Imagine being wrongfully imprisoned for two decades. Would you become bitter and hate-filled? But what if in prison your hatred melted away instead, and you began to feel truly free? So goes the story told in the film Hurricane, based on the life of middle-weight boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, who was falsely convicted of triple murder. "Hate put me in this prison," Carter once said, "but love busted me out." Carter admitted that his own hate and bitterness along with the hatred of those who had lied to keep him behind bars helped send him to prison in the first place. In time, however, Carter let love replace hate. As a result, he experienced inner freedom even before his conviction was overturned and he was released from prison.
In today's first reading, the apostles are also unjustly imprisoned, but God himself miraculously unlocks the doors. And what do they do upon their release? They return to the Temple and continue proclaiming the resurrection of Jesusthe very thing that got them arrested in the first place!
Upon his release, Hurricane Carter devoted his life to working for justice and reconciliation. Similarly, the apostles continued to devote themselves to serving the Lord and bringing his gospel to the world. This is what true freedom looks like. It's not the "freedom" to do whatever we want, whenever we want. As the Catechism teaches, "There is no true freedom except in the service of what is good and just. The choice to disobey and do evil is an abuse of freedom and leads to 'the slavery of sin'"(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1733).
Are there prison doors you feel trapped behind? For most of us, these doors aren't physical, but they're just as real. Often the biggest obstacles to freedom come from within ourselves our fear, anger or pride, for example. But don't give up hope! Don't stop believing! As he did for the apostles, God can open these prison doors and set you free!
God has a plan and a purpose for you to accomplish. You may not hear the voice of an angel, but the same message rings true: "Go… and tell the people everything" about what Jesus has done for you (Acts 5:20).
"Jesus, I lay my burdens at your feet.
I trust that you can and will set me free.
Come, Lord Jesus,
and loose my bonds!"

당신이 20년 동안 부당하게 감옥에 갇혀 있다고 상상해 보세요. 당신의 마음은 원한과 증오심으로 가득 차게 되겠지요? 그런데 그게 아니라 감옥 안에서 자기 안의 모든 증오심이 말끔히 가시고 진정한 자유를 느끼기 시작했다면 어떨까요? 세 명을 살해한 혐의로 기소된 미들급 권투선수 루빈 ‘허리케인’ 카터의 실화를 바탕으로 한 영화 ‘허리케인’의 줄거리가 바로 그렇습니다. 언젠가 카터는 이렇게 말했습니다. “증오심은 나를 감옥에 가두었지만, 사랑은 나를 감옥에서 풀어 주었다.” 카터는 다른 무엇보다도, 거짓증언으로 그를 창살 안에 가둔 자들이 품은 증오와 더불어 그 자신이 지녔던 증오와 원한이 자신을 감옥에 집어넣었음을 인정했습니다. 하지만 그는 제때에 그 증오를 사랑으로 대치했습니다. 그 결과, 그의 유죄판결이 기각되고 감옥에서 풀려나기 전에 그는 이미 내적 자유를 체험하며 살았습니다.
오늘의 제1독서에서는, 사도들 또한 부당하게 감옥에 갇혔지만 하느님 친히 기적적으로 감옥 문을 열어 주십니다. 그들은 감옥에서 나오게 되자 곧바로 무슨 일을 했지요? 다시 성전으로 올라가서, 처음에 자신들이 잡혀가게 된 바로 그 일, 곧 예수님의 부활을 선포하는 일을 계속해서 했습니다!
감옥에서 풀려난 허리케인 카터는 정의와 화해를 위해 자신의 삶을 투신했고, 이와 마찬가지로 사도들은 주님을 섬기고 세상에 복음을 전하는 일에 투신했습니다. 진정한 자유란 바로 이런 것이겠지요. 하고 싶은 것을 내키는 대로 아무 때나 하는 것이 ‘자유’가 아닙니다. 교회는 이렇게 가르칩니다. “선을 행하면 행할수록 더욱 자유로워진다. 선과 정의를 위해 봉사할 때에만 참 자유를 얻는다. 불순명과 악을 선택하는 것은 자유의 남용이며 ‘죄의 종’이 되게 한다.”(가톨릭 교회 교리서, 1733항)
당신을 가두고 있는 것처럼 느껴지는 감옥 문들이 있습니까? 우리 대부분에게 그 문들은 물리적인 것은 아니지만 현실입니다. 자유의 가장 큰 걸림돌은 흔히 우리 내면에 존재합니다. 예를 들어 공포, 분노, 자존심 등이 그러하지요. 그러나 희망을 버리지 마십시오! 믿음을 중단하지 마십시오! 하느님께서는 사도들에게 하신 것처럼 손수 그 감옥 문들을 열어젖히고 당신을 해방시켜 주실 테니까요!
하느님께서는 당신이 완성해야 할 계획과 목표를 가지고 계십니다. 당신이 천사의 목소리를 듣지 못하더라도, 메시지는 똑같습니다. “가거라 …” 그리고 예수님께서 너에게 하신 일을 “모두 백성에게 전하여라.”(사도 5,20)
“예수님,
제 모든 짐을 주님 발치에 내려놓습니다.
주님께서 저를 자유롭게 하실 수 있고
또 그렇게 하시리라는 것을 저는 믿습니다.
주 예수님, 오시어 저를 묶고 있는
모든 속박에서 풀어 주십시오!”
