In Abram's time, a solemn contract was sealed using sacrificial animals. Instead of signing an agreement, each party walked between the carcasses of the animals to signify that if he failed to uphold his end of the bargain, he deserved the same fate as those animals.
In today's passage, much more than a contract is at stake. God does make specific promises to Abram: that this childless old man will have innumerable descendants, and that he will possess the land on which he is a squatter. But something far more basic is happening here. By passing between the animals as a flaming torch, God is entering into a permanent relationship with Abram and his descendants, a relationship of love and fidelity.
"I will maintain my covenant with you and your descendants after you throughout the ages as an everlasting pact, to be your God and God of your descendants after you" (Genesis 17:7). Hundreds of years later, under Moses, the same covenant is ratified at Sinai: "If you hearken to my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people" (Exodus 19:5).
And what has happened throughout the long history of Israel, carried forward into the ongoing story of the church? We have failed to uphold our end of the bargain. Yet, instead of punishing us, God went ahead and sacrificed himself for our salvation! God still stands by his covenant. He continues to be our God even when we turn a deaf ear to him and go our own way.
God's promises to us are many. "I am with you always" (Matthew 28:20). "If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing" (1 John 1:9). "God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son"(1 John 5:11). "God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength" (1 Corinthians 10:13).
We can rely on these promises, because by our baptism we have entered into a far more fundamental covenant. We are incorporated into the very body of Christ himself!

"Father, your love for me
is eternal and unconditional.
You have never failed to stand by me.
Even though I don't deserve it,
help me to trust you and build my life
on your faithfulness."

아브람의 시대에는 엄숙한 계약을 맺을 때는 희생 동물을 사용하였습니다. 계약서에 서명을 하는 대신, 그 계약이 파기된다면 희생된 짐승과 똑같은 운명에 처하게 됨을 보여 주기 위해서 양측 사람은 죽은 짐승들 사이를 걸어갔던 것이지요.
오늘의 말씀에는 계약 이상의 것이 걸려 있습니다. 하느님께서는 아브람에게 특별한 약속을 하십니다. 자식이 없던 이 노인에게 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 후손이 생길 것이며, 그가 가축을 치는 땅을 소유하게 될 것이라고 말이지요. 그런데 이보다 훨씬 더 근원적인 일이 여기에서 일어납니다. 하느님께서 타오르는 횃불이 되어 짐승들 사이를 지나시면서, 아브람과 그의 자손들과 영원한 관계, 사랑과 충성의 관계를 맺으십니다.
“나는 나와 너 사이에, 그리고 네 뒤에 오는 후손들 사이에 대대로 내 계약을 영원한 계약으로 세워, 너와 네 뒤에 오는 후손들에게 하느님이 되어 주겠다.”(창세 17,7) 수백 년이 지난 후 모세 때에, 바로 그 계약이 시나이 산에서 다시 확인되었습니다. “이제 너희가 내 말을 듣고 내 계약을 지키면, 너희는 모든 민족들 가운데에서 나의 소유가 될 것이다.”(탈출 19,5)
그리고 교회로 넘어와 계속 이어져 온 이스라엘의 긴 역사를 통틀어 어떤 일이 일어났습니까? 우리는 계약을 끝까지 지키지 못했습니다. 그런데도 하느님께서는 우리를 벌하시기는커녕, 우리를 구원하시고자 앞질러 가시어 당신 자신을 희생 제물로 바치셨습니다! 하느님께서는 여전히 당신의 계약을 지키고 계신 거지요. 주님께서는 우리가 주님의 목소리에 귀를 막고 자기만의 길을 가는데도 계속해서 우리의 하느님으로 남아 계십니다.
하느님께서는 우리에게 많은 것을 약속하셨습니다. “내가 언제나 너희와 함께 있겠다.”(마태 28,20) “우리가 우리 죄를 고백하면, 그분은 성실하시고 의로우신 분이시므로 우리의 죄를 용서하시고 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 해 주십니다.”(1요한 1,9) “하느님께서 우리에게 영원한 생명을 주셨고 그 생명이 당신 아드님에게 있다는 것입니다.”(1요한 5,11) “하느님은 성실하십니다. 그분께서는 여러분에게 능력 이상으로 시련을 겪게 하지 않으십니다.”(1코린 10,13)
우리는 이 약속을 믿고 의지할 수 있습니다. 우리는 세례로써 훨씬 더 근원적인 계약을 맺었기 때문입니다. 우리는 바로 그리스도의 몸과 하나가 되었습니다!

“아버지, 저를 사랑하시는 아버지의 사랑은
영원하며 무조건적이어서,
한 번도 저를 떠나신 적이 없습니다.

제가 비록 부족하오나,
주님을 믿고 주님의 성실하심 위에
제 삶을 세울 수 있게 도와주십시오.”
