to try to save her people from destruction.
Recognizing God as the only source of help, Esther entrusted her life to him and interceded humbly on behalf of her people. She surrendered herself to God and to his will because she knew that ultimately he, not Ahasuerus, was the real King.
Before entering her husband's court to plead on behalf of her people, Esther asked God to give her wise and persuasive words. Persian law, simply to enter the king's presence without having been summoned could mean death. But after praying, Esther walked boldly (and somewhat fearfully) into the throne room. Because God had paved the way for her, the king's heart was softened, and he welcomed her. Then, when Esther begged him to deliver her people, and he granted her request. The Jewish people were spared.
The Book of Esther teaches an important lesson. We are all called to be like Esther. God calls all of us to intercede for the people around us. He invites us to align our thoughts and desires with his, and to love his plans and purposes more than our own. God loves it when we intercede for others. As Jesus told his disciples, "If you … who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!"(Matthew 7:11). If, like Queen Esther, we come with humble hearts and seek God's will, our prayers can be answered in astounding ways.

"Heavenly Father,
thank you for enabling me to pray for others.
Trusting that you always give good gifts
to your children,
I surrender my life and desires
into your hands."

에스테르기는 이스라엘 역사상 아주 중대한 시기에 페르시아의 왕비가 된 유다 처녀의 이야기 외에도, 그녀가 하느님께 바친 아름다운 전구기도의 표본을 보여 줍니다. 이야기에 따르면, 유다인들은 크세르크세스 왕과 그의 대신 하만에게 전멸당할 위험에 처해 있었다고 합니다. 왕비인 에스테르 본인에게는 위험할 게 아무것도 없었습니다. 정말이지 그런 경우 그녀가 할 수 있는 가장 안전한 일은 사건이 수그러질 때까지 몸을 낮추고 관망하는 것이었겠지요. 그러나 자기 민족의 안녕을 걱정하느라 마음이 무겁게 짓눌린 에스테르는 목숨을 걸고 그들을 파멸에서 구하기 위해 애를 씁니다.
에스테르는 하느님만이 유일하게 도움을 주실 분임을 고백하면서, 자신의 생명을 그분께 의탁하며 자기 민족을 위해 간절한 전구의 기도를 올렸습니다. 그녀는 하느님과 그분의 뜻에 자신을 송두리째 내맡겼습니다. 진정한 임금은 크세르크세스가 아니라 결국 하느님이심을 알고 있었으니까요. 
에스테르는 유다 민족의 이름으로 간청을 올리러 남편의 궁궐로 들어가기 전에, 주님께 지혜롭고 설득력 있는 말을 입에 담아 주시라고 간청했습니다. 당시 페르시아 법은 출두 명령을 받지 않고 임금 앞에 들어오면 죽게 되어 있었습니다. 그럼에도 에스테르는 하느님께 기도를 올린 다음 대담하게(조금은 두려워하며) 임금의 방으로 들어갔습니다. 하느님께서 그녀의 길을 닦아주셨기에 임금은 마음이 부드러워져 그녀를 맞이했습니다. 그러고서 에스테르가 임금에게 유다 민족을 구해 달라고 간청하자 임금은 그녀의 청을 흔쾌히 들어주었고, 그렇게 하여 유다 민족은 화를 면하게 되었습니다. 
에스테르기는 우리에게 중요한 교훈을 줍니다. 우리 모두도 에스테르처럼 살라고 부름 받았다는 것입니다. 하느님께서는 우리에게 주위 사람들을 위해 전구하라고 촉구하십니다. 우리의 생각과 소망을 주님의 생각과 소망에 맞추고, 주님의 계획과 목적을 우리 자신의 계획과 목적보다 더 사랑하고 소중히 여기라고 권유하십니다. 하느님께서는 우리가 다른 사람들을 위해 기도할 때 매우 흡족해하십니다. 예수님께서 말씀하셨지요. “너희가 악해도 자녀들에게는 좋은 것을 줄 줄 알거든, 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께서야 당신께 청하는 이들에게 좋은 것을 얼마나 더 많이 주시겠느냐?”(마태 7,11) 에스테르 왕비처럼 겸손한 마음으로 하느님의 뜻을 구할 때, 우리의 기도는 놀라운 방식으로 응답받을 것입니다.

“거룩하신 아버지,
제가 다른 사람들을 위해 기도할 수 있게
해 주시니 감사드립니다.
자녀들에게 항상 좋은 것을 주시는
주님을 신뢰하며 저의 삶과 소망을
주님 손에 맡겨드립니다.”
