Jesus has made us his friends. We aren't slaves, ordered to comply with the master's every desire. We are his friends, sharing a mutual trust and affection with him. Doesn't that make your heart skip? Jesus, sitting in heaven, chose to be friends with us. He chose to have an intimate relationship with us, one that will empower us to bear fruit that will last.
Lasting fruit this isn't an impossible goal, because Jesus, our friend, has given us access to his Father and all the resources of heaven. We can know God's will and his thoughts because Jesus shares them with us. And it's precisely because we can learn what God wants that we can have a lasting effect on the world. What's more, because Jesus has his Father's consent to give us whatever we ask in his name, we will always have whatever we need to become fruitful. This is a far cry from slaves fulfilling their master's whims. It's much more like loving collaboration!
The only condition Jesus makes is that we love one another. And the greatest way to love others is to lay down our lives for them (John 15:13). Now, few of us are actually going to die physically for someone else, but most of us have opportunities daily to practice this self-sacrificing love. We can die by not insisting on our own ideas in an argument, or by opting to watch a television show someone else chooses. Teens might give up some computer time to run a load of laundry for tired parents. Maybe we just take a few minutes to visit with someone who lives alone, or to cook a meal for a neighbor who is sick or has a newborn.
The truth is, ways to lay down our lives abound. Whatever strength, self-control, kindness, or patience we need, we have access to. All of the wisdom, understanding, discernment, and love we need is available to us simply for the asking, from the Father, through the Holy Spirit. This is how we bear fruit that will remain; this is how we love God and others.
"Thank you, Jesus,
for choosing me as your friend.
Pour your love into my heart
so that it overflows to those around me today.
I trust that you will give me
all the resources I need to bear fruit
that will last."
