37 In the historical conditions in which he finds himself, however, man experiences many difficulties in coming to know God by the light of reason alone:

 

Though human reason is, strictly speaking, truly capable by its own natural power and light of attaining to a true and certain knowledge of the one personal God, who watches over and controls the world by his providence, and of the natural law written in our hearts by the Creator; yet there are many obstacles which prevent reason from the effective and fruitful use of this inborn faculty. For the truths that concern the relations between God and man wholly transcend the visible order of things, and, if they are translated into human action and influence it, they call for self-surrender and abnegation. The human mind, in its turn, is hampered in the attaining of such truths, not only by the impact of the senses and the imagination, but also by disordered appetites which are the consequences of original sin. So it happens that men in such matters easily persuade themselves that what they would not like to be true is false or at least doubtful.!

37 한편 인간이 처한 역사적 조건들 안에서 이성의 빛만으로 하느님을 인식하기에는 어려움이 많다.

간단히 말해서, 실제로 인간 이성이 자신의 타고난 능력과 빛으로써, 당신 섭리로 세상을 보호하고 다스리시는 인격적인 하느님과, 창조주께서 우리 영혼 안에 심어 놓으신 자연법에 대한 참되고 확실한 인식에 도달할 수 있기는 하지만, 이러한 본성적 능력을 효과적으로 사용하여 결과를 얻기에는 많은 장애가 있습니다. 왜냐하면 하느님과 인간의 관계에 대한 진리들은 감각적인 사물들의 질서를 완전히 넘어서는 것이며, 이러한 진리들이 구체적인 행동에 적용되고 삶을 형성하게 될 때에는 자기를 바치고 포기할 것을 요구하기 때문입니다. 이 같은 진리들을 얻기 위해서 인간의 정신은 감각과 상상력의 충동뿐 아니라, 원죄에서 발생한 그릇된 욕망들로 어려움을 겪습니다. 이 때문에 인간은 이러한 일들에서, 스스로 사실이 아니기를 바라는 것들이 거짓이거나 적어도 불확실한13) 것이라고 쉽게 믿어 버립니다.
