"Your Father who sees in secret will reward you." (Matthew 6:4)
It can be easy to miss the connection in today's Gospel between fasting, praying, and almsgiving on the one hand and the untold blessings that come from a generous Father. We tend to focus on what we must do and forget that God more than makes up for every sacrifice we make for him and his people. But the fact remains that living out Jesus' commands results in living in his abounding love.
Every era of church history produces new heroes and heroines of the faith: models of holiness whose lives prove Jesus' promises to be absolutely trustworthy. Each one of them­whether well-known or obscure­tells us how prayer and generosity open the door to the Father's love and enable us to live as we are called to be in Jesus.
One such model was Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Her service among the poorest of the poor in India inspired many people from all walks of life to do the same, whether in their own families and neighborhoods or in far-off mission lands. Her tireless, humble work showed a whole generation that when we think we are serving the poor, we are actually saving our own lives­and becoming richer in the process. When we care for those around us who have material poverty, we become spiritually enriched. When we feed the hungry, we come away satisfied. When we clothe the naked, bind up the wounded, or listen to the lonely, we touch Jesus himself. Ultimately, we find everything we have been looking for.
It is this attitude of spiritual generosity that sets us apart in a world that places so high a value on self-fulfillment. Mother Teresa knew that through prayer especially the Eucharist­love really could become the driving force of her life. And we can discover the same thing. Rather than worrying about how we could possibly give of our time and energy, let's go to the Father in prayer. He will show us what to do. And better still, he will give us the love to do it.

that you are never outdone in generosity.
Even my weakest efforts to worship
you can bring me closer to you.
Even my meager attempt to serve your people
brings awesome results.
Father, lead me in love today.
I want to be just like you."

“숨은 일도 보시는 네 아버지께서 너에게 갚아 주실 것이다.”(마태 6,4) 
오늘의 복음에서, 우리는 단식과 기도, 자선과, 다른 한편 자비로우신 아버지께서 주시는 무한한 복 사이의 연관성을 지나쳐 버리기 쉽습니다. 우리는 우리가 무엇을 해야 하는지에만 관심을 두고, 하느님이나 하느님 백성을 위해 우리가 바치는 희생마다 하느님께서 몇 배로 갚아 주신다는 사실은 잊는 경향이 있습니다. 그러나 예수님의 계명을 따라 사는 것이 그분의 넘치는 사랑 안에서 사는 결과를 낳는다는 사실에는 변함이 없습니다.
교회 역사를 보면 매시기마다 위대한 신앙 선조들이 새로이 탄생합니다. 예수님의 약속이 절대적으로 신뢰할 수 있는 것임을 자신들의 삶으로 증명한 거룩함의 전형이지요. 그들이 잘 알려진 분이든 그렇지 않든 간에, 우리가 어떻게 기도와 관용으로 하느님 아버지의 사랑으로 가는 문을 열게 되고 부르심 받은 대로 예수님 안에 머물면서 살게 되는지 그들 한분 한분의 삶에서 알 수 있습니다.
캘커타의 마더 데레사 복자는 바로 그러한 본보기 중의 한 분이시지요. 인도의 가난한 이들 중에서도 가장 가난한 사람들에게 바친 그녀의 삶을 보고, 각계의 많은 사람들이 가정과 이웃에서든, 멀리 떨어진 선교 지역에서든 그와 같은 삶을 살겠다고 고무되었습니다. 그분은 겸손하면서도 지칠 줄 모르게 일함으로써, 우리가 가난한 이들에게 봉사한다고 생각하지만 실은 우리 자신의 삶을 구원하고 그 과정에서 더 풍요한 삶을 가꾸는 것이란 사실을 모든 이들에게 보여 주었습니다. 물질적으로 가난한 이웃을 돌볼 때에 우리 자신이 영적으로 비옥해지고, 굶주린 사람을 먹일 때에 우리가 만족을 얻고 돌아갑니다. 헐벗은 사람을 입히고 다친 사람을 싸매 주고 외로운 사람의 말벗이 되어줄 때에 우리는 바로 예수님을 만나게 됩니다. 그래서 마침내는 우리가 찾아 헤매던 것들을 모두 발견하게 됩니다.
영적으로 자비로운 이런 태도는 자아실현에 높은 가치를 두는 이 세상에서 우리를 남과 다르게 구별 짓는 것입니다. 마더 데레사는 기도를 통해서, 특히 성체성사를 통해서 사랑이 진정 자신의 삶을 이끄는 원동력이 될 수 있음을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 우리도 이와 같은 깨달음을 얻을 수 있습니다. 우리의 시간과 노력을 어떻게 나누어 줄 수 있으려나 걱정하지 말고, 기도 중에 하느님 아버지께 나아갑시다. 그분께서 무엇을 할지 알려 주실 것이며, 게다가 더 좋은 것은 그 일을 하기 위한 사랑을 우리에게 주실 것입니다.

“하늘에 계신 아버지,
당신의 자비는 그 누구도 따를 수가 없으니
놀라울 뿐입니다. 주님을 찬양하려는 노력이
아무리 서툴러도 저를 당신께
더욱 가까이 이끄시고,
당신 백성을 섬기려는 시도가 아무리 미약해도
놀라운 결과를 가져다주십니다.
아버지, 오늘 사랑으로 저를 이끌어 주십시오.
저도 아버지처럼 되고 싶습니다.”
