Free Bread! Come and Eat!
What would you do if you saw these words on a sign in a bakery window? Wouldn't you want to be the first inside to get the bread just as it was coming out of the oven? What if you saw such a sign outside your church? It might seem a bit odd at first, but with just a little bit of pondering, you might break into a broad smile. It's true, after all: Jesus is constantly showering his people with bread from heaven­rich, satisfying, nutritious, spiritual food!
Just think: A moment does not go by without Mass being celebrated somewhere on this planet. That means that Jesus is always coming to his people­whether in word or sacrament­to heal, restore, and nourish them. He is always pouring out his strength, his joy, and his love, offering all of us a taste of the glory that awaits us in heaven.
But it's not just in the Eucharist that Jesus comes to us. In our moments of prayerful silence, our moments of joyous celebration, and our moments of deep sadness and need ­ he is there. In the world's most war-torn regions as well as in the places of peace and prosperity ­ he is there. In the loving embrace of a husband and wife, in the ministering touch of a father to his daughter, in the tears of a recent widow­still he is there.
St. Bernard of Clairvaux once encouraged his brothers to take delight in the name of Jesus, telling them that his name "is more than light, it is also food. Do you not feel greater strength as often as you remember it? What other name… can equal its power to refresh our harassed senses.… And where is the person who, terrified and trembling before impending danger, has not been suddenly filled with courage and rid of fear by calling on the strength of Jesus' name? Where is the man who, tossed on the rolling sea of doubt, did not quickly find certainty by the clarity of Jesus' name?" If this is what proclaiming Jesus' name can do for us, imagine what can happen when we receive his body and blood­or when we embrace his presence in our everyday lives!

our daily bread,
for without it we will perish."

빵을 공짜로 드립니다! 와서 드세요!
빵집 창문에 이런 표지가 붙어 있는 걸 보면 당신은 어떻게 하시겠습니까? 누구보다 먼저 들어가 오븐에서 갓 꺼낸 빵을 먹고 싶지 않을까요? 이런 표지가 성당 문에 붙어 있는 것을 본다면 어떻겠습니까? 처음엔 약간 이상해 보이겠지만, 조금만 깊이 생각하면 환한 미소를 짓게 될 것입니다. 어쨌든 그게 사실이니까요. 예수님께서는 하늘에서 당신 백성에게 계속해서 빵을 내려주고 계시니까요. 구수하고, 먹음직스럽고, 영양가 있는 영적 빵을 말이예요!
잠시 생각해 보세요. 한 순간도 끊이지 않고 지구 어디에선가는 미사가 봉헌되고 있다는 사실을요. 그것은 예수님께서 당신 백성을 치유하고, 회복시키고, 양육하시려고 말씀이나 성사를 통해 끊임없이 오고 계신다는 뜻입니다. 주님께서는 우리를 기다리고 있는 천상 영광의 맛을 보여 주시며, 당신의 힘, 당신의 기쁨, 그리고 당신의 사랑을 우리에게 늘 쏟아부어 주십니다.
그런데 예수님께서 우리에게 오시는 것은 단지 성체성사를 통해서만이 아닙니다. 고요히 기도를 바치는 중에, 흥겨운 축제의 순간에, 또한 깊은 슬픔과 역경의 시간에 우리를 찾아오십니다. 그분은 평화와 번영을 누리는 지역뿐만 아니라 세상에서 가장 참혹한 전쟁 피해지역에도 계십니다. 그분은 남편과 아내의 사랑스런 포옹 속에도 계시고, 딸을 보살피는 아버지의 손길에도 계시며, 얼마 전 남편을 잃은 여인의 눈물 속에도 계십니다.  
클레르보의 베르나르도 성인은 동료 수사들에게 다음과 같이 말하면서 예수님의 이름에서 기쁨을 얻으라고 격려한 적이 있습니다. 즉 예수님의 이름은 “빛 이상의 것이며, 또한 음식입니다. 당신은 예수님의 이름을 머리에 떠올릴 때마다 큰 힘이 솟구쳐 오름을 느끼지 않나요? 지쳐버린 우리의 감성에 생생한 활력을 불어넣어 줄 수 있는 힘이 주님의 이름 말고 어디에 있습니까? … 눈앞에 닥친 위험에 겁에 질려 떨다가 예수님 이름이 가진 힘을 청함으로써 용기를 얻고 두려움에서 벗어나지 않은 사람이 누가 있습니까? 요동치는 의심의 바다에 던져졌다가 예수님 이름이 가진 명료함으로 금세 확신을 되찾지 않은 사람이 어디에 있습니까? 예수님 이름을 선포하는 것만으로 우리에게 그런 일이 생긴다면, 그분의 살과 피를 받아먹을 때, 혹은 우리의 일상에서 현존하시는 그분을 맞아들일 때는 과연 어떤 일이 일어날지 한 번 상상해 보세요!

“하늘에 계시는 아버지,
저희에게 일용할 양식을
매일매일 내려 주세요.
그 양식이 없으면
저희는 살 수가 없을 테니까요.”
