In his day, Jesus was looked on as a radical. Many of the Pharisees, for instance, thought he was trying to destroy Judaism. But in reality, he wanted his people to get to the root of the commandments and traditions of Judaism, not dismiss them. That's why he told them that whoever is angry with his brother is like a murderer, just as one who looks lustfully has already committed adultery (Matthew 5:21-30). Still, his most surprising teaching of all was the command to love our enemies. That's about as far from "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" as you can get!
Even today, this is still a hard teaching. To love our enemy goes against our instincts. We want to retaliate and to be compensated for being violated. However, as Jesus' disciples, we cannot be content with what our instincts alone tell us. We cannot simply accept what the world defines as acceptable behavior!. No, we must try our best to live according to the commandment of love.
"Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matthew 5:48). We find it difficult to believe that perfection is possible, especially when it means laying down our differences and embracing people who rub us the wrong way. Why? Because we keep thinking that we have to do it by ourselves! We force ourselves to get along with someone who has hurt us, and we're surprised when it doesn't work. But can't we believe that God, who "makes his sun rise on the bad and the good," will make his grace rise in our hearts and empower us to love those who hate us?
This is why the gospel message is such good news. It is not just a message about sin and redemption. It is also a message of grace and divine power. It's a message about the Holy Spirit being poured into our hearts to help us take one step closer to perfection every day. God really does want to give us the power to overcome sin. He wants to give us the wisdom of Solomon and the patience of Job. He wants to give us the energy we need to be a light to the people around us. Jesus doesn't command impossibilities. He makes the impossible possible!

"Lord Jesus, fill me with your love,
a love that has no boundaries,
so that I may be perfect as you are perfect."

예수님께서는 그 당시 상당히 급진적인 사람으로 보였습니다. 가령, 바리사이 중 많은 이가 예수님이 유다이즘을 말살하려 하고 있다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 실제로 예수님께서는 당신 백성이 유다이즘의 계명과 전통의 근본을 잊는 것이 아니라 회복하기를 원하셨습니다. 음욕을 품고 바라보는 자는 이미 간음한 것과 같은 것처럼 자신의 형제에게 성을 내는 사람은 살인자와 같다고 예수님께서 말씀하신 것은 바로 그 때문이지요.(마태 5,21-30) 하지만 예수님의 가르침 중에서 가장 놀라운 것은 뭐니 뭐니 해도 원수를 사랑하라는 계명입니다. “눈은 눈으로, 이는 이로” 하는 식에서 얼마나 앞서 나간 이야기입니까!
이는 오늘날에도 여전히 어려운 가르침입니다. 원수를 사랑하는 것은 인간적인 본성과 대치되지요. 우리는 피해 입은 것에 대해 앙갚음하고 보상받고 싶어합니다. 그렇지만 예수님의 제자들처럼 우리 역시 오로지 본능이 시키는 바로만 만족할 수는 없습니다. 이 세상에서 용인되는 행동으로 규정한 것을 단순히 받아들일 수는 없습니다. 안 됩니다. 우리는 있는 힘껏 사랑의 계명을 따라 살도록 노력해야 합니다.
“하늘의 너희 아버지께서 완전하신 것처럼 너희도 완전한 사람이 되어야 한다.”(마태 5,48) 우리도 완전할 수 있다고 믿기란 참 어렵지요. 특히 그것이 사람 사이의 다른 점을 따지지 않고 우리를 잘못된 방법으로 애먹이는 사람들을 포용하는 것을 의미할 때는 더욱 그렇습니다. 왜 그럴까요? 그 일을 우리 자신의 힘으로 해야 한다는 생각을 버리지 못하기 때문입니다. 우리는 자신에게 상처를 준 사람과 어떻게든 잘 지내보려 애쓰다가 결국 실패하면 당황하곤 합니다. 하지만 “악인에게나 선인에게나 당신의 해가 떠오르게 하시는” 하느님께서 우리의 마음에 은총을 내리시어 우리를 미워하는 사람도 사랑할 수 있는 힘을 주시리라고 믿을 수는 없을까요?
복음 말씀이 기쁜 소식인 이유가 바로 이것입니다. 복음은 단지 죄와 구원의 메시지가 아니라 은총과 하느님의 권능에 대한 메시지이기도 합니다. 우리가 완전함을 향해 날마다 한 발짝씩 나아가도록 우리 마음에 쏟아부어지는 성령에 관한 메시지인 것입니다. 하느님께서는 진심으로 우리에게 죄를 이길 힘을 주고 싶어하십니다. 솔로몬의 지혜와 욥의 인내심도 주고 싶어하십니다. 주위 사람들을 밝히는 빛이 되는 데에 필요한 에너지를 주고 싶어하십니다. 예수님께서는 불가능한 일을 하라고 하지 않으십니다. 오히려 불가능한 것을 가능하게 만드십니다!

“주 예수님, 저를 주님 사랑으로,
끝닿은 데 없는 사랑으로 채우시어,
주님께서 완전하신 것처럼
저도 완전한 사람이 되게 해 주십시오.”
