What a night the apostles must have had! A fierce storm, crashing waves, and no land in sight. You can just imagine them bickering with each other, or maybe complaining about how they wished they were simply home safe in bedor at least on dry land! The fear in their hearts must have been like a heavy stone, weighing them down and convincing them that nothing but certain disaster lay ahead. This must have been one powerful storm! After all, these were experienced fishermen and sailors; yet they were petrified.
Then comes Jesus, walking on the water toward themand they are even more afraid. First a perilous sea, and now a ghostly visitation. Surely they were doomed!
But miraculously, the apostles did not continue in their fear. Jesus' simple words, "Do not be afraid," broke through their terror and restored them to their right minds (John 6:20). These words, spoken with great love, were all they needed to hear. Their fear was cast out immediately. He didn't even condemn them for their weak faith! Because Jesus spoke so comfortingly, they had no hesitations about letting him in the boat.
How often during our day do storms and waves swirl around us, and we are not even aware of Jesus standing in the midst of the chaos calling out, "Do not be afraid." All we need to do is to calm down just enough to let him come into our hearts. Then, like the apostles, we will quickly get to wherever we need to go (John 6:21).
When you think about it, the place the apostles were rowing toward was not the most import!ant thing. What was more was that they experienced Jesus wiping out all of their fear during the journey. Likewise, Jesus isn't asking for a dramatic "yes" from us. He is not looking for us to get to a certain "place" of deep and invincible faith. All he is looking for are the small choices we face every daythe little decisions to choose him over our fears and concerns. We'll arrive at our destination in due time, happy to have Jesus with us.
"Lord, I choose today to say 'yes'
to your call not to be afraid.
I trust that you will get me to
where I need to go
and that you will not abandon me.
Thank you, Jesus, for your faithfulness."

사도들에게 얼마나 고된 밤이었을까요! 폭풍우가 몰아치고 풍랑이 높게 이는데, 육지는 보이지 않습니다. 당신은 사도들이 서로 말다툼을 하는 모습이나, 차라리 집에서 안락한 잠자리에 들어 있거나 하다못해 뭍에라도 있었으면 얼마나 좋겠냐며 불만을 늘어놓는 모습을 머리에 그려볼 수 있겠지요! 그들은 무거운 돌덩이 같은 마음속 두려움에 짓눌려 자신들에게 보나마나 재앙이 닥칠 거라고 생각했을 게 틀림없습니다. 이야말로 거센 폭풍이 아니었겠어요! 어쨌거나 그들은 모두 노련한 어부요 뱃사람들이었는데도 꼼짝도 할 수 없었습니다.
그때 예수님께서 호수 위를 걸어 그들에게 가까이 다가오십니다. 이를 본 사도들은 더욱 두려워집니다. 처음엔 위험천만한 바다에, 이젠 유령까지 찾아오다니요. 그들은 죽을 게 뻔했습니다!
그런데 기적과도 같이 사도들은 더 이상 무서움에 떨지 않게 되었습니다. “두려워하지 마라.” 하신 예수님의 한 마디 말씀에 그들은 공포를 떨쳐 버리고 제 정신으로 돌아왔습니다.(요한 6,20) 그들에게는 지극한 사랑에서 우러나오는 그 한 마디 말씀이 필요했던 것입니다. 순식간에 모든 두려움이 말끔히 가셨습니다. 예수님께서는 그들의 약한 믿음을 꾸짖지도 않으셨습니다! 오히려 격려의 말씀을 해 주셨기에 그들은 주저하지 않고 예수님을 배 안으로 모셨습니다.
우리가 살아가는 동안에도 수없이 잦은 폭풍과 파도가 우리 주위를 엄습하지만, 우리는 그 혼돈의 한가운데 서서 “두려워하지 마라” 하며 외치시는 예수님을 알아 뵙지 못합니다. 우리가 할 일은 주님께서 우리 마음에 들어오시도록 마음을 차분히 가라앉히는 것입니다. 그러면 사도들처럼 우리도 어느새 우리가 가려는 곳에 가 닿을 것입니다.(요한 6,21)
생각해 보면, 가장 중요한 건 사도들이 배를 저어가는 목적지가 아니라, 항해 동안 그들에게서 모든 두려움을 몰아내시는 예수님을 체험한 일이었습니다. 마찬가지로, 예수님께서는 우리에게 극적인 ‘응답’을 요구하시는 것도 아니고, 이를 수 없는 깊은 신앙의 ‘경지’에 도달하기를 바라시는 것도 아닙니다. 그분께서 우리에게 기대하시는 것은 일상의 작은 선택, 곧 두려움과 걱정을 접고 그분을 선택하기로 하는 작은 결정들입니다. 그러면 우리도 제때에 우리의 목적지, 곧 예수님을 우리 곁에 모시는 행복에 도달할 것입니다.
“주님, 저는 오늘 ‘두려워하지 마라’라고
하시는 주님의 초대에 ‘예’ 하고 응답하렵니다.
주님께서 저를 저버리지 않으시며
목적지까지 데려다 주실 것을 믿습니다.
예수님, 당신의 신실하심에 감사드립니다.”
