Sin separates us from God. That‘s just flat-out, unchangeably true. It is also flat out, unchangeably true that we are all sinners (Romans 3:23). But before we throw our hands up in despair, perhaps we should read Sirach's words as if they were coming from the mouth of God.
I will provide a way back (Sirach 17:24). We don't have to figure out how to get out of the difficulties sin presents in our lives. We have only to turn back to him in our hearts and minds. We have only to tell him, "Lord, I want to live." He will show us where and how to start, perhaps even without our realizing it. I have seen your ways, he assures us, and I will heal you; I will lead you and comfort you (Isaiah 57:18).
Return to the Lord… and turn again (Sirach 17:25,26). We don't have to be perfect. If we were, Jesus's death was unnecessary. We simply have to confess our sin, and ask the Holy Spirit to teach us what pleases God. He will help us! And as often as you fall, get up again. God's love never ceases, and his mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22,23). Seek me and live, he invites (Amos 5:4).
Stand firm in the way I set before you. That way is the way of love. We were created to praise and glorify the Lord with our lives. When we stand firm, relying on his own power to sustain us, praise and love will flow from our hearts. In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength, he promises (Isaiah 30:15).
We all want forgiveness, but it's not just about pardon. Forgiveness is about God restoring us to the freedom he intended from the beginningthe freedom to love him and to serve his people. Clearly, no sin is so detestable that God will not forgive it. No distance from him is so remote that his love cannot span it. We are never so corrupt that he will not embrace us and show us mercy when we turn to him.
"Jesus, I want to come to you and live.
Show me the way,
so that I can return to you.
Free me to love you with my whole heart,
and help me to stand firm in you."

죄는 우리를 하느님과 갈라놓습니다. 이는 한 치도 틀림이 없는, 변함없는 진실입니다. 우리 모두가 죄인(로마 3,23)이라는 사실 또한 틀림없고 변하지 않는 진실입니다. 그렇다고 해서 절망하여 체념하기보다는, 집회서의 말씀을 하느님의 입에서 나오는 말씀으로 받아들이고 읽어보는 건 어떨까요.
“회개하는 이들에게는 돌아올 기회를 주겠다.”(집회 17,24) 우리는 죄가 빚어내는 삶의 곤경에서 어떻게 벗어날까 고심하지 않아도 됩니다. 다만 오롯한 마음과 생각으로 하느님께 돌아가, “주님, 저는 살고 싶습니다.”라고 말씀드리면 됩니다. 그분께서는 우리가 무엇을 어디서 어떻게 시작해야 할지를, 어쩌면 우리가 미처 깨닫지도 못하는 사이에 우리에게 보여 주실 것입니다. 주님께서는 단호히 말씀하십니다. “나는 너희의 길을 보았다. 나는 너희의 병을 고쳐 주고 너희를 인도하며 위로로 갚아 주리라.”(이사 57,18)
“주님께 돌아오고 … 불의에서 돌아서라.”(집회 17,25-26) 우리가 꼭 완벽한 사람이어야 하는 것은 아닙니다. 우리가 만일 완벽하다면, 예수님께서 돌아가실 필요도 없었겠지요. 우리는 단지 우리의 죄를 고백하고, 어떻게 하면 하느님을 기쁘게 해 드릴지 가르쳐 주십사 성령께 부탁하면 됩니다. 성령께서 도와주실 테니까요! 수없이 넘어지더라도 다시 일어나세요. 하느님의 자애는 다함이 없고, 그분의 자비는 아침마다 새롭습니다.(애가 3,22-23) 그분께서 우리를 부르십니다. “너희는 나를 찾아라. 그러면 살리라.”(아모 5,4)
“네 앞에 놓아준 길에 굳건히 서 있어라.” 그 길은 바로 사랑의 길입니다. 우리는 우리의 삶을 통해 주님을 찬양하고 주님께 영광을 드리기 위해 창조되었습니다. 우리를 지탱해 주시는 그분의 힘에 의지하며 꿋꿋이 서 있을 때 그분을 향한 찬미와 사랑이 우리 마음에서 솟구쳐 나올 것입니다. 주님은 이렇게 약속하십니다. “회개와 안정으로 너희가 구원을 받고 평온과 신뢰 속에 너희의 힘이 있다.”(이사 30,15)
우리는 누구나 용서를 바라지만, 이는 단지 죄를 사함 받는 문제만은 아닙니다. 용서는 하느님께서 애초부터 의도하신 자유, 그분을 사랑하고 그분의 백성을 섬기는 자유를 하느님께서 회복시켜 주시는 문제입니다. 분명히, 하느님께서 용서하지 않으실 정도로 혐오스런 죄는 없습니다. 하느님에게서 아무리 멀리 떨어져 있다 해도 그분의 사랑이 가 닿지 못할 만큼 먼 곳도 없습니다. 우리가 아무리 죄에 물들었다 해도, 주님께 돌아갈 때 그분께서 우리를 내치시고 자비를 외면하실 정도는 절대로 아닙니다.
“예수님, 저는 당신께로 나아가 살고 싶습니다.
저에게 길을 보여 주시어,
당신께 돌아갈 수 있게 해 주십시오.
온 마음으로 주님을 사랑하도록
저를 자유롭게 해 주시고,
당신 안에 굳건히 서 있게 도와주십시오.”
